Will Canelo fight Liam Smith or Lemieux in September?

canelo5666

By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Eric Gomez said this week that he’ll be talking with Gennady Golovkin’s management this Monday to see if a fight between GGG and Golden Boy fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is something they would see as beneficial for September.

It’s thought by many fans that Golden Boy won’t let the popular Canelo take the fight against Golovkin this year because of the potential of him getting roasted and plucked clean by the Kazakhstan fighter. If Golden Boy doesn’t let Canelo fight Golovkin (or if Canelo doesn’t want the fight himself), then the likely two candidates for Canelo to fight is WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) or former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (35-3, 32 KOs).

By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) are looking to reserve several venues for their No.1 money fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for his next fight on September 17. Earlier on Thursday, Golden Boy booked the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. They’re also looking to reserve Madison Square Garden in New York, and the giant AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

GBP Vice President Eric Gomez says Miguel Cotto is an option for Canelo, as is IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Gomez will be meeting with Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler on Monday to discuss a possible fight. If the fight works for Canelo and Golden Boy, then they’ll do it.

Keith Thurman wants Canelo fight

thurman93

By Allan Fox: WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) says he would like to fight former two division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs), because he sees him as a guy that is a big cash cow in the sport. Thurman didn’t mention Gennady Golovkin as someone he would like to fight when he moves up in weight.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya recently said that Golovkin wasn’t as talented as Thurman because he couldn’t fight going backwards. If Thurman is more talented than Golovkin, then this would be a good opportunity for Thurman to prove it if Golovkin is still around when Thurman does eventually move up in weight.

For Thurman to get a fight against Canelo, he will likely need to become a huge name in his own right, and he’ll also need to be a little more stationary.

Canelo’s next fight on September 17 at MGM Grand, Las Vegas

canelo100

By Dan Ambrose: Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) will be fighting in three months from now on September 17 against an opponent still to be determined at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo’s promoters have put in a request to the Nevada State Athletic Commission to promote Canelo’s next fight on September 17 at the MGM Grand, according to Dan Rafael.

The opponent for the 25-year-old Canelo will be someone selected from the following list of fighters: Liam Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, Shawn Porter, Gennady Golovkin, and David Lemieux. This is a list from Golden Boy Promotions Senior Vice President Eric Gomez. What’s interesting about the list is how few junior middleweights it contains.

Canelo and Chavez Jr: How weight dictates their careers

Image: Canelo and Chavez Jr: How weight dictates their careers

By Yannis Mihanos: In this article I will speak specifically about two famous Mexican fighters Saul Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Starting from the younger one, Canelo a natural middleweight, he prefers to fight in lighter divisions, going down the scales and going up in the day of the fight. It seems that he has developed a science over it in dehydrating to fight at lower weights. Virgil Hunter, the trainer for Amir Khan, joked about it in an interview with HBO’s Max Kellerman and said that he would so much wish to be a fly on the wall and watch how Canelo rehydrates all this weight back.

Canelo dropped from WBC’s ratings

Image: Canelo dropped from WBC’s ratings

By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) has been dropped completely by the World Boxing Council’s ratings. The WBC came out with their new ratings for June, and the 25-year-old Canelo is nowhere to be seen among the top 15 contenders ranked by the sanctioning body.

It’s not surprising though, because Canelo recently vacated his WBC 160lb title when given a deadline by the WBC to complete the negotiations for a fight against his #1 WBC mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions issued a statement saying they weren’t going to negotiate under a deadline by the WBC. However, after Canelo dropped his WBC title, the fight with Golovkin still wasn’t negotiated.

Cotto’s best options for next fight

Image: Cotto’s best options for next fight

By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) still hasn’t scheduled a fight this year. The 35-year-old Cotto’s last fight was against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last November. Cotto lost that fight by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision on HBO pay-per-view.

The fight was a lot closer than the scores handed down by the judges. Cotto’s best options for his next fight are a rematch with Canelo or a fight against 42-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez. However, it’s still unclear whether Cotto will fight at all in 2016. It would be in Cotto’s best interest to fight this year if he wants to stay sharp, but it’s unclear whether he will or not.

Golden Boy Promotions comments on Canelo lawsuit

canelo765555

By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions has reportedly won their lawsuit for their fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez with past promoter All-Star Boxing. The jury found that there wasn’t a contract that existed between All-Star Boxing and Canelo, states the Golden Boy.

However, the jury did award All-Star Boxing $8.5 million. Golden Boy plans on appealing this to get the award reduced or erased entirely. The $8.5 million is owed by Canelo, not Golden Boy, according to the LA Times. You have to wonder if Golden Boy will give Canelo a bonus to cover the $8.5M.

The positive news from this is that Golden Boy and Canelo are now able to restart negotiations with IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) to put together a mega-fight between the two middleweight stars.

Canelo seems scared of Golovkin, says Benavidez

Image: Canelo seems scared of Golovkin, says Benavidez

By Dan Ambrose: 140lb contender Jose Benavidez thinks Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) is scared to fight IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs). Benavidez sees Canelo’s vacating of his WBC middleweight title as a sign that he’s afraid of fighting Triple G.

Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions said that he gave up the belt because he wasn’t going to negotiate under a deadline and pressure the World Boxing Council was putting on them to negotiate with GGG. However, Benavidez doesn’t buy into that, because he feels that if Canelo honestly wanted the fight with Golovkin, he would have taken it a long time ago before his fight against welterweight Amir Khan last May.

Loeffler: Golovkin to fight in August or September

golovkin633

By Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) plans on fighting in August or September with or without Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs), according to Triple G’s promoter Tom Loeffler. Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy promotions are tied up with a civil trial in Florida at this time with promoter Tuto Zabala involving a promotional issue with Canelo.

Zabala was previously Canelo’s promoter until he moved on and signed with Golden Boy. Golovkin wants to fight in August or September, and he’s not going to wait for Canelo if he chooses to drag his feet. Golovkin wants to stay busy.
