Ricky Burns: There are some big fights out there for me

burns200By Scott Gilfoid: Ricky Burns’ 5th round stoppage win over little known fighter Prince Ofotsu (15-5, 11 KOs) last Saturday night in Hull seems to have planted some ideas in Burns’ head. He now says he’s ready for a big fight. Burns is leaving it up to his promoter Eddie Hearn to find him that big fight for him to show to the boxing world that he’s not an over-the-hill despite having lost 3 out of his last 5 fights in the past two years.

The only wins that Burns has picked up in the last two years were against little known Ofotsu and Alexandre Lepelly. That’s not exactly world class opposition, is it?

Campbell-Coyle, Rose-Jones 2, Whyte-Costa-Junior & Burns-Ofotsu tonight

campbell5By Scott Gilfoid: In a card loaded with mismatches from top to bottom, #15 WBC lightweight contender Luke Campbell (11-0, 9 KOs) will be facing #7 IBF, #14 WBC Tommy Coyle (21-2, 10 KOs) in the feature bout tonight at the Craven Park Stadium in Hull, UK. Just why the 27-year-old Campbell is still facing domestic level opposition like the 25-year-old Coyle at this point in his career is unclear.

I mean, Campbell is a gold medal winner from the 2012 London, Olympics. Yeah, Campbell was involved in some controversial fights where appeared to lose in the eyes of some fans, but he really should have already stepped it up well before this point.

Ricky Burns looking for big fights at 135 after he faces Prince Afotsu

Ricky BurnsBy Scott Gilfoid: With a dreadful 1-4-1 record in his last six fights, former two division world champion Ricky Burns (37-5-1, 11 KOs) says he’s looking to take on all the top lightweights after he gets past little known Price Afotsu (15-4, 11 KOs) this Saturday night in their 10 round bout on the undercard of the Luke Campbell vs. Tommy Coyle fight at the Craven Park Stadium, Hull, Yorkshire, UK.

Burns’ career has just really imploded since he beat Jose Gonzalez in a punishing fight in 2013. Burns took a lot of hard head shots against Gonzalez, and he’s not looked the same after since. Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn is hoping to stop the bleeding of Burns’ career by matching him against a soft touch this Saturday against Afotsu, but that doesn’t chance the fact that Burns is likely to continue to struggle once Hearn attempts to put him back in with decent quality fighters.

Boxing preview for Rumble on the Humber – August 1st

Omar Figueroa vs Ricky BurnsBy Gav Duthie: The city of Hull plays host to their biggest ever boxing spectacle as two local lightweights Luke Campbell and Tommy Coyle lock horns. The event also boasts a good undercard full of boxers with varying agendas – the revenge of Brian Rose on Carson Jones, the latest comeback of two time world champ Ricky Burns and the profile building of heavyweight prospect Dillian Whyte. Here is my take on the fights with predictions.

Luke Campbell 11-0 v Tommy Coyle 21-2

Many fight fans are asking when Olympic gold medalist Anthony Joshua is going to step up in class. Fellow gold medalist Luke Campbell is definitely being handed a tougher assignment than any Joshua has received in fellow Hull boxer and stablemate Tommy Coyle.
