Bellew: Cleverly will never fight again after I get through with him

bellew6By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (21-2-1, 13 KO’s) hasn’t gotten past his opponent Julio Cesar Dos Santos (26-2 23 KOs) scheduled for this Saturday night, and yet Bellew is already talking about his planned rematch against former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (27-1, 13 KO’s) for later this year.

Bellew is still bothered about being outworked by Cleverly three years ago in losing a 12 round majority decision in 2011. Bellew now feels that he’s going to beat Cleverly so badly in their rematch that Cleverly will choose to retire.

Cleverly talks Valori, Bellew and world title shot

bellew69By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO light heavyweight title holder Nathan Cleverly (27-1, 13 KO’s) will be undertaking the first part of his plan to get an eventual world title shot on Saturday against little known Alejandro Emilio Valori (15-4, 11 KOs) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

The next part involves Cleverly trying to beat Tony Bellew in a rematch later this year. The final part will be Cleverly being given a world title shot, he hopes, off the back of his wins over Valori and Bellew. Compared to what some of the other top cruiserweight contenders go through to get a world title shot, Cleverly appears to have it pretty easy because he’s basically being asked to really beat one halfway decent fighter in Bellew, because you can’t count Valori, because he’s not a top tier fighter, but rather a fighter that is more of a stay busy/tune-up type of guy to help Cleverly get acclimated.

Bellew more worried bout Santos than Cleverly on July 12th

bellew68By Scott Gilfoid: After struggling badly in his first fight at cruiserweight against 37-year-old Valery Brudov in what should have been an easy fight, Tony Bellew (21-2-1, 13 KO’s) isn’t letting himself look beyond his scheduled opponent #11 WBO Julio Cesar Dos Santos (26-2, 23 KO’s) for next Saturday, July 12th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Bellew’s promoter Eddie Hearn hooked him up with the 36-year-old fringe contender Santos to get him a scalp who is technically a ranked contender in order to get him ready for a domestic level clash next November against his former conqueror Nathan Cleverly.

Cleverly in crucial fight next Saturday against Valori

cleverly444By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (27-1, 13 KO’s) is in what he calls a “crucial” fight next Saturday night against little known 2nd tier fighter Alejandro Emilio Valori (15-4, 11 KO’s) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Cleverly, 27, will be defending his WBA Inter-Continental cruiserweight strap in the fight.

What’s interesting here is that Cleverly, #12 WBA, #12 WBO, #13 IBF, says he thinks he’s only 2 wins away from fighting for a world title against one of the champions. If you look at Cleverly’s rankings, he’s basically a fringe contender; so if he’s to be given a world title shot off of a win over Valori and a victory over Tony Bellew in their talked about rematch in November of this year, then it means Cleverly will be leap frogging over a ton of arguably more deserving contenders like Thabiso Mchunu, Ilunga Makabu and Rakhim Chakhkiev to get his world title shot.

Bellew: Cleverly will never box again after he fights me a second time

bellew34By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (21-2-1, 13 KO’s) expects to put former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (27-1, 13 KO’s) out of his misery when/if they face each other in October or November of this year. Bellew believes that with his new power at cruiserweight, he’ll send Cleverly off into a permanent retirement by giving him a furious beating that he won’t soon forget. But before Bellew and Cleverly can face each other again, they have to win their next fights against the guys that their promoter Eddie Hearn dug up for them.

Bellew will be fighting Julio Cesar Dos Santos (26-2. 23 KO’s) on July 12th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK, while Cleverly faces Alejandro Emilio Valori (15-4, 11 KO’s) on the same card. Bellew and Cleverly should be able to win these fights in order to meet up later on this year, but nothing is a given with either of them due to them both having been knocked out.

Cleverly and Bellew in action on July 12th

cleverly444By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (27-1, 13 KO’s) and former WBC Silver light heavyweight strap holder Tony Bellew (21-2-1, 13 KO’s) will be in action on July 12th in separate fights at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sports wants them both on the same card in order to Whet the appetite of the British boxing public in a fight between them later on in the year on November 29th.

Hearn didn’t say who they’ll be facing on the July 12th card, but my guess it’s going to be a couple of harmless opponents that will make them look good, and won’t be a threat to beating them. The last thing Hearn needs is to put them in with a good opponent and watch them both get knocked out on the same card. Heck, Bellew almost got knocked out in his last fight against what some fans thought was a harmless 37-year-old Valery Brudov.

Bellew: I’m going to do worse than Kovalev did to Cleverly

bellew6By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew (21-2-1, 13 KO’s) didn’t have much good things to say about former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly’s cruiserweight debut last night against 39-year-old Shawn Corbin (17-5, 12 KO’s) at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. Cleverly did what he had to do in stopping the hapless Corbin in 2 rounds after nailing him with a flurry of punches. Bellew got on his soapbox and went into a long monologue about Cleverly and Johnny Nelson just let him yap away for a good 6 minutes of air time without stepping on his speech.

As far as Cleverly’s performance goes, he looked decent against a guy that basically had no chance of beating him. Bellew, who was working as one of the boxing commentators for Sky, took the opportunity to bad mouth Cleverly after the fight.

Selby outclasses Koasicha; Cleverly obliterates Corbin; Callum Smith and Rees also win

cleverly56677777By Scott Gilfoid: WBC International featherweight champion Lee Selby (19-1, 7 KO’s) defeated WBC #15 fringe contender Romulo Koasicha (21-4, 12 KO’s) by a tougher than expected 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. The final judges scores were 119-109, 119-109 and 119-110. Selby was stunned by a left hook by Koasicha in the 8th round, and he ended up with a swollen right eye from Koasicha’s left hooks.

There’s no other way of looking at this fight other than seeing it as a disappointing performance for Selby, as he struggled in the first three rounds when Koasicha, who is far from a big puncher, was putting pressure on Selby and walking him down. Koasicha was the bigger puncher, and he was nailing Selby with some good shots in the early going. After the 3rd, Koasicha stopped throwing as many punches, and he basically gave away the remainder of the fight by failing to go after Selby the way he needed to.
