Thurman won a 12 round split decision in a fight televised by Showtime Championship Boxing on CBS. Garcia was the one putting the pressure on Thurman during the last 4 rounds.

Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) unified boxing’s glamour division with a split-decision victory over Danny Garcia (33-1, 19 KOs) on Saturday, defending his WBA belt and picking up Garcia’s WBC crown on boxing’s biggest stage in primetime on CBS from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™.

The event, which was produced by SHOWTIME Sports® for the CBS Television Network, marked the highest-attended boxing event in Barclays Center history with 16,533 fans witnessing just the 10th unification in division history.

By Bob Smith: Tonight’s Keith Thurman vs. Danny Garcia match-up is a unique and special fight in many ways. For one, it is a rare welterweight unification fight between two undefeated fighters in their primes. There have not been very many of these. Secondly, it is a televised fight, and as a result has the potential to bring boxing back to free television rather than pay-per-view. Third, it is an intriguing match up, even in comparison with some good match ups and very fun fights to watch like Shawn Porter-Thurman, Garcia-Robert Guerrero, and Thurman-Guerrero.
By Harry Rowland: After having to watch Danny Garcia in far too many foregone conclusions of late, we finally have an absolute 50/50 match-up in Keith Thurman. At this particular time this is the most relevant fight in the Welterweight division. We have two unbeaten fighters with similar experience, and both in their prime.
A very recent common opponent is Robert Guerrero, who took them both the distance in losing but competitive efforts. Thurman appeared to produce the more dominate win, using his foot speed to stay away from attacks, and also knock him down late. Thurman has the slight edge in power with 79% of fights ending in stoppage to Garcia’s 58%. This is more to do with Thurman’s speed as his power shots come unexpectedly. Their actual standing foot planted power is around the same.
By Jeff Aranow: Former middleweight champion Peter Quillin is looking forward to seeing tonight’s unification fight between WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) and WBC champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (33-0, 19 KOs) in their match on Premier Boxing Champions on CBS.
Quillin thinks the Garcia-Thurman fight is a match that could go either way depending on whether Garcia can land one of his big power shots. If there’s going to be a knockout in this fight, then Quillin sees Garcia being the one to get it. Quillin says that Thurman can be hurt, as he’s been hurt a number of ties in his fights.
