Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Jorge Arce on October 4th

arce1By Dan Ambrose:
WBC featherweight champion Johnny Gonzalez (56-8, 47 KOs) will be defending his title against 35-year-old #10 WBC Jorge Arce (64-7-2, 49 KOs) in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico on October 4th. It’s a fight that will generate a lot of excitement in Mexico, but it’s very likely to be a huge mismatch due to Arce’s advanced age and with him fighting in a weight class that is not well suited to his small frame.

Arce has the frame of a light flyweight, but he’s moved up in weight over the years by packing muscle on his upper body at the expense of his twig-like legs.

Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Jorge Arce on September 20th

arce1By Dan Ambrose: WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (56-8, 47 KOs) will be defending his title on September 20th in what shapes up to be a title milking fight against 35-year-old former four division world champion Jorge Arce (64-7-2, 49 KOs) in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Arce isn’t ranked in the top 15 at featherweight, and he’s clearly way too small to be fighting in this division. Arce want’s to try and win a 5th division world title, but he’s picking the wrong guy to be trying to accomplish that goal against.

Broner and Matthysse in separate fights on September 6th, says Showtime’s Espinoza

broner`11By Dan Ambrose: It looks like you can forget about a fight between former three division world champion Adrien Broner (28-2, 22 KO’s) and light welterweight slugger/contender Lucas Matthysse (35-3, 33 KOs) for September 6th. Showtime vice president Stephen Espinosa says that the two fighters will be competing on the same card on September 6th, but not against each other.

The idea is to have Broner, Matthysse and WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez on the card, but with each of them facing other opponents. It’ll work if each of them are facing high quality opposition, but it doesn’t look like we’re going to be seeing that.

Jhonny Gonzalez defeats Clive Atwell

gonzalez66(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Jim Dower: WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (56-8, 48 KO’s) retained his WBC title tonight with a 10 round technical decision on Saturday night against #12 WBC Clive Atwell (12-1-1, 7 KO’s) at the Convention Center in Acapulco, Mexico. The referee stopped the bout after Gonzalez was cut over his left eye from a head-butt. The fight then went to the cards with Gonzalez, 32, winning by the scores of 99-89, 96-92 and 98-90.

Gonzalez dominated the entire fight with his hard power shots and stiff jab. Atwell was much too slow to get anything going with his offense in the fight and he ended up taking one-way punishment from the 1at round until it was finally stopped in the 10th. Atwell would fire back with his shots, but he was so slow that it made it easy for Gonzalez to get out of the way of his shots without getting hit.

Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Clive Atwell this Saturday, May 24th

gonzalez44By Dan Ambrose: WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KO’s) will be defending his title this Saturday night, May 24th, against little known Clive Atwell (12-0-1, 7 KO’s) at the Convention Center in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico. Gonzalez, 32, had been hoping to face Abner Mares in a rematch months ago, but Mares suffered a rib injury while training. Atwell, #12 WBC, is more of a stay busy fight than anything. He’s not someone who will give Gonzalez any real challenge because Atwell lack the speed, power, skills and experience to do much in this fight.

This fight likely won’t last more than a round or two unless Gonzalez takes it easy on Atwell. This is a mismatch in talent and a huge one at that.

Abner Mares with rib injury, rematch with Jhonny Gonzalez to be postponed

gonzalez44By Dan Ambrose: Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14 KO’s) has suffered a rib injury during training, and he won’t be able to make the February 15th rematch against WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KO’s). There’s still no date for when the fight can be rescheduled, and it might be a while before the 28-year-old Mares recovers from the injury.

That’s probably a good thing for him, because he was badly hurt in his 1st round knockout loss to Gonzalez last August, and the more time that goes by the better for Mares. But more than that, he needs to change his fighting style because he can’t go into a rematch against the hard hitting Gonzalez using the same aggressive fighting style that he used last time.
