jones5By Chris Williams: 47-year-old Roy Jones Jr. will be facing a fan tonight at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, Arizona. This is part of a contest type fight in which a fans will have a chance to pick up $100,000 if he can beat Jones Jr. The fan that Jones Jr. is fighting is 33-year-old Vyron Philips.

Philips doesn’t stand much of a chance of beating Jones Jr. unless he can land something hard early on. Jones Jr. was knocked out in his last December by the big punching Enzo Maccarinelli. However, getting knocked out by a former cruiserweight world champion like Maccarinelli is nothing for Jones to be ashamed of, especially at his age. But for a fan a fans to try and beat Jones Jr., it’s going to be a much different story.

Jones isn’t a pushover that a regular person can beat him. He’s a well-trained fighter with vast knowledge of the sport. A fan isn’t going to stand much of a chance against Jones.

You can expect Jones to toy with Philips by letting him hang around rather than taking him out immediately. There will be a lot of people coming to see the fight, and Jones might not want to ruin it for them by taking Philips out with a body shot or something right away.

“I don’t really give into the critics because critics are always going to criticize and what have they done?” Jones told cbssports.com. “A person who has never done nothing can’t really care nothing about doing something. So as far as the critics, I don’t care what they think. I don’t have time to give to critics. If I spent my career responding to critics, I’d never be where I’m at right now.”

Philips was the lucky person who got selected to fight Jones. There were over 1,500 entries from other boxing fans for the chance to fight Jones Jr., and Philips got selected. However, with experience in the sport, Philips stands next to no chance of winning the fight.

Many boxing fans would like to see Jones hang up his gloves, but he’s been reluctant to do so. With the kind of money that Jones can make for simple fights, it’s hard to walk away. I can’t blame Jones for still hanging on. I would do it too. There’s nothing wrong with Jones Jr. making a living from the sport he loves. He should do it as long as he wants to.
