Eddie Hearn to announce a major signing on Monday

hearn1By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn will be holding a press conference this Monday to make an announcement about a major signing to his Matchroom Sport stable. There’s speculation that it might be lightweight Kevin Mitchell (33-2, 24 KO’s) or possibly WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns. However, Burns’ promoter Frank Warren is saying he still has him under contract, so the chances are it won’t be him.

Mitchell lost his last fight to Burns by a 4th round knockout last September, and has now lost two out of his last four fights. I’m not sure how good of an acquisition he would be to Hearn’s stable if he is the one that will be signing for him. If Mitchell can’t beat the likes of Burns and Michael Katsidis, then what does that suggest about his future?

Burns’ victory over Mitchell really didn’t prove much

By Scott Gilfoid: Some boxing fans of WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) are really making a big deal about his 4th round TKO victory over Kevin Mitchell (33-2, 24 KO’s) last Saturday night at the Scottish Exhibition Centre, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. Some fans see this as a sign that Burns is the best fighter in the lightweight division.

Kevin Mitchell thinks Burns can unifiy the titles at lightweight

Image: Kevin Mitchell thinks Burns can unifiy the titles at lightweightBy Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) has made a believer out of Kevin Mitchell (33-2, 24 KO’s), who Burns stopped in the 4th round last Saturday night in Scotland. Mitchell believes that Burns has the talent to unify all the titles at lightweight, including the strap that’s held by WBC champ Antonio DeMarco.

Mitchell told the Times “He [Burns] could definitely unify the division. I don’t think any of the other world champions would bother him. He’s an awesome talent and there are no boundaries to stop him.”

Adrien Broner would get destroyed by Ricky Burns after the Scotsman annihilated Kevin Mitchell

Image: Adrien Broner would get destroyed by Ricky Burns after the Scotsman annihilated Kevin MitchellBy Marcus Stewart: Ricky Burns proved last Saturday night exactly why he’s a world champion after he completely destroyed the tough Englishman Kevin Mitchell by a 4th round stoppage. A fight between him and Demarco could be very interesting now, due to the fact that Demarco won his last fight in the space of a minute whereby he landed a straight right hand to his opponent’s chin which ultimately ended the bout.

Ricky Burns Vs Antonio Demarco is one to hype up, but Adrien Broner? To even put him into this category of elite lightweights is a complete joke.

Kevin Mitchell to be back in December

By Scott Gilfoid: Despite taking a beating by a guy much bigger than him last Saturday night, Kevin Mitchell (33-2, 24 KO’s) intends on quickly getting back in the ring to fight in December. Judging by how marked up Mitchell’s face was in losing by a 4th round TKO against WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) last Saturday night in Scotland, I’m not so certain that it’s a good idea for Mitchell to be fighting so soon.

Ricky Burns: A Scottish Hero

Image: Ricky Burns: A Scottish HeroBy Dan Henderson: Last night Scottish two weight world champion Ricky Burns proved me wrong and I’m more than happy to admit my mistake as I’m truly happy for him even if I feel for Kevin Mitchell.

I was lucky enough to be at the bout last night as I chose this card over a trip to Belfast and I was not left disappointed. In the run up to the fight I said it was a 50/50 fight between the two and even though I wanted Burns to win I chose Mitchell to win and how wrong I was as Ricky commanded the centre of the ring and blasted Mitchell out in four rounds and the Scottish fans including myself nearly roared the roof off the S.E.C.C, Glasgow.

Burns wants to unify the lightweight titles

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) says he wants to unify the lightweight straps after blowing out an undersized Kevin Mitchell (33-2, 24 KO’s) in a 4th round stoppage win tonight in Scotland. Burns doesn’t say who he specifically wants to fight first in looking to unify the 135 pound straps, but my guess is IBF champion Miguel Vazquez rather than the WBC champ Antonio DeMarco.

A HUGE Burns defeats Mitchell

By Scott Gilfoid: I swear, WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) looked like a small junior middleweight against a pumped up super featherweight Kevin Mitchell (33-2, 24 KO’s) in winning a 4th round TKO on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd of 9000 fans at the Scottish Exhibition Centre in Glasgow, Scotland.

Katsidis picks Mitchell to beat Burns tonight

Image: Katsidis picks Mitchell to beat Burns tonightBy Scott Gilfoid: Michael Katsidis sees Kevin Mitchell (33-1, 24 KO’s) emerging victorious tonight against WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (34-2, 9 KO’s) in what many boxing fans see as a can’t lose fight for Burns at the Scottish Exhibition Centre in Glasgow, Scotland. Katsidis has fought both Burns and Mitchell, destroying Mitchell in three rounds in 2010 and then losing a controversial 12 round decision to Burns last year in November.

Katsidis said to thesun.co.uk “Mitchell will do a number on Burns. No doubts. Burns got 30 percent Katsidis and just beat me on points and Mitchell got 90 percent Katsidis.”
