Roy Jones Jr. to fight a fan on PPV on March 20

jones5By Allan Fox: In a worrisome sign that things might not be going too well for 47-year-old former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (62-9, 45 KOs), he’ll be fighting a fan in a contest televised on Pay-per-view on March 20.

Fans can apply for the fight with Jones by sending in a 90-second video giving their reasons why they should get the fight. The fans will then pick out the best guy they want to face the aging former world champion Jones.

If the fan is able to KO Jones, then they can pick up $100K. With the way that Jones has looked recently, it wouldn’t be surprising if he winds up getting knocked out by a fan, especially if the fan is a professional or amateur boxer of decent quality with good pop in their punches.

The fight is part of a PPV card in Phoenix, Arixzona. The event is called “UR Fight.”

Jones was knocked out in the 4th round in his last fight in December against Enzo Maccarinelli in Moscow, Russia. It was a bad knockout for Jones, who appeared to be unconscious after getting nailed by some thunderous shots from the hard-hitting Maccarinelli. It was thought that Jones would retire from the sport recently, but he’s still holding out for a little while longer.

Regardless of how things go with his fight a fan PPV event, it’s not likely that Jones will continue with his career for much longer. It would be sad if he turns what’s left of his career into a circus carnival type of situation where members of the audience are coming into the ring to try and KO an aging great. It’s like something out of the movie “Paradise Alley.”
It’s a good thing that Jones still has his HBO gig as an analyst for the network, because it would be sad if he continues to fight into his 50s.

At some point a boxing commission has to step in and save Jones from himself if he’s not going to retire. If Jones continues to fight as a pro, he’s likely to continue to get knocked out by other fighters. It was especially sad to see Jones stopped by Maccarinelli recently because he’s considered to be a shot and chinny fighter in the minds of a lot of fans. If Jones wants to just focus on fighting fans for loose change, then that’s one thing. But if he wants to continue his pro career, I think it’s a bad idea and it will lead to him getting knocked out again and again in the near future.

As far as the fan goes, if the fan doesn’t have a boxing background, they’re going to be in trouble against Jones. You can’t just walk into the fight and fight a former multiple world champion and expect to do well. I don’t care how old the ex-champion is. If you’re fighting a guy that has fought most of their life in the ring, you’re not going to stand a chance.
