Mares KO’d by Gonzalez: Why the Featherweights are special

024(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Hector Gonzalez: Here is why Mares getting knocked out was special. Most boxing fans are accustomed to watching welterweights, middleweights and heavy weights. Some notable light weights, but in general very few people talk about featherweights. In my opinion, that’s where the real magic happens. For example, one of the best technicians in Nonito Donaire losses to an even better technician in Rigondeux. Undoubtably in the top 5 lists of technicians in boxing today, fighting one another.

Some of my favorite fights in the last 15 years have been in the featherweight divisions. Such trilogies (what other divisions are having trilogies?), Morales vs Barrera, Israel Vasquez vs Rafael Marquez, Pacquiao vs Morales. Even Gonzalez vs Vasquez was a great right. How about Juan Manuel Lopez vs Orlando Salido.

Mares will knock Gonzalez out by the 6th round, possibly earlier if he throws some body shots. Gonzalez can dish it out, but sure can’t take it.

The fight will be televised on SHOWTIME, along with another title fight matching WBC super bantamweight champion Victor Terrazas (37-2-1, 21 KO’s) defending his title against former IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14 KO’s) in the co-feature bout. This fight too has a predictable ending. Terrazas is going to get taken out at some point tonight by the bigger punching Santa Cruz.

Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Eusebio Osejo on February 23rd in Mexico

gonzalez33By Chris Williams: Former two division world champion Jhonny Gonzalez (52-8, 45 KO’s) will be facing journeyman Eusebio Osejo (21-12-2, 7 KO’s) on February 23rd in a scheduled 12 round bout in a still to be determined venue in Mexico.

Gonzalez, 31, lost his World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight title in his last bout against Daniel Ponce De Leon last year in September in an 8th round technical decision loss. The fight was stopped after Gonzalez suffered a bad cut over his right eye from a head-butt in the 8th.

De Leon was dominating the fight at the time and the bout went to the cards with De Leon winning by the scores of 79-72, 79-72 and 77-74.

De Leon is hoping to beat the 27-year-old Nicaraguan born Osejo and then getting a second shot at De Leon after that. However, Jhonny many get another title shot at the WBC featherweight belt, but it might not be against De Leon because he has a fight on March 2nd against the unbeaten knockout artist Jayson Velez (20-0, 15 KO’s), and it’s going to be really tough for De Leon to win that fight.
