Quintana vs. Williams: Does Carlos Have A Chance?

Instead of facing International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Kermit Cintron next month, Paul Williams (33-0, 24 KOs), The WBO welterweight champ, will have to settle for Carlos Quintana (24-1, 19 KOs), whom he will be battling next month on February 9th at the Pechanga Resort & Casino, in Temecula, California. if this bout had occurred in, say, late 2006, before Quintana was destroyed by Miguel Cotto in five rounds, it would be an intriguing bout. However, Quintana, now 31, has done next to nothing since upsetting welterweight prospect Joel Julio in June 2006, a fight which put Quintana’s name on the boxing map.

Is Mayweather Afraid Of Paul Williams?

Now that World Boxing Council welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KOs) has gotten by the business of beating to consecutive easy gimme fights, I think it’s high time that he start facing real challenges in his career rather than the same easy set up fights that we’ve been used to seeing from him for most of his career. One fighter out of all the welterweights jumps out at you when one thinks of the welterweight division, and that’s undefeated World Boxing Organization champion Paul Williams (33-0, 24 KOs), who is arguably the best fighter in not only the welterweight division but in all of boxing.

Showing perhaps a sign of desperation, World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Paul Williams (33-0, 24KOs) is already looking beyond his next opponent Carlos Quintana, whom he fights on February 9th, as he said in a recent interview that he is interested in facing Shane Mosley after his bout with Quintana. Previous to this, Williams and Cintron had decided on fighting each other on February 23, following Cintron’s title defense on November 23rd. However, Cintron appeared to have change of heart after winning the fight by 10th round stoppage and discovering that he had once again re-injured his right hand.

Williams Wants Cintron To Take The Challenge

In today’s boxing news, unbeaten superstar World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Paul Williams (33-0, 24 KOs) badly wants his counterpart, International Boxing Federation welterweight Kermit Cintron to take him on as previously planned for their February 2nd bout. However, the bout hasn’t been confirmed as of yet because the contractors haven’t been signed. Apparen’t, Williams is under the impression that Cintron isn’t in a rush to fight him because of the fact that Williams already defeated Antonio Margarito by unanimous decision in July 2007, a fighter who demolished Cintron in five brutal rounds in 2005.

Cotto – What’s Next? De La Hoya, Williams, Margarito or Hatton?

cotto543554.jpgWith the dust barely settled following World Boxing Association welterweight champion Miguel Cotto’s narrow decision over Shane Mosely on Sat6urday night at Madison Square Garden, the question in most people’s minds is who should Cotto fight next? As Cotto puts it, he’d be interested in fighting “all the top guys,” like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya. However, the chance of him actually fighting either of them is slim and none, unfortunately.

De La Hoya has strict marching orders from his Puerto Rican wife, telling him that he can’t find fighters from Puerto Rico, for which Cotto is from. It’s unclear whether that De La Hoya would go against his wife’s wishes, but unless I miss my guess, this is probably a convenient excuse for him not to have to face the embarrassment of losing badly, likely by knockout by the hard-punching Cotto. So, De La Hoya’s basically out of the picture, no matter how much Cotto might want to fight him.
