Welterweights on the comeback trail

guerrero211By Gav Duthie: On the 21st June, 2014 California hosts the comeback fights of ex world champions Devon Alexander 25-2 (14) and forgotten Welterweight Robert ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero 31-2-1 (18). Although these two will share the same ring they won’t be fighting each other as they ease their way back to top level action on the undercard of Gary Russell Jnr 24-0 (14) v Vasyl Lomachenko 1-1 (1).

A fight between the two would have been of decent interest but its fair to say they both have stern challenges in front of them and can’t afford to be complacent. Devon takes on Jesus Soto Karass 28-9-3 (18) whilst The Ghost entertains  Yoshihiro Kamegai 24-1-1 (21). Devon is coming off a lost to Shawn Porter at the back end of last year whilst Guerrero has been out for 13 months since his loss to Floyd Mayweather. Its hard to say who has the bigger test here. Obviously statistically Kamegai looks better but Karass has been fighting top level fighters for quite some time now and surprised a few.

Robert Guerrero vs. Yoshihiro Kamegai & Devon Alexander vs. Jesus Soto Karass on 6/21 on Showtime

guerrero211By Dan Ambrose: The undercasrd of the June 21st fight between Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Gary Russell Jr. will have two fights that could wind up being far better fights than that one in welterweight Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) fighting slugger Yoshihiro Kamegai (24-1-1, 21 KO’s) and former two division world champion Devon Alexander (25-2, 14 KO’s) fighting Jesus Soto Karass (28-9-3, 18 KO’s) in a 50/50 fight on Showtime at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Guerrero has done nothing since his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year in May. Golden Boy Promotions were interested in matching Guerrero up with Keith Thurman, but he chose not to take that fight. They had other options for him in addition to Thurman, but Guerrero opted not to take any of those fights. He wanted a rematch against Mayweather, but Mayweather wasn’t interested in fighting him again due to their fight not being a competitive one. Their fight didn’t bring in huge pay-per-view numbers either.

Thurman’s win over Soto Karass not enough to get Maidana

thurmanBy Dan Ambrose: Interim WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (22-0, 20 KO’s) demolished #6 WBA Jesus Soto Karass (28-9-3, 18 KO’s) by a 9th round TKO last night at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. While it was a decent performance from Thurman, it probably wasn’t an impressive enough fight for him to get a title shot against newly crowned WBA champion Marcos Maidana yet.

Thurman was good, but he shaken up in the 1st round by the slow as molasses Soto Karass, and we don’t know what would have happened if he gone after Thurman to try and finish him off the way he should have.

Keith Thurman: Soto Karass is going down!

thurman56By Eric Thomas: Keith Thurman (21-0, 19 KO’s) is hoping to put in a good performance tonight to justify him being mentioned among the top names in the sport like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. Thurman, 25, will be defending his interim WBA 147 lb. title against an opponent that he feels isn’t in the same league as him in Jesus Soto Karass (28-8-3, 18 KO’s).

Thurman has to be able to beat this guy easily for him to be classified as being at the same level as a Mayweather, because this is someone that wouldn’t do well against a fighter as good as Floyd.

Keith Thurman v Jesus Soto Karass: Interim WBA World Welterweight Title

Thurman and Soto Karass(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Sevak Sarkisian: As most fight fans already know, Keith Thurman (21-0-19Ko’s) will be facing tuff Mexican veteran Jesus Sotto Karass (28-8-18Ko’s) this Saturday. The bout will be the co-future for the Broner v Maidana card in San Antonio Texas and will be televised live on Showtime.

Keith Thurman was originally viewed as an exciting big puncher, however he has proved over the course of his last few fights that he is much more than just a big puncher. Thurman possesses good boxing skills and knows how to use the ring well when he has to. He also has a high boxing I.Q and has shown that he can make adjustments in the middle of a fight. Thurman also possesses an offensive mentality and always brings a lot of tenacity into the ring each time he fights.

Keith Thurman: I’ll make sure Soto Karass goes to sleep real nice

Thurman and Soto Karass(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Eric Thomas: Unbeaten WBA interim welterweight champion Keith Thurman (21-0, 19 KO’s) sees his fight this Saturday night against Jesus Soto Karass (28-8-3, 18 KO’s) as a showcase fight for him to display his skills to fans across the United States in this Showtime televised fight at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

The 25-year-old Thurman’s fight won’t be the main event, as this isn’t as big as the feature bout between WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana. Thurman hopes to graduate into being a main event fighter soon. It might not happen until he picks up a big win over Broner and some of the other top fighters in the division, but Thurman is definitely on course to accomplish that if he can keep picking up big wins like his recent 10th round stoppage win over Diego Chaves in his last fight in July.

Keith Thurman targeting Adrien Broner in 2014

Keith Thurman(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Allan Fox: WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner might be on borrowed time as the WBA 147 lb. champion because the interim belt holder Keith Thurman (21-0, 19 KO’s) is focused on going after Broner’s title in 2014. As the interim champion, Thurman is poised to fight for Broner’s belt, and it’s going to make it interesting for Broner and for Golden Boy Promotions in 2014 to see what they do to avoid the fight.

Few people think Broner will actually fight Thurman due to his lack of size and power in the 147 lb. weight class, but it’s going to be interesting to see what Broner or Golden Boy comes up with in order to avoid that fight. You can’t make Broner the next Floyd Mayweather Jr. with him getting beaten by Keith Thurman.

Thurman sees Soto-Karass as stepping stone to Mayweather

thurman2332By Dan Ambrose: Interim WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (21-0, 19 KO’s) sees his December 14th clash against #10 WBA Jesus Soto Karass (28-8-3, 18 KO’s) as a building block to get him closer to a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer sees Mayweather-Thurman as the only fight to make for Thurman if he keeps winning.

The Thurman-Soto Karass fight will take place as the co-feature on the Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana Showtime televised card next month at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

Thurman said “Soto Karass is one of those stepping stones I need to pass to make my dreams come true [to fight Mayweather]. I can box. I can punch. I’m always looking for one punch. I love ending fights early. I’m ready to plant my feet and throw big punches.”

Prediction on Golden Boys future plans

broner999Golden Boy promotions last grand event “The One” didn’t live up to hype and the action didn’t play as we expected. Although others may have different opinions, that’s what I thought of the event. Golden Boy had yet to release news regarding their future events and they surprised me and I’m sure many hardcore boxing fans with 2 stacked cards for December of this year.

December 7th will be featuring a co main event that  gave me butterflies and is a fight I’ve been anticipating for months now. Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s Vs Erislandy Lara (18-1-2, 12 KO’s) for the WBA interim title.

Like many I was hoping that fight would have been put on “The One” rather than Carlos Molina vs Ishe Smith but what’s happened has happened. But that fight could be a fight of the year due to Trout and Lara’s slick style of fighting. And I was also amused by the twitter trash talk between the two.

Zab Judah to face Paulie Malignaggi on December 7th in New York

malig56By Allan Fox: Paulie Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO’s) will be facing Zab Judah (42-8, 29 KO’s) on December 7th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, according to Showtime’s Al Bernstein. On the undercard will be welterweights Keith Thurman vs. Jesus Soto Karass. There’s no word about Amir Khan battling Devon Alexander, so you have to assume that we won’t be seeing that fight any time soon.

Judah-Malignaggi pits too fighters coming off of losses and in need of a big win. Malignaggi lost his WBA title to Adrien Broner last June by a much disputed 12 round split decision in Brooklyn, New York. Judah lost to to WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia by a narrow 12 round unanimous decision last April.
