Hearn finalizing Bellew vs. Cleverly 2 fight

cleverly55By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s putting the finishing touches on rematch between former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (28-1, 14 KOs) and former WBC Silver 175 pound title holder Tony Bellew (22-2-1, 14 KOs) for a date and a venue still to be determined.

The original date Hearn was looking at was for December 6th in Sheffield on the same card as IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s first title defense. However, with Brook out of commission after being stabbed recently while on vacation in Spain, Hearn is looking for a new date and location for the Cleverly-Bellew fight.

Nathan Cleverly vs. Tony Bellew on December 6th in Sheffield, UK

bellew6By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (28-1, 14 KOs) and former WBC Silver 175 pound strap holder Tony Bellew (22-2, 14 KOs) will square off in a WBO cruiserweight title eliminator on December 6th in Sheffield, UK, according to Fightnews.com.

The Cleverly-Bellew 2 fight will take place on IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s fight card, and it might actually live the card up if Brook is matched against a soft job instead of a talented fighter.

It’s thought by some boxing fans that Hearn won’t take any chances with Brook in order to keep him from getting beaten before he gets a big money fight against Amir Khan next year. Brook didn’t look good in beat Shawn Porter last month. He didn’t show the kind of talent needed to where you could pick him as a rock solid lock to defeat the likes of Devon Alexander and certainly not at all against a talent like Keith Thurman.

Bellew vs. Cleverly 2 promises to be an exciting fight

bellew8By Tom Berridge: Having watched both Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew for a very long time, I believe this fight is guaranteed entertainment when it finally happens.

The Bellew-Cleverly 2 fight will take place later this year and it will take place in Liverpool England, Bellew’s home town, just like there first altercation in 2011 that ended in a close decision in Cleverly’s favor and deservedly so, in my opinion.

Is moving up in weight really the answer?

burns5635By Gav Duthie: It seems to be a continuing trend that when a boxer loses a fight he isn’t supposed to, weight issues are often given as the the excuse. Ex 2 division world champion Ricky Burns is the latest to make a strategic move up to 140 lbs as he tries to rebuild his career.

Burns joins fellow Brits Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew who made the big leap from light heavyweight to cruiserweight as well as Alfredo Angulo to 154 from 147 and Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr to 160 from 154.

What makes a fighter successfully move through the divisions? The question is with these fighters in particular is whether the move is the correct one? Are they past their best? Or were they not good enough to begin with?

Hearn: Bellew vs. Cleverly II rematch to take place in October or November

bellew67By Scott Gilfoid: Promoter Eddie Hearn says he plans on matching Tony Bellew (22-2-1, 14 KO’s) and Nathan Cleverly (28-1, 14 KO’s) against each other later this year in either October or November. Hearn wants to strike while the iron is still hot after Bellew and Cleverly both scored stoppage victories last Saturday night over meager opposition. Hearn says he’d like to have the rematch take place in Manchester or London.

It’s pretty important that Hearn put together a rematch between Bellew and Cleverly as soon as possible because neither of them appear to be fighting at a high enough level in the cruiserweight division to count on them being able to avoid losses for too much longer unless Hearn wants to devote 2-3 years in matching them exclusively against fodder opposition instead of the best fighters in the division.

Bellew-Cleverly II is not a 50-50 fight

bellew8By Daven: Six months ago Tony Bellew and Nathan Cleverly were licking their wounds after being outclassed by the dominant duo of Adonis Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev. Now both men are coming off two straight stoppage victories at a much more dangerous weight division.

Eddie Hearn has somehow managed to quickly resurrect two careers which six months ago were in ruins. Nobody really gave either man any hope of winning a world title yet now there is a scenario that at least one could fight for such honours in early 2015.

Bellew stops Dos Santos; Joshua and Cleverly also win

bellew7898By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBC Silver light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (22-2-1, 14 KO’s) stopped 36-year-old Brazilian Julio Cesar Dos Santos (26-3, 23 KO’s) in the 5th round on Saturday night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. Bellew connected with a left hook that dropped Dos Santos in the 5th. Dos Santos staggered to his feet, but the referee halted it anyway.

Dos Santos was nailing Bellew with monstrous shots in the 3rd and 4th rounds. Going into the 5th, Dos Santos looked like he was on his way to victory. He looked like he was going to get to Bellew. Fortunately for Bellew, Dos Santos threw a left hook at the same time that Bellew threw his own left hook. Bellew’s left hand got there first and sent Dos Santos down.

Cleverly worried about slipping up against Valori

cleverly99By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (27-1, 13 KOs) has a lot riding on his fight tonight against little known cruiserweight Alejandro Emilio Valori (15-4, 11 KOs) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

A loss to Valori will erase what could be a career-high payday in a rematch against Tony Bellew for later this year. Cleverly obviously wants to get to that rematch because it very well could be the last huge payday that Cleverly gets if he Valori or Bellew dismantles him in the same fashion that Sergey Kovalev did last August.

Kovalev tried Cleverly like a ragdoll in giving him a beating before the plug was finally pulled in the massacre in the 4th. Cleverly hasn’t go anywhere near a talented fighter since that loss, and you’ll still be able to say the same thing after tonight’s fight, because Valori looks to be little more than a lamb being brought in for slaughter by Cleverly.

Weights: Cleverly-Valori, Bellew-Dos Santos

cleverly79800--By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (27-1, 13 KOs) and Tony Bellew (21-2-1, 13 KO’s) both weighed on Friday for their respective fights for their card dubbed “Collision Course” on Saturday at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Cleverly and Bellew will be facing each other later this year in a domestic level scrap, so their promoter Eddie Hearn set them up with what he hopes will be tune-up fights on Saturday. Whether that’ll be the case or not remains to be seen, because neither Cleverly nor Bellew looked good in their initial fights in the cruiserweight division earlier this year.

Cleverly, Bellew and Joshua talk about Saturday’s fights at Echo Arena

bellew69By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (27-1, 13 KOs’) will be back in the ring this Saturday night for made to order opponent Alejandro Emilio Valori (15-4m, 11 KO’s) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

This will be the second fight for the 27-year-old Cleverly at cruiserweight, and he realizes that he can’t make a mistake in this fight or else it’ll be bad for his career. At stake is a big money rematch against Tony Bellew (21-2-1, 13 KOs) for later on this year.
