Kevin Mitchell to be back in December

By Scott Gilfoid: Despite taking a beating by a guy much bigger than him last Saturday night, Kevin Mitchell (33-2, 24 KO’s) intends on quickly getting back in the ring to fight in December. Judging by how marked up Mitchell’s face was in losing by a 4th round TKO against WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) last Saturday night in Scotland, I’m not so certain that it’s a good idea for Mitchell to be fighting so soon.

Mitchell told Kugan Cassius at Ifilm London “I’ll get back in the gym, training, working hard, and I’ll be back in again for December.”

I’d suggest that Mitchell either move back down again to super featherweight where there’s less of a chance of him being out-sided like he was against Burns or make sure he fights lightweights around the same size as him. Mitchell isn’t a big lightweight and facing heavier and taller guys like Burns is going to put him at a disadvantage every time.

Mitchell lost the fight to Burns based on the size factor for the fight. Had Mitchell been the same height and the same weight ad Burns, I’d have given him an excellent chance of winning last Saturday.

This is the second time that Mitchell has been blown out in an fight. He destroyed by a heavier Michael Katsidis in 2010 in a fight where Mitchell simply couldn’t match up due to the size difference. But you have to wonder about Mitchell’s chin. He was blown too easily by Katsidis, as well as Burns, who isn’t a big puncher. If a fighter with only 9 knockouts on his record like Burns is able to stop you then you know there’s a problem there.

Since Mitchell’s chin probably won’t be getting any better at this point in his career, he needs to think about trying to fix his defense and also he definitely needs to move down in weight. He can’t keep fighting bigger guys because he won’t last long at lightweight.
