Kell Brook already calling out Amir Khan for a fight

brook6By Scott Gilfoid: Just hours after Amir Khan (31-4, 19 KOs) was knocked out by the hulking WBC middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) last Saturday night on HBO PPV, IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook took the opportunity to call Khan out for a fight.

Just why the 29-year-old Brook would want to fight Khan under those circumstances is hard to know. It just reeks of desperation on Brook’s part in trying to get a fight against someone like Khan, who was viciously knocked out in a way where you have to worry about whether he’ll be fully able to function in his career at the same level after this. Brook just seems too needy right now and that’s off putting.

It just looks to be like Brook is showing scavenger traits in wanting a fighter that has been knocked out like Khan for his next fight rather than someone that is actually doing well in Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs). I’m just saying.

It’s kind of off putting to see someone trying to take a fight against someone that has been knocked out rather than fighting a highly ranked contender.

“I’m here all British showdown @amirkingkhan,” said Kell Brook on his Twitter.

Khan has talking about wanting to move back down to welterweight to fight WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia. But even that fight wouldn’t be a good idea for Khan, and it definitely wouldn’t be a good idea for Garcia, because it’ll make him look as bad as Brook would. Khan is ranked #1 by the WBC, so there’s probably not much Garcia can do about it if Khan elects to push for his mandatory shot at his WBC title. It’s definitely not a good idea though for Khan.

His manager Al Haymon needs to convince him to take some tune-ups to get his confidence back and to make sure he can take a punch without nose diving into the canvas. Besides, Khan needs some tune-ups anyway, because he hasn’t exactly been the most active of welterweights lately.

Before his fight against Canelo, Khan hadn’t fought in an entire years. Khan should have been fighting all that time. I think it was highly stupid on Khan’s part to go from a 12 month layoff straight into a fight against Canelo. I don’t know why but Canelo seems to be making a habit of fighting rusty fighters nowadays. In the last couple of years, three out of five of Canelo’s opponents have come off long layoffs in Khan, James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo.

I don’t think Brook has been paying too much attention to what Khan has been saying in the media in giving directions to Brook about him earning a fight against him. Khan says he wants to see Brook fight three good well known opponents so that he can help build up their fight. Khan thinks Brook has wasted too much of his career fighting weaker opponents. Recently, Brook has had to fight two weak mandatory challengers picked out by the International Boxing Federation in Jo Jo Dan and Kevin Bizier. Those fights were pretty much like voluntary defenses rather than mandatory defenses because those were really mediocre fighters.
I don’t have much faith in Brook upping the level of his opposition. He’s burned through 12 years of his career fighting lower level opposition, and I can’t see him changing his stripes at this point.

If Brook wants a payday fight, then he needs to start fighting guys like Errol Spence so that he can increase his popularity enough to lure the top welterweights in the U.S to fight him. Right now, it’s not worth it for any of the top names to fight Brook in the U.S because he’s not known due to him wasting too much time fighting guys like Bizier, Jo Jo Dan and Matthew Hatton.

I know Khan wants Brook to help make their fight bigger so that they can get bigger paydays, but I think Khan will probably need to fight him under circumstances like this. I mean, I don’t see Brook breaking his pattern of fighting weak opponents during his career. As such, if Khan chooses to wait until Brook starts fighting live bodies like Spence, Keith Thurman, Canelo or Gennady Golovkin, then he could be waiting forever because I don’t see him ever doing that. Brook seems to be guarding his unbeaten record.
