By Jeff Aranow: WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia and WBA champion Keith “One Time’ Thurman both weighed in successfully on Friday for their fight this Saturday night on CBS, presented by Premier Boxing Champions. Garcia (33-0, 19 KOs) weighed in at 146.5 pounds, and looked in good shape as usual. Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) weighed in at slightly more at 146.8 lbs.

During the face off, Thurman and Garcia came face to face. It looked pretty harmless though. Garcia’s father/trainer Angel Garcia was jawing during the face off, but he didn’t get too involved like he normally does.

This is a fight that could go either way. Thurman has the speed and size advantage, but Garcia has a powerful left hook that will be the equalizer. Garcia is good timing his opponents when they’re coming forward to try and land. This could be bad news for Thurman if he doesn’t focus on his boxing skills. He’s become predictable with the way he likes to pressure his opponents. Thurman is always looking to land fast combinations in his fights. That could be his undoing against Garcia, because he’s a dangerous counter puncher.

Garcia has said that he’ll be looking to hurt Thurman with body shots. Thurman was hurt by Luis Collazo with a hard body shot in their fight in July 2015. Thurman didn’t go down, but he was distress for a moment. Thurman came on and stopped Collazo in round 7. However, that fight showed that Thurman doesn’t have the ability to stand in the pocket, because he doesn’t take punishment nearly as well as he dishes it out.

Thurman likes to hit and then get away quickly before his opponents have a chance to hit him back. That style of fighting usually works for him. If Garcia can time Thurman, we could see him lose for the first time on Saturday night. Either way, it’s great fight for the boxing fans.

Thurman-Garcia will be fighting at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

In the co-feature weights, unbeaten junior middleweight contender Erickson Lubin (17-0, 12 KOs) weighed in at 153.8 pounds for his fight against the hard hitting Jorge Cota (25-1, 22 KOs). For his part, Cota weighed in at 153.8 lbs. as well. This is a good step up for the 21-year-old Lubin. His management are slowly grooming him for a title shot. With Jermall Charlo moving up to middleweight, it opens up the division a little more for Lubin. Charlo would probably be a step too far for the 5’11” Lubin at this early point in his career. He still needs to be matched carefully.
