Williams Destroys Kolle – Latest Boxing News

williams45345.jpgBy Aaron Klein: World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Paul Williams (35-1, 26 KOs), as most everyone expected he would, he destroyed middleweight Andy Kolle (17-2, 12 KOs) in the 1st round tonight at the Soboba Casino, in San Jacinto, California. In a rare match-up between two southpaws, Williams, 27, went right after Kolle in the first round, tagging him with a brief flurry of shots and hurting him, and then finishing him off with a couple of rights to the body and head, and then a left hook to the head as Kolle was on his downward descent towards the canvas. Kolle, 27, gamely tried to make it to his feet in a brave effort to continue fighting, but the referee Jerry Cantu was having none of it and quickly stopped the fight at 1:37 of the 1st round, only 97 seconds into the round.

Williams hurt Kolle in the opening seconds of the bout with a straight left hand. The action then slowed somewhat as Williams, looking a lot bigger and slightly smooth as if he didn’t all muscle while building up to the middleweight division, missed shots and took a few light punches from Kolle.

Froch Ready For Pascal; Haye To Fight Barrett; Williams and Arreola Ready For Bout – Latest Boxing News

haye454467.jpgAfter what seemed like ions for former cruiserweight champion David Haye to make his decision for his next opponent for his November 15th bout, only his second as a heavyweight, he finally made up his mind with today’s announcement that he will be fighting top contender Monte Barrett at the O2 Arena in London. Barrett, 37, has a good resume having fought top fighters such as Tim Witherspoon, Lance Whitaker, Wladimir Klitschko, Hasim Rahman, Nikolay Valuev, Joe Mesi and Dominick Guinn. Most of the time, Barrett has done well against the top tier fighters with the exception of Klitschko, who was simply too big and too powerful for him, stopping Barrett in seven rounds in July 2000.

Ranked #9th in the WBO, Barrett fits Haye’s criteria of a top fighter, which was something that Haye had been saying he wanted to fight. Haye, 27, previously had come to signing a fight with 6’5″ JD Chapman, but that fight fell through when Chapman decided he didn’t want the bout. This left Haye with a lot of tough choices, because many of the top 15 fighters would be dangerous opponents for a fighter like Haye with only one other heavyweight bout on his resume.

Is Paul Williams Making a Mistake By Fighting As a Middleweight?

williams-quintana574563.jpgBy Manuel Perez: Unable to capture a rematch with Antonio Margarito, World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Paul Williams (34-1, 25 KOs) is instead putting his foot in the water of the middleweight division against Andy Kolle (17-1, 12 KOs) in a 10-round bout on September 25th at the Soboba Casino, in San Jacinto, California. After Williams’ promoter reportedly made a $ five million dollar offer that was promptly ignored by Margarito, Williams, with the future in mind, chose to schedule a stay busy fight against the middleweight Kolle.

This isn’t a particularly dangerous fight for the 6’2″ Williams because Kolle isn’t much of a puncher despite his 12 knockouts on his record. He has faced few quality opponents during his short four year career other than Matt Vanda, whom he narrowly defeated by an eight round decision in November and Andre Ward, who stopped him in the 8th round in April 2006. Like I said, this is a stay busy fight for Williams, one in which he will get a feel for the middleweight division and see how well he’s suited for the division, while at the same time still defend his WBO welterweight title every now and then. Make no mistake, it’s a smart move for Williams to try and move to move between the divisions if he can get away with it, because the welterweights are limited at this time.

De La Hoya Looking Towards Paul Williams As Final Opponent — Boxing News

de-la-hoya44454.jpgBy Eric Thomas: With the talks with Manny Pacquiao still going nowhere and stuck in a standoff, Oscar De La Hoya is reportedly looking at taking on WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams (34-1, 25 KOs) for De La Hoya’s final fight of his career on December 6th. However, it’s hard to take this boxing news serious because Williams, 27, is probably the best welterweight in the division, and who already holds a win over Antonio Margarito, the fighter that De La Hoya has shown no interest at all in fighting and who many boxing fans feel that De La Hoya is afraid of.

Williams, a tall, 6’2″ fighter with an high work rate, would be a very dangerous opponent for a fighter as old and as inactive as De La Hoya has been in the past five years. Frankly, I can’t see this fight turning out any different for De La Hoya than a fight with Margarito would, because De La Hoya won’t be able to match-up with the huge size of Williams, and he surely won’t be able to hold him off with his jabs and left hook.

De La Hoya Now Looking At Possible Opponents Mosley, Hatton, Williams, Mora, and Jones

delahoya4456875.jpgBy Jason Kim: The Oscar De La Hoya sweepstakes continue as the CEO of Golden Boy, Richard Schaefer, said yesterday that De La Hoya is now considering a fight with the following opponents, Ricky Hatton, Sergio Mora, Paul Williams, Roy Jones Jr. and Shane Mosley. De La Hoya, 35, was previously working on a fight with Manny Pacquiao, but that fight fell through when Pacquiao failed to accept Golden Boy’s offer of a 30% share of the PPV revenues for the fight. Pacquiao, however, was looking at getting at least 40%.

Rather than give in to Oscar’s wishes and accepting an offer that he felt was unfair, Pacquiao walked away, leaving Oscar without an opponent once again. Not to be one to just sit and mope about the turn of events, De La Hoya has immediately started looking at other options. A name conspicuously missing from the list of fighters named was Antonio Margarito, a tough all offense fighter who recently dethroned Miguel Cotto last month.

De La Hoya, however, doesn’t want to fight him because, A. He’s a Mexican and Oscar doesn’t want to fight a Mexican fighter in his final fight of his career, although Mora is Mexican. B. Margarito has unfinished business with Paul Williams, who previously defeated him by a close 12-round decision in 2007.

Miguel Cotto vs. Paul Williams: Would This Be Another Wipeout Loss For Miguel?

margo685.jpgBy Jason Kim: After watching former WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto get methodically taken apart by the Mexican Tornado Antonio Margarito recently, I wondered whether Cotto would stand a chance against an even bigger fighter like the 6’2″ WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams. If the question was asked before Cotto’s recent fight with Margarito, I’m fairly certain that most people would be in agreement that Cotto would come out the winner in the fight due his excellent counter punching ability and pinpoint punching.

However, Margarito showed Cotto for all his vulnerabilities, making it clear that he doesn’t like to be pressured for a long period of time and that he often fades badly in the in the 10th to the 12th rounds of his fights. Cotto has the much better power than Williams, and that’s something that won’t likely change even after Cotto’s loss. He punches well to the body and head, and isn’t easy to hit with single shots. Indeed, Cotto’s defense has improved immensely in the past couple of years to the point where he looks almost as good as Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his ability to duck and get out of the way of punches.

Options Available For Miguel Cotto – Williams, Judah, Margarito, Clottey

cotto462745.jpgBy Thomas Hanson: Since his brutal 11th round TKO loss to challenger Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KOs), there’s been a lot of speculation about what former WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (32-1, 26 KOs) will do next to rebound from the loss. For most boxing fans, they would like nothing better than to see Cotto get right back in the ring and fight Margarito in a rematch at the end of the year, perhaps in November or December. This would be the best scenario, because a rematch between the two of them would be a huge fight, a tremendous moneymaker for both fighters.

Cotto, though, took a lot of punishment in the later part of the fight in particular to the head, and it’s uncertain that he would want to risk getting back in the ring with a heavy pressure fighter like Margarito so soon. It would definitely be a ballsy move on Cotto’s part if he were to do that, similar to the way that welterweight Paul Williams immediately called for a rematch with Carlos Quintana after losing his title to him months earlier. However, in Williams’ case, he didn’t take a savage beating like Cotto, and he fought more or less competitively throughout the fight, especially in the later rounds when he appeared to be coming on and starting to regain control of the fight.

Kelly Pavlik vs. Paul Williams in September?

pavlik6724.jpgBy Eric Thomas: Promoter of Kelly Pavlik, Bob Arum, has reportedly been unable to make arrangements for a bout between WBC light middleweight champion Sergio Mora and WBO/WBC middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, apparently because the offer made for Mora ($1.2 million) wasn’t enough for them. Mora needed a minimum of $1.5, for his own payment and to use as step aside money due to his already signed contract for a rematch with Vernon Forrest, whom he recently defeated by a 12-round unanimous decision last month. Arum, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN, wouldn’t go above the $1.2 million, and pulled out of the negotiations.

With that deal off the table, Arum is looking at trying to line up a bout between newly crowned WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams, a 6’1′ tall, slender, high volume puncher, with a physique not unlike that of Pavlik.
