Ricky Burns: A Scottish Hero

Image: Ricky Burns: A Scottish HeroBy Dan Henderson: Last night Scottish two weight world champion Ricky Burns proved me wrong and I’m more than happy to admit my mistake as I’m truly happy for him even if I feel for Kevin Mitchell.

I was lucky enough to be at the bout last night as I chose this card over a trip to Belfast and I was not left disappointed. In the run up to the fight I said it was a 50/50 fight between the two and even though I wanted Burns to win I chose Mitchell to win and how wrong I was as Ricky commanded the centre of the ring and blasted Mitchell out in four rounds and the Scottish fans including myself nearly roared the roof off the S.E.C.C, Glasgow.

For me what made this fight even better was the way both fighters conducted themselves in the run up to this massive fight, there was no trash talking, no brawling and no hatred which just shows you don’t need to go out off your way to hype a fight when it’s such an evenly contested bout and even after he was stopped Mitchell showed true class in congratulating the victor.

I have the utmost respect for both guys and I like both fighters because genuine down to earth people who need no silly gimmicks line other fighters. Mitchell can come again and will need to regroup and get back in the gym and work his way to another title shot, Burns on the other hand needs to look at getting himself set up with a unification shot with one of the other title holders or could he move up to light welterweight?

All in all this fight lived up to its billing and I’m happy I was there and had the chance to see this fight and feel this atmosphere. Ricky Burns proved once again he is probably one of the most underrated fighters in the world.
