angulo544By Eric Thomas: Junior middleweight contenders Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’s) and Erislandy Lara (17-1-2, 11 KO’s) will be facing each other in the co-feature on the Josesito Lopez vs. Marcos Maidana card on June 8th at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA, according to Gabriel Montoya.

This is a good fight. Lara, #1 WBC, #3 WBO, #5 IBF is coming off of a 9th round technical draw against Vanes Martirosyan last November in a fight that Lara appeared to win.

If the fight had gone the full 12 there’s no question that Lara would have won because he was really starting to dominate at the time of the stoppage in the 9th. The fight was halted due to Martirosyan suffering a cut over his left eye in the 9th round from an accidental head-butt.

Angulo, #9 WBC, looked less impressive in his last fight in beating welterweight Jorge Silva by a 10 round unanimous decision last December. Angulo looked shaken up a couple of times by the light hitting Silva when he was flurried on. Angulo was too slow to react to the flurries, and ended up taking a lot of head shots.

Angulo won his fight before that against Raul Casarez by a 1st round knockout. Angulo was destroyed by James Kirkland by a 6th round knockout in November 2011, which is why Golden Boy has put Angulo in with two soft touches in his last two fights. The Silva fight was supposed to be an easy one for Angulo, but he didn’t have the hand speed to deal with Silva.

Lara, 29, would seem to have all the advantages in this fight. He’s the much faster guy with better movement, and defensive skills. Lara should easily win as long as he doesn’t stand in front of Angulo and look to slug it out with him. Angulo does punch hard, so if Lara tries to slug with him he could get hurt.
