Roy Jones Jr. to face fan tonight

jones5By Chris Williams: 47-year-old Roy Jones Jr. will be facing a fan tonight at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, Arizona. This is part of a contest type fight in which a fans will have a chance to pick up $100,000 if he can beat Jones Jr. The fan that Jones Jr. is fighting is 33-year-old Vyron Philips.

Philips doesn’t stand much of a chance of beating Jones Jr. unless he can land something hard early on. Jones Jr. was knocked out in his last December by the big punching Enzo Maccarinelli. However, getting knocked out by a former cruiserweight world champion like Maccarinelli is nothing for Jones to be ashamed of, especially at his age. But for a fan a fans to try and beat Jones Jr., it’s going to be a much different story.

Jones isn’t a pushover that a regular person can beat him. He’s a well-trained fighter with vast knowledge of the sport. A fan isn’t going to stand much of a chance against Jones.

Steve Collins Interview – ”With Roy Jones It’s Unfinished Business”

collins2By Cathal Jennings – Recently I caught up with Ireland’s most successful professional Boxer Steve Collins. See what the former 2x World Champion had to say about facing the winner of Chris Eubank/Nigel Benn, A potential fight with Roy Jones Jr, His views on Middleweight king Gennady Golovkin and the current state of Irish Boxing.

CJ: Without any World Champions, What do you think of Irish Boxing at the moment and where it is heading?

SC: I think Irish Boxing has never had so many great fighters and has never been in such a good place in the history of Irish Boxing. There are so many good fighters out there with the likes of the Hyland’s, Ormond’s, Keeler’s and O Sullivan’s and that’s just in my brother’s gym (Celtic Warriors). The problem now is that we have great fighters but we don’t have the big name promoter’s in Ireland to promote them. Before we had Barney Eastwood who brought a lot of guy’s on, then a lot of guys went abroad and fought with (Barry) Hearn and (Frank) Warren. Right now we have a lot of Irish fighter’s that are based in Ireland but due to unforeseen circumstances recently professional Boxing in Ireland has been setback. In regards the fighter’s we have plenty of talent we just lack the promoter’s.

Roy Jones Jr. to fight a fan on PPV on March 20

jones5By Allan Fox: In a worrisome sign that things might not be going too well for 47-year-old former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (62-9, 45 KOs), he’ll be fighting a fan in a contest televised on Pay-per-view on March 20.

Fans can apply for the fight with Jones by sending in a 90-second video giving their reasons why they should get the fight. The fans will then pick out the best guy they want to face the aging former world champion Jones.

If the fan is able to KO Jones, then they can pick up $100K. With the way that Jones has looked recently, it wouldn’t be surprising if he winds up getting knocked out by a fan, especially if the fan is a professional or amateur boxer of decent quality with good pop in their punches.

Roy Jones Jr. still hasn’t retired yet

jones4By Tim Fletcher: Earlier this week, 47-year-old Roy Jones Jr. (62-9, 45 KOs) was expected to announce his retirement from the sport. However, he still hasn’t pulled the trigger by making an announcement. According to Russian news reports, Jones Jr. was going to hang up his gloves this week following his fourth round knockout loss to Enzo Maccarinelli last December in Moscow.

It was obviously an embarrassing moment for Jones Jr. because he had just been granted Russian citizenship without having to give up his American citizenship. The Russian fans flocked to see Jones Jr. fight Maccarinelli, but were greeted by an old and decrepit looking Jones, who did little more than fight with his back against the ropes for four rounds in the process of being stopped.

Bernard Hopkins vs. Roy Jones Jr. 3: Why Not?

jones-hopkins365By Nate Estrada: When it comes to trilogies in boxing, fans know what to expect for the third and final showdown. Winning a fight each is only asking for one more fight. From Muhammad Ali – Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard – Roberto Duran, Arturo Gatti – Mickey Ward, Erik Morales – Marco Antonio Barrera to Manny Pacquiao – Erik Morales, it’s clear they fought a third time to prove to everyone who is the better fighter and to also cement their legacy in boxing history.

Whether rivals or not, the third fight is the ultimate test between the oppositions regardless if it’s a fight many want to see or not. So why not one more showdown between Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins (55-7-2, 32KOs) and Roy Jones Jr.(62-9, 45KOs)?

When they first met in the ring on May 22nd, 1993 for the vacant IBF Middleweight Championship, both were upcoming fighters and were also ranked next to each other, therefore the fight was bound to happen.

Roy Jones Jr. to continue his boxing career

jones4By Gerardo Granados: Once upon a time, a slick boxer came out of the amateurs. He was so dominant at the amateur level that before and after he became a professional boxer I have never seen anyone like him. Not even Floyd Mayweather Jr, Oscar De La Hoya, Meldrick Taylor or Sugar Ray Leonard looked that impressive at the amateur level. The boxer I refer to suffered one of the most outrageous robberies in boxing history, be it in the amateur or professional rankings.

Note: Roy Jones Jr. says he will not be retiring after his 4th round knockout loss to Enzo Maccarinelli last Saturday night at the VTB Arena, in Moscow, Russia.

This is what Jones Jr. had to say via Fightnews.com: “This first fight as a Russian will not be the last. This is just the beginning. I said I wanted to finish my career, but now I feel a responsibility to re-enter the ring. I want to continue my work in boxing.”

Maccarinelli: I knew I would take Jones out

jones4By Scott Gilfoid: Enzo Maccarinelli (41-7, 33 KOs) sounded like he was drunk off the success he had last night in stopping 46-year-old Russian citizen Roy Jones Jr. (62-9, 45 KOs) in the 4th round last Saturday night in front of a packed house of Jones fans at the VTB Arena in Moscow, Russia.

The win by Maccarinelli appears to have planted some ideas into his head, because he’s already jabbering about wanting to fight for a world title. I think someone needs to sit Maccarinelli down and remind him that he’s not ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies in the cruiserweight division, and he only just beat Jones, not a talent like #1 WBO Olesandr Usyk.

Maccarinelli KOs Jones Jr; Chudinov & Ustinov both win – results

By Jim Dower: Roy Jones Jr. (62-9, 45 KOs) may have seen his great career end tonight with him getting knocked out cold in the 4th round by his bigger opponent Enzo Maccarinelli (41-7, 33 KOs) at the VTB Arena in Moscow, Russia. Maccarinelli landed a scorching right hand to the head of Jones in the 4th that knocked him unconscious in putting him down on his face. The referee stopped the contest immediately upon seeing how hurt Jones was.

Roy Jones Jr. vs. Enzo Maccarinelli tonight in Moscow

jonesBy Scott Gilfoid: In a battle of aging cruiserweights, 46-year-old Roy Jones Jr. (62-8, 45 KOs) will test his eroding boxing skills and power tonight against the 35-year-old Brit Enzo Maccarinelli (40-7, 32 KOs) in a fight in Jones Jr’s new adopted country at the VTB Arena in Moscow, Russia. Jones Jr. still has an unfinished goal of wanting to capture a cruiserweight world title before he eventually retires from the sport.

With a ranking of #11 with the WBO, Jones Jr. can keep moving forward towards that goal if he can beat the 6’3” Maccarinelli tonight. If not, then Jones might need to consider hanging up the gloves and focusing on his career in broadcasting with HBO.

A lot of people would love to be in Jones’ shoes in working with HBO Boxing as a broadcaster, because it’s a nice-paying gig. However, Jones has his reasons for sticking it out in boxing despite the fact that he’s been mostly just spinning his wheels in the last 11 years of his career since 2004.

Weights: Jones Jr 198, Maccarinelli 193

jonesBy Scott Gilfoid: A slightly flabby looking Roy Jones Jr. (62-8, 45 KOs) weighed in successfully on Friday in coming in at 198lbs for his scheduled 12 round bout against former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli (40-7, 32 KOs) for their fight on Saturday night in Jones Jr’s adopted country of Russia at the VTB Arena in Moscow, Russia. Maccarinelli weighed in at a skinny 193lbs.

It’s unclear what the end game is for the Jones-Maccarinelli fight. I can’t see Maccarinelli getting any more world title chances because he’s failed enough to last two careers.

As for Jones, he’s a fringe level guy with a #11 WBO ranking. Unless WBO cruiserweight champion Krzystof Glowaki wants to throw Jones Jr. a bone by giving him a shot with one of his voluntary defenses, I can’t see Jones ever working his way to a No.1 mandatory position with the WBO. But my guess is we’ll see Jones get a shot at Glowaki in the near future. I can’t say I’m looking forward to that. I think Glowaki will destroy Jones worse than Denis Lebedev did.
