Kiko Martinez confident of victory against Leo Santa Cruz

The fight will be televised by Showtime Championship Boxing. The Santa vs. Martinez fight has kind of dropped off the radar screen for the most part, as it’s been crowded out by the attention the Carl Frampton vs. Scott Quigg and Terence Crawford vs. Hank Lundy fights have been receiving.

Kiko Martinez: Frampton beats Quigg

frampton3By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF 122lb champion Kiko Martinez is predicting a victory for IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs) in his unification match against WBA World 122lb champion Scott Quigg (31-0-2, 23 KOs) in 11 days from now on February 27 at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Martinez, 29, has a pretty good idea of what both fighters are capable of doing inside the ring, as he’s lost to both guys by knockout. Frampton twice beat Martinez in 2013 and 2014. Quigg defeated Martinez last year in stopping him in the 2nd round in July 2015.

To Martinez’s credit, he’s won his last three fights since then and will be challenging for a world title on February 27 against the talented WBA Super World featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Leo Santa Cruz vs. Kiko Martinez on February 20 in Los Angeles, CA

Santa-Cruz-Mares-REsults (7)By Dan Ambrose: WBA featherweight Super champion Leo Santa Cruz (31-0-1, 17 KOs) will be defending his WBA title against 29-year-old former IBF super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez (34-6, 25 KOs) on February 20 in Los Angeles, California, according to Fight News. The venue for the fight still hasn’t been determined at this time.

This is an unusual choice of an opponent for Santa Cruz, because he’s a featherweight champion and Martinez fights in the 122lb division and was recently knocked out in two rounds by WBA super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg last year in July in the UK. Martinez has since won his last three fights against weak opposition in beating Miguel Gonzalez, Everth Briceno and Herald Molina.

What we learned last weekend

arreola45By Gav Duthie: A very interesting weekend of boxing has been and gone with various ramifications arising for future fights across the divisions. We witnessed top level action from Germany, the UK And the US and after catching up with it all this is what I have surmised.

Crolla is one unlucky guy

For most fans after Saturday night Anthony Crolla is a champion without the belt. For anyone who believes in Karma they may have to re-think after Crolla a local hero was once again robbed of his chance to realize a dream.

Perez-Crolla ends in draw; Quigg destroys Martinez; Murray stops Bajrektarevic

martinez111By Scott Gilfoid: Referee Howard Foster inserted himself into the fight in the 11th and 12th rounds, taking off points from Darleys Perez (33-1-1, 20 KOs) for low blows, resulting in his fight against #11 WBA fringe contender Anthony Crolla (29-5-2 11 KOs) being scored a 12 round draw on Saturday night at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

The final judges’ scores were 114-113 for Perez, 116-111 for Crolla and 113-113. I had Perez winning the fight 10 rounds to 2. I didn’t buy the low blow stuff that went on in the 11th and 12th. It was a case of Crolla pulling Perez’s head down while he was throwing punches, and I didn’t see how the referee could have taken points off from that. But besides that, Perez won both the 11th and 12th rounds on my card, so they were even rounds.

Weights: Quigg-Martinez, Perez-Crolla & Murray-Bajretarevic

crolla2(Photo credit: Thompson Boxing) By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated WBA “regular” super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22 KOs) made weight on Friday for his title defense against #11 WBA fringe contender Kiko Martinez (32-5, 24 KOs) for their fight this Saturday night at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Quigg weighed in at 121.75lbs. His opponent came in at 121.6. It’s difficult to get really excited about the Quigg-Martinez match-up because Martinez has beaten twice by Carl Frampton. I’m not sure what the purpose was in Quigg’s promoter Eddie Hear matching him against an opponent who has lost 2 out of his last 3 fights in Martinez, but whatever the case it’s not interesting.

Arum wants Donaire vs. Quigg in Dubai

quigg43By Scott Gilfoid: If WBA World super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22 KOs) can get past Kiko Martinez in their fight on July 18th in Manchester, we could see Quigg facing former four division world champ Nonito Donaire (34-3, 22 KOs) later this year in a fight that Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum wants to stage in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, according to Philboxing.com.

Donaire, 32, will have to win his fight on July 18th against Anthony Settoul at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, in Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. Arum feels that a fight between Donaire and Quigg might be more doable than trying to match Donaire against IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton.

Quigg interested in Donaire fight after Kiko Martinez

donaire75By Scott Gilfoid: If WBA World super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22 KOs) gets past former IBF 122lb champion Kiko Martinez (32-5, 24 KOs) in their fight on July 18th, Quigg could be facing former four division world champion Nonito Donaire (34-3, 22 KOs) in his next fight after that.

Donaire has a fight scheduled against France’s Anthony Settoul (20-3, 8 KOs) on July 18th at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, in Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. If Donaire wins his fight and Quigg beats Martinez in their fight at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK, then we could be seeing Donaire and Quigg mixing it up.

Scott Quigg to face Kiko Martinez on July 18th in Manchester

frampton21By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22 KOs) won’t be facing the guys that boxing fans want to see him fight in Carl Frampton or Guillermo Rigondeaux next, but he will be facing a guy that was recently beaten in former IBF 122 pound champion Kiko Martinez (32-5, 24 KOs) on July 18th at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Quigg-Martinez is not a fight that fans are pushing for right now, and it looks like Quigg’s promoter Eddie Hearn is continuing with his careful match-making for his fighter because Martinez doesn’t bring much to the table unless you want an ex-champion who was recently easily beaten by Frampton.
