Kell Brook vs. Jessie Vargas deal reached for August in Sheffield

brook6 By Scott Gilfoid: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has reached a deal for a unification fight between his fighter WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) and IBF 147lb champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) for a fight in August in Sheffield, UK, according to Dan Rafael. The contracts are supposed to signed this coming week.

This is obviously a great deal for the 30-year-old Brook because he’s got a light punching fighter in Vargas coming over to his own hometown to fight him. Many boxing fans see the 27-year-old Vargas as a paper champion, and I wouldn’t disagree with that.

Vargas is low hanging fruit for Brook in my view compared to the bigger punching champions Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman. But it’s also the only fight that Brook could probably get in terms of the upper cuts.

Liam Smith wants Kell Brook fight after Radosevic

Mosley says Ponomarev will be tough fight for Spence

By Scott Gilfoid: Former multi-world champion Shane Mosley expects unbeaten #3 IBF Konstantin Ponomarev (30-0, 13 KOs) to give unbeaten #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) a lot of problems when the two of them meet up in an IBF welterweight eliminator out this summer.

Spence, 26, is being asked to fight in an International Boxing Federation eliminator in order to become the mandatory challenger to IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook. It’s kind of a controversial move though because Spence just finished beating a similar fighter to Ponomarev in Chris Algieri, and now he’s forced to jump through another hoop to get the Brook fight.

Jessie Vargas vs. Kell Brook possible for UK in summer

brook43 By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it’s starting to look possible that Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is going to be able to lure WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) to come over to the UK to fight IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) in unification fight.

Vargas, 27, initially sounded dead set against the idea of fighting in Brook’s home country of England, but he’s now starting to sound like he might do it. Vargas just wants to make sure he gets fair judging and doesn’t go there and get royally robbed.

Vargas had a fight end strangely last year where he had Tim Bradley out on his feet only to have the referee end the fight 10 seconds early before he could put the coup de grace on the aging fighter.

Khan says Kell Brook has talked himself out of a fight

By Scott Gilfoid: Well, I figured IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s yapping about Amir Khan would lead to an empty dirt road and I was right. I hate to say it. Khan said today that Brook isn’t in his plans for the future, and that he’s tired of his lip. Brook’s mouthing off has led to Khan putting the 30-year-old champion Brook on the ignore list. As such, instead of Brook getting that big stadium fight against Khan, he’ll have to try and get someone like WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas.

I wish Brook a lot of luck trying to fill a stadium in a fight against him. Vargas. The American fighter has already said he won’t be fighting Brook in the UK. He says the only way he’ll fight Brook is if he comes to the U.S to take the fight.

Hearn says Errol Spence’s team turned down Kell Brook fight

By Jeff Aranow: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn says he was told by the management for unbeaten #2 IBF Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) that he isn’t ready to fight Brook for a world title yet.

Hearn says he asked them if they wanted the fight with Brook, but was told that he’s not ready to fight for a world title yet. It’s hard to imagine the management for Spence turning down a fight against Brook, because that’s a fight that Spence badly wants and he’s in position to fight for the title.

Spence recently stopped former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri in five rounds on April 16 last month at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. At the time, it was thought that Spence would be the IBF mandatory challenger after that win.

Kell Brook: I punch as hard as Canelo

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) has changed his mind about wanting to defend his IBF title against Amir Khan after seeing how badly he was knocked out by WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last Saturday night.

Brook thinks it would be a bad idea for him to fight Khan now because he believes he can punch as hard as Canelo and he’d knock Khan out too. Brook wants to see Khan come back from this loss, because he thinks it was a bad one for him.

Khan hasn’t said anything about wanting to fight Brook, so there’s no worry of Brook having to tell Khan to get lost if/when he comes looking to get a fight against him.

Kell Brook already calling out Amir Khan for a fight

brook6 By Scott Gilfoid: Just hours after Amir Khan (31-4, 19 KOs) was knocked out by the hulking WBC middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) last Saturday night on HBO PPV, IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook took the opportunity to call Khan out for a fight.

Just why the 29-year-old Brook would want to fight Khan under those circumstances is hard to know. It just reeks of desperation on Brook’s part in trying to get a fight against someone like Khan, who was viciously knocked out in a way where you have to worry about whether he’ll be fully able to function in his career at the same level after this. Brook just seems too needy right now and that’s off putting.

It just looks to be like Brook is showing scavenger traits in wanting a fighter that has been knocked out like Khan for his next fight rather than someone that is actually doing well in Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs). I’m just saying.

Khan says Kell Brook must earn fight against him

By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) says he wants IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook to fight several bigger names before he’ll consider facing him in the future. Right now with the way that the 29-year-old Brook has been facing lesser fighters, Khan isn’t sure whether he’ll ever fight him.

Khan says Brook has only fought Shawn Porter in terms of notable fighters. He wants to see him fight three bigger names before he’ll agree to fight him. Unfortunately, Khan has been giving Brook these same instructions for the last two years now, and instead of Brook stepping it up to show that he’s trying to earn the fight against him, we’ve seen him fight Frankie Gavin, Jo Jo Dan and Kevin Bizier.

Brook gives Khan a chance to beat Canelo

By Jeff Aranow: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook has every reason in the world to want Amir Khan to lose his fight this Saturday night against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez due to Khan having turned down fight offers from him and his promoter Eddie Hearn for the last several years including recently.

Brook still is open enough to say he thinks the 29-year-old Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) has a chance of pulling off an upset against Canelo (46-1-1, 32 KOs) if he fights the perfect fight and doesn’t get caught up trying to slug with the Mexican fighter.
