Burns fights Di Rocco for WBA 140lb title on 5/28

Ricky BurnsBy Scott Gilfoid: Despite having lost the last time he fought at 140 in 2015, former two division world champion Ricky Burns (39-5-1, 13 KOs) will be given the chance to fight for the vacant WBA World light welterweight title on May 28 against #2 WBA Michele Di Rocco (40-1-1, 18 KOs) in Burns’ home city of Glasow, Scotland.

The fight will be taking place at the SSE Hydro. This is one of those fights that makes you shake your head and realize how far the sport of boxing needs to go before it’s up there with the other sports. What is disappointing about the Burns-Di Rocco fight, besides Di Rocco having a resume barren of well-known opposition, is the fact that the soon to be 33-year-old Burns isn’t even ranked in the top 15 at 140.

Ricky Burns vs. Michele Di Rocco possible for May

burns200By Scott Gilfoid: 32-year-old former two division world champion Ricky Burn (39-5-1, 13 KOs) could be facing #2 WBA 140lb contender Michele Di Rocco (40-1-1, 18 KOs) in May sometime in Glascow, Scotland for the vacant WBA “regular” light welterweight title. The fight still isn’t official at this time, as Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn is still working on it.

It makes sense for the 33-year-old Italian Di Rocco to be fighting for the title, but it makes zero sense for Burns. He’s not ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies at light welterweight, and he of course isn’t ranked by the World Boxing Association.

It’s hardly fair to the contenders that are ranked by the WBA at 140 like #1 WBA Jose Benavidez, #3 WBA Mauricio Herrera and #4 WBA Ruslan Provodnikov. Burns is ranked #2 by the WBO at 135 and #15 by the WBC.

Ricky Burns wants Flanagan-Mathews winner

burns200By Scott Gilfoid: Riding a little 2-fight winning streak, 32-year-old former two division world champion Ricky “Rickster” Burns (39-5-1, 13 KOs) is hoping to get a fight against the winner of next month’s February 13 clash between unbeaten WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan (29-0, 12 KOs) and Derry Mathews (38-9-2, 20 KOs) in their fight at the O2 Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Unfortunately for Burns, he might have to fight a WBO eliminator to get the fight against the Flanagan-Mathews winner. In that case, Burns would have to beat either #1 WBO Jose Zepeda or #2 WBO Petr Petrov.

Burns is ranked #3 by the WBO, and I have no clue why the World Boxing Organization would let Burns jump ahead of one of those two higher ranked contenders to fight in an eliminator bout.

Ricky Burns poised to get Terry Flanagan fight

Ricky BurnsBy Scott Gilfoid: If #8 WBO Ricky Burns (39-5-1, 13 KOs) wins his next fight on April 9th, he’ll be getting a world title shot against unbeaten WBO World lightweight champion Terry Flanagan (29-0, 12 KOs) in 2016, according to his manager Alex Morrison. Burns, 32, will be fighting a still to be determined opponent on the undercard of British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua’s next fight in April 2016.

Burns is supposed to be fighting for some kind of trinket in that fight, and from there he’ll be facing the 26-year-old Flanagan in his next fight, according to Sky Sports.

Can British promoters unite for lightweights?

flanagan1By Gav Duthie: For at least the last 5 years the lightweight division has been Britain’s strongest. Sure there have been better fighters like Kell Brook (Welterweight), Carl Froch (Super Middleweight), Carl Frampton (Bantamweight) etc but for sheer depth of quality lightweight is by far and away the best. They have had at least double figures of contender to world level fighters in the likes of Kevin Mitchell, Ricky Burns, Terry Flanagan, Gavin Rees, Anthony Crolla, John Murray, Derry Matthews, Nicky Cook, Stephen Ormond and Luke Campbell and now that domestic potential is coming to fruition.

The UK now has two of the three lightweight world title holders (IBF currently vacant) and many others waiting on the wings. It is a really exciting time for UK boxing with 10 world champions overall and there are lots of potential domestic fights for world titles at 135lbs but there is a problem. The fighters are split between Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions and Frank Warren’s Queensbury Promotions.

Smith obliterates Fielding; Burns stops King – live results

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC Callum Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) dropped Rocky Fielding (21-1, 12 KOs) three times in stopping him in the 1st round to capture the vacant British super middleweight title on Saturday night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. I thought Fielding beat the count, and I’m not sure why the referee Phil Edwards stopped the fight at 2:45 of the round. I thought Fielding should have been given the benefit of the doubt because he clearly was on his feet when Edwards waived it off.

Smith-Fielding & Burns-King make weight

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC Callum Smith (17-0, 12 KOs) and #5 IBF Rocky Fielding (21-0, 12 KOs) both made weight on Friday for their fight this Saturday night for the vacant British super middleweight title at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Smith weighed in at 11st 13lbs 5oz and looked like he was ready to start fighting on the spot. He didn’t look drained as I thought he would. The fighter who did look painfully thin was Fielding, who weighed in at 11st 13lbs 3oz.

Smith-Fielding & Burns-King this Saturday

smith1111By Scott Gilfoid: This Saturday night, #1 WBC, #13 IBF, #13 WBO super middleweight contender Callum Smith (17-0, 12 KOs) faces unbeaten #10 WBC, #10 WBA, #12 WBO Rocky Fielding (21-0, 12 KOs) in a 12 round fight for the vacant British 168lb title at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Smith, 25, looked terrible in his last fight against Christopher Rebrasse last June in winning a 12 round decision. Smith won, but he was nailed constantly and was fortunate to get the win. That fight really lowered Smith’s stock in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans.
