Maidana-Thurman possible for April

Image: Maidana-Thurman possible for AprilBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions is looking to put together a fight card with welterweight contenders Marcos Maidana (32-3, 29 KO’s) facing highly hyped unbeaten Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) and unbeaten featherweight Gary Russell Jr. (21-0, 13 KO’s) facing an opponent still to be determined in April in a doubleheader, according to RingTV.

Golden Boy was hoping to get Jhonny Gonzalez for Russell Jr., but he reportedly wasn’t interested in the fight. Hopefully they can find a good opponent for Russell Jr. because he really needs to step it up already and start facing some better opposition if he wants to keep improving as a fighter.

Keith Thurman looks good enough to give Saul Alvarez problems

Image: Keith Thurman looks good enough to give Saul Alvarez problemsBy Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) made Carlos Quintana (29-4, 23 KO’s) look really bad in losing to Thurman by a 4th round TKO on the Andre Berto vs. Robert Guerrero card in Ontario, California. The win by the 5’11” Thurman showed not only his raw power, which is quite top notch, but also poise and maturity that few fighters his age have.

Thurman looks ready to take on WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Vanes Martirosyan, Miguel Cotto, Erislandy Lara and Cornelius Bundrage. I can see Thurman giving all of those guys a real run for their money with his power. Alvarez, 5’9″, isn’t a very big junior middleweight and I think Thurman would give him some problems with his height, reach and power. The same goes for the 5’7″ Cotto. He’s a lot smaller than Thurman, and he tends to break down when he gets in wars with strong fighters. Thurman might be too big and power for the likes of Cotto.

Thurman impressive in defeating Quintana

Image: Thurman impressive in defeating QuintanaBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated welterweight/junior middleweight Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) looked like a one-man wrecking crew last night in destroying former WBO welterweight champion Carlos Quintana (29-4, 23 KO’s) by a 4th round TKO at Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California, USA.

Thurman showed in this fight that he’ll be a problem for anyone at welterweight, and he’d also be more than a handful at 154 because of his power. Thurman is going to have to fight in both divisions unfortunately in order to get the best fights, because he’s probably not going to get a lot interest from the top fighters in mixing it up with him.

Guerrero defeats Berto; Thurman stops Quintana

Image: Guerrero defeats Berto; Thurman stops QuintanaBy Jim Dower: In a foul plagued war WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) successfully defending his title by beating former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California, USA.

The final judges’ scores were 116-110, 116-110, and 116-110, all for Guerrero. Berto was knocked down twice in the fight. He was knocked down in the 1st round after Guerrero grabbed him around the back of the head with his right hand and held and hit him with four big shots that knocked him down. It’s unclear why the referee didn’t waive off the knockdown because it was a clear case of holding and hitting by Guerrero.

Keith Thurman about his fight with Quintana: Don’t blink

Image: Keith Thurman about his fight with Quintana: Don't blinkBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated junior middleweight prospect Keith Thurman (18-0, 17 KO’s) sees himself as a future world champion in both the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions. Thurman takes that first step in realizing his dreams on Saturday night against contender Carlos Quintana (29-3, 23 KO’s) at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California.

Thurman is one of those types of fighters that has supreme confidence in his ability, and perhaps too much confidence given the way he’s looked. Despite never having faced any 1st tier opponents until now, Thurman has already called out the big names in the sport such as Floyd Mayweather and Tim Bradley.

Keith Thurman vs. Carlos Quintana on Saturday night

Image: Keith Thurman vs. Carlos Quintana on Saturday nightBy Dan Ambrose: The self-hyping unbeaten Keith Thurman (18-0, 17 KO’s) will be taking a big step up in class on Saturday night against #4 WBO, #6 IBF, #15 WBC junior middleweight contender Carlos Quintana (29-3, 23 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout on the undercard of the Robert Guerrero vs. Andre Berto fight card on HBO at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California, USA.

This is going to be a really interesting fight to see how the 23-year-old Thurman does against the southpaw Quintana because this is such a huge step up in class for Thurman. Quintana can do a lot things and he’s arguably a lot more skilled than Thurman. However, we’ve seen fights where Quintana has struggled against big punchers in losses to Andre Berto and Miguel Cotto. We’ve also seen Quintana taken out in one round by Paul Williams, who never was a huge puncher.

Tyson Fury back in the ring on December 1st; Thurman-Quintana on Nov. 24th

Image: Tyson Fury back in the ring on December 1st; Thurman-Quintana on Nov. 24thBy Scott Gilfoid: Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s) says on his twitter that he plans on getting back in the in the ring on December 1st, likely against yet another weak opponent like the ones he’s been facing his entire four-year-old pro career. Fury had been hoping to get a fight against former WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev, but that’s not likely to happen.

Getting Chagaev in the ring might too big difficult for Fury and his promoter because of his high asking price. It’s too bad because Chagaev might be able to give Fury lots of problems with his southpaw stance and excellent power. I could see Chagaev winning this fight if it were to be made.

Keith Thurman hoping to get Malignaggi or Bradley in near future

Image: Keith Thurman hoping to get Malignaggi or Bradley in near futureBy Dan Ambrose: The junior middleweight-sized unbeaten welterweight prospect Keith Thurman (18-0, 17 KO’s) will be back in the ring in November against an opponent still to be determined, according to Fighthype.com. And like before, the 23-year-old Thurman still has the following fighters on his hit list: Paulie Malignaggi, Tim Bradley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Thurman, 5’11”, wants to get Malignaggi, the WBA World welterweight champion, next after Thurman fights in November.

However, with Thurman not even ranked in then top 15 in the welterweight division he needs to save his breath none of those guys are going to voluntarily fight a huge welterweight without a ranking. Thurman needs to get ranked and prove that he can beat a quality fighter rather than just the weak 2nd tier welterweights he’s been facing.
