Khan doubts Brook will face Errol Spence

khan778By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan says he thinks IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook is wasting his career by failing to take on the big names in the sport, and he thinks the soon to be 30-year-old Brook needs to step it up and start facing the best. However, Khan suspects that Brook will vacate his IBF 147lb title rather than facing unbeaten Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs), who is one step away from becoming Brook’s new IBF mandatory challenger.

Khan calls Brook “Mr. Mandatory” due to him having already fought two mandatory challengers in his two years as the IBF welterweight champion. But Khan thinks that Brook will choose not to fight his next mandatory if it winds up being the 26-year-old Spence.

Has Kell Brook’s big fight fallen on his lap?

brook6By Gav Duthie: After dispatching of two mandatories in the last year (Jo Jo Dan, Bizier) that Kell Brook could have beaten on the same night he now has a real live danger in front of him with newly instated mandatory challenger Errol Spence Jnr 20-0 (17).

After failing to secure a fight with Amir Khan, Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn has stated he is negotiating with Miguel Cotto, Danny Garcia, Manny Pacquiao, Adrien Broner, Tim Bradley and Jessie Vargas but a bout against rising star Spence might be the best option. Is this the fight Brook has been looking for or is the risk greater than the reward.

Mandatory

Brook has made 3 defences of his title with two of them coming against IBF mandatory challengers.

Errol Spence Jr. must face Konstantin Ponomarev in IBF eliminator

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions2By Scott Gilfoid: Well, you knew it was too good to be true. Instead of undefeated Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) being he mandatory challenger for IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) straightaway, the International Boxing Federation is requiring that Spence face #3 IBF Konstantin Ponomarev (30-0, 13 KOs) in an official IBF eliminator before he can become Brook’s mandatory. In other words, it wasn’t enough that Spence beat the highly accomplished Chris Algieri last Saturday night.

Spence will need to fight the 23-year-old light hitting Ponomarev before he can earn the mandatory spot to fight Brook. This doesn’t mean that Brook will have extra time to make voluntary defenses for the next two years, because he’s going to need to start negotiations for a fight against the winner of the Spence vs. Ponomarev until late in the year in October. Ponomarev = Algieri 2.0 in my view. For the fans who didn’t get to see Spence fight Algieri last Saturday night, they’ll get a chance to see Spence fight a very similar fighter in Algieri in Ponomarev. I see this as a pure slaughter, and it’s too bad the IBF couldn’t find a better fighter to rank at #3 than Ponomarev. Spence is #2 with the IBF, and sadly Kevin Bizier is #1.

Dibella: I don’t think Kell Brook wants any part of Errol Spence

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions10By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) has had things pretty easy during his long 12-year pro career in the sport.

Brook is about to turn 30-years-old next month and the only name fighter he has on his resume is Shawn Porter. Errol Spence (20-0, 17 KOs) wants to give Brook a real name to add to his resume by facing him this year if he’s ready to step up a couple levels and take the fight rather than continuing with his trend of facing weaker contenders like Frankie Gavin, Jo Jo Dan and Kevin Bizier.

Khan ambivalent about Kell Brook fight

khan45By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan isn’t worried about IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook right now. He’s got bigger fish to fry against the tank-like WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who Khan faces next month in less than 30 days on May 7 on HBO PPV.

It’s a dangerous for Khan that could result in him getting his head taken off if he’s not careful in the ring. It’s also a fight that could bring Khan a bucket full of sweet cash if the fight brings in over 1 million PPV buys on HBO.

It could easily be Khan’s biggest payday of his career. The money that Khan could get for facing Brook would likely pale in comparison due to the huge audience of potential buyers for Khan vs. Canelo in the States on PPV.

Errol Spence wants Kell Brook next

1-Spence v Algieri_Fight_Ryan Greene _ Premier Boxing Champions9By Scott Gilfoid: Errol Spence (20-0, 17 KOs) showed last night why people are picking him out to be Floyd Mayweather Jr’s replacement as the biggest star in the sport. Spence completely crushed Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) in knocking him around the ring like a rag doll before putting him out of his misery in the 5th round with a perfectly placed left hook to the head that left Algieri on the canvas in a pile of bruised flesh.

With Algieri’s scalp now in his possession, Spence is now targeting IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) to take his IBF strap from him. Spence says he has no doubt in his mind that he’ll beat the 29-year-old Brook when he gets him inside the ring, and he’s willing to go over to England to wipe him out if he has to.

What’s next after last Saturday night

1-WardBarrera_Hoganphotos3By Gav Duthie: There was quite an interesting night of boxing on Saturday night with action in the UK and US. Its been a relatively quiet March and although my interest was registered last night all of the fights were predictable in their outcomes. The question is what next for these talents.

Khan: Kell Brook is wasting his career

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC Amir Khan believes that IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook is burning through his pro career and wasting it by not fighting the best in the sport. Khan sees Brook as doing little more than using up his pro career fighting weaker record-padding opponents like Kevin Bizier, Jo Jo Dan and Frankie Gavin rather than taking the effort to fight the very best in the sport.

Sanchez likes Golovkin vs. Kell Brook fight

brook6By Scott Gilfoid: Trainer Abel Sanchez likes what he’s hearing about IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) being interested in moving up to middleweight to take on unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) at a catch-weight of 157 pounds.

Sanchez is open to the fight taking place between Brook and Golovkin if it can be negotiated between Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler and Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport. Right now, Brook is talking about wanting to fight one of the top welterweights in the summer in Sheffield, UK. Brook is hoping Hearn can get him a fight against one the following names: Tim Bradley, Danny Garcia, Jessie Vargas, Manny Pacquiao, Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.

It definitely helps that Brook has mentioned so many different names as potential opponents for his summer fight in Sheffield.

Kell Brook says he should retire if he doesn’t get big summer fight

brook455By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) says he should retire if he can’t get a big fight in the summer against one of the big names in the sport. Brook beat his #1 IBF mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier (25-3, 17 KOs) by a 2nd round knockout last Saturday night at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, UK.

Brook, 29, now has two voluntary defenses available to him for the remainder of 2016, and he wants to get a big name. It’s extremely important that Brook gets a big name within his next two fights, because when his next mandatory defense comes around, he’s likely going to need to face unbeaten talent Errol Spence Jr. (19-0, 16 KOs), and he’s someone will almost surely KO Brook and end his short reign as the IBF title.

However, there’s a good chance that Brook will vacate his IBF tile when his next mandatory defense comes due. Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn is already hinting that Brook could move up to 154 in the very near future.
