Let’s appreciate Juan Manuel Marquez

By John Kelvin: Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) is a future hall of famer and one of the greatest Mexican boxers of all time. There is no need to list his various accomplishments because we already know what great things he has done in his career. Marquez’s great legacy is in danger of being tarnished by his some uneducated fans who think he is taking some sort of performance enhancing drug to aid his power punching.

The legacy of Juan Manuel Marquez and his future options

marquez4By Gav Duthie: Last Saturday night we witnessed another master class display of ring generalship and boxing IQ from the ageless Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez 56-7-1 (40). His 12 round unanimous decision win over Mike Alvarado 34-3 (23) was flawless bar a knockdown in the 9th round as he was going in for the kill himself. Juan has mentioned retirement several times over the last year or so. He has an estimated net worth of $12 million dollars and being a qualified accountant he is likely to be quite sensible with his finances.

Marquez told us on Saturday he would consult his family (the wife probably) before making any decisions on his future. If he does decide to carry on who does he fight next and if he retires how good was he?

Is Arum misjudging interest in Pacquiao-Marquez 5 fight?

pac7169By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is waiting for the word from 40-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) to find out whether he’ll agree to face Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) for a 5th time. Arum has been highly interested in getting Marquez to agree to a 5th fight with Pacquiao ever since the Mexican warrior knocked Pacquiao out cold in December of 2012.

The fight drew 1.15 million PPV buy, and the chances were high that it might have pulled in better numbers if Arum had been able to get Pacquiao back in the ring in early 2013 for a quick rematch. But now too much time has gone by and I don’t see the interest being as high for a 5th fight between them.

Alvarado thinks Provodnikov would beat Marquez

provodnikov2By Dan Ambrose: Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s) wasted his chance to beat Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) last Saturday night by fighting too passively and not throwing enough punches in their fight in Inglewood, California. Alvarado believes that if he had jumped on Marquez after knocking him down in the 9th, he would have stopped him. Additionally, Alvarado thinks that Marquez would be vulnerable against someone like WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16 KO’s).

“Provodnikov would probably exploit that out of him. Provodnikov just comes at you and fights aggressive,” Alvarado said. “If Marquez could knock him out, that’s the only way I think he could beat him.”

Marquez beats Alvarado by just about a shutout

marquez44444By James Allen: Observers can be forgiven for wondering whether Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) was beginning to slip just a little bit as the his fight against Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s) on May 17th approached. His last outing saw him suffer a lopsided points defeat to fellow Manny Pacquiao conqueror Timothy Bradley last October, where the younger man’s athleticism was a telling factor.

Ten months previously he had achieved what will be remembered as his most famous victory as he left long-time rival Manny Pacquiao face-down and motionless after landing a devastating right hand with only seconds left in the sixth round. However, the clinical finish combined with an earlier knockdown in the third flattered to deceive.

Brandon Rios wants Juan Manuel Marquez fight

alvarado66663By Dan Ambrose: Brandon Rios says he wants to fight Juan Manuel Marquez next. He doesn’t want to see Marquez fight Manny Pacquiao for a 5th time, because he thinks he’s capable of doing the job on the 40-year-old Marquez after watching him beat Mike Alvarado last Saturday night. Rios thinks that Alvarado would have beaten Marquez if he had pressured him instead of trying to play a chess match for 12 rounds by boxing him.

If given the chance to fight Marquez, Rios says he’d go after him. Rios doesn’t say what the outcome would be other than it would be a different one than the one we saw last Saturday night with Marquez beating Alvarado by a fairly lopsided 12 round decision in Inglewood, California.

Arum: I’m confident I can make the fight [Pacquiao-Marquez 5]

marquez7776676By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum was quite pleased with the results of last night’s fight between Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) and Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s), because Arum now has the much more popular Marquez as the winner for a possible 5th fight against Arum’s No.1 fighter in his Top Rank stable Manny Pacquiao for later this year. Arum is now waiting for the word from Marquez whether he’ll agree to take the fight with Pacquiao, and Arum feels very confident he can put the fight together if he gives him the green light.

Marquez would really sink Arum’s battleship if he were to turn around and say ‘No thanks’ to the idea of him fighting Pacquiao a 5th time. Arum doesn’t have a lot of other options for Pacquiao to fight for his next fight for later this year. Unless Marquez says yes to the rematch, Arum’s only hope for an interesting fight for Pacquiao is if Oscar De La Hoya can make a fight happen between his Golden Boy Promotions company and Top Rank.

Pacquiao-Marquez V must be made

marquez88888By Alon Calinao Dy: In the coming days, Manny Pacquiao will likely sign a deal to fight his nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez for a fifth bout between them. Lot’s of Mexican fans are saying that it was not lucky punch that knocked Pacquiao out in their last fight, but it was a perfect timing that hit the “Mexicutioner” last December 2012.

Some fight fans do not want for Pacquiao-Marquez showdown to happen, but it doesn’t stop people from thinking that Marquez was about to be defeated when he delivered a single powerful shot with eyes closed that automatically ended the thrilling bout.

Until now, everyone knows this boxing game means there is a big moment for every boxer no matter how excellent a boxer is.

Marquez beats Alvarado: What’s next for Juan Manuel?

marquez999By Yannis Mihanos: This last Saturday night, 2 brawlers Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) and Marc Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s) gave fans all the entertainment that a boxing fan could hope for in their fight at the Forum in Inglewood, California. There were 2 stunning knockdowns (one for each fighter) and many wild hurtful punches. The end result was a 12 round unanimous decision victory for Marquez.

The 40-year-old Marquez won the fight fair and square as he was clearly the better man, and the one who inflicted the most damage. One look at the face of Alvarado after the fight told the whole story. Alvarado’s face was cut up and badly swollen. Marquez was clearly one class above warrior Alvarado.

Marquez unsure if he’ll fight Pacquiao again

marquez777aBy Chris Williams: Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) isn’t sure yet whether he’ll give WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao another fight. Last night, Marquez pitched a near shutout in defeating former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Forum, in Inglewood, California, USA.

It was very impressive performance from Marquez, as he showed that he was the better fighter than Alvarado in every way. Indeed, Marquez was so dominant that he had Alvarado afraid to pull the trigger on his punches for fear of being countered by him. Each time Alvarado would throw something, Marquez would sting him right back with hard counters to the head and body. Alvarado’s punches rarely landed in the fight, and the final punch stats bare that out. Alvarado landed 178 of 510 punches for a 35% connect percentage. Marquez landed 278 of 627 punches for 44%.
