By Dan Ambrose: After Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) defeated Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) tonight by a 12 round unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC middleweight title, Canelo said that he’ll fight IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) next if that’s what the boxing fans want from him.
However, it looks now like Canelo spoke too soon, because his promoter Oscar De La Hoya, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said at the post-fight press conference that there are other fights for Canelo at 154 and 160. De La Hoya said they’ll be sitting down with Canelo to decide on who his next opponent should be.
