Roach: Marquez will come to the table for Pacquiao fight sooner or later

roach6666By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach hasn’t given up on the idea of his fighter WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao fighting 40-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez for a fifth time this coming November.

Roach is like a dog that won’t let go of a bone, he badly wants the aging Marquez to agree to another fight with Pacquiao for some reason. It obviously must still bug Roach how Marquez knocked Pacquiao down twice in their last two years ago and left him face down on the canvas sawing logs.

“I think he’ll [Marquez] come to the table sooner or later,” Roach said to theboxingvoice.com.

I hope Roach isn’t holding his breath waiting for Marquez to come to the table and accept a small slice of the pie instead of taking half of it.

Marquez wants $20 million for Pacquiao 5th fight, says Roach

roach564By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is complaining that Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) is asking for $20 million for a fifth fight against Pacquiao in November, and that Marquez’s request is a show stopper. Roach says that a reasonable amount for Marquez to make for the fight is $10 million only, according to thesweetscience.com. But with Marquez asking for $20 million, it means that a fight can’t take place between them.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum recently said that Pacquiao will be getting around $30 million for his fights. If this is true, it means that there’s a potential $40 million pot of money that can be divided up for a 5th Pacquiao-Marquez fight. If you divide the money equally, then each fighter can walk away with $20 million, and Pacquiao would get his chance of trying to avenge his loss to Marquez.

Is Marquez avoiding Pacquiao?

marquez45By Yannis Mihanos: Since his explosive victory over Manny Pacquiao in 2012, the great Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez has been reluctant in getting again in the ring with Pacquiao. The question is has the Marquez decided to take the easy way by cherry picking opponents?

Marquez will be turning 41 years old in August and he’s definitely not a spring chicken anymore, but he still shows signs that there is life in him for boxing. His last fight was a very easy victory against Mike Alvarado. Alvarado was a tailored made opponent for Marquez, with no fast body movement, very static and without the same power like Marquez has. Alvarado was an easy target for Marquez.

Beristain: Marquez could skip Pacquiao fight, and choose a different 147 lb. champion

marquez000005By Chris Williams: Trainer Nacho Beristain says that Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) is thinking of picking one of the other welterweight champions to fight next instead of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.

This is bad news potentially for Bob Arum of Top Rank because he was really counting on Marquez agreeing to a 5th fight with Pacquiao. It would have brought Pacquiao back up to 1 million pay-per-view buy level, if only for this one fight. If Marquez chooses another champion instead of Pacquiao, Arum will then be stuck matching Pacquiao up with Ruslan Provodnikov. In other words, a fight that would be lucky to bring in 400,000 PPV buys.

Jeff Mayweather sees no point in Pacquiao-Marquez 5 fight

pac006By Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez are poised for a 5th fight between them in November, and for a lot of boxing fans they’ve grown tired of seeing these two fighters face each other again and again. It’s not that they haven’t had some exciting fights over the year, because they’ve had some good fights. But fans want to see the two of them face other people and not be stuck on an endless rematch cycle.

One of the people that are tired of see Pacquiao and Marquez fight each other is Jeff Mayweather. He sees a 5th fight between them as redundant and proving little at this point. Jeff thinks that Marquez has won 3 of the 4 fights with Pacquiao already, and that he put an exclamation point on who the better fighter is with his 6th round knockout win 2 years ago.

Beristain thinks Pacquiao would be difficult fight for Marquez at this point

marquez5By Chris Williams: Juan Manuel Marquez’s trainer Nacho Beristain is still hoping that he’ll choose not to take a fifth fight against Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao for November. Beristain is trying his best to persuade Marquez not to take the fight, because he sees it as a fight where Marquez has little to gain and a lot to lose. Marquez wants the fight because it would give him his best chance at trying to win a 5th division world title.

Marquez matches up much better with Pacquiao than he does against the other welterweight champions Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shawn Porter, so he’s going after a guy that is the most beatable for him.

Marquez’s trainer doesn’t want him to take Pacquiao fight

marquez8By Chris Williams: Trainer Nacho Beristain is hoping to talk his fighter Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40’s) out of facing Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) in November. Marquez is undecided whether he’ll take the fight with the 35-year-old Pacquiao after beating Mike Alvarado in a WBO welterweight eliminator bout this month.

The World Boxing Organization set the fight up as an eliminator bout for their 147 lb. strap despite Alvarado never having fought in the division and having no ranking in their top 15 at the time of the fight. Marquez wasn’t ranked in the top 15 either by the WBO.

“I do not care what you have to do , I do not care who is angry, but I will do everything possible to prevent Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao from stepping into the ring with Pacquiao a fifth time ,” said Beristain to ESPN. [He] has nothing to prove, people will remember you for what you did in your career, for having given big fights people and for having faced the best of his time,” Beristain said.

Provodnikov a possible opponent for Pacquiao if Marquez doesn’t take fight

provodnikov7By Chris Williams: WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s) has been mentioned by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum as a potential opponent for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) for his next fight on November 16th in Macao, China. The Russian born Provodnikov is strictly a fallback option for Arum to put in with Pacquiao if the guy he wants to fight him Juan Manuel Marquez fails to agree to the fight.

Provodnikov at least would bring some new blood for Pacquiao to fight instead of the same old guys. That’s at least one positive. Provodnikov is someone who does well against fighters with poor mobility or guys that look to trade with him. He struggles badly when he faces opposition that moves on him.
