Remember why we love boxing

by Ronnie Jordan: Boxing politics is discussed and often furiously debated by fans in websites and forums. Often reading an article about the sport can feel like an extract from a scientific study or government dossier. You could be forgiven for losing interest with the, ever changing rules and regulations, different governing bodies, possible substance abuse, and drawn out financial negotiations being discussed before even mentioning the actual sport it self. This incessant drivel about controversial subjects may appeal to die hard fans but to the average follower it’s becoming increasingly boring.

Did UFC 118 finally answer which fighting style is superior? –MMA or Boxing?

By Leo Kapakos: The spectacle of former three-division boxing champion James Toney and five-time UFC champion Randy Couture squaring off in the Octagon on Saturday night proved nothing. The question of whether MMA or boxing is a superior combat sport is ridiculous at best. Anyone who understands combat sports knows the rules of competition will generally determine how a boxer fares against a mixed martial artist. This was proven on Saturday night when MMA legend Coture didn’t hesitate to take boxer James Toney to the ground and choke him out in a little over 3 minutes of the first round. Unfortunately for the 41 year old boxing great, with less than a year of MMA training he had no take-down defense and couldn’t get a shot off, his only chance.

Toney wants to fight Couture in boxing match

By Matt Stein: Now that James Toney has tried and miserably failed in his attempt to win a MMA match against 47-year-old Randy Couture in UFC 118, Toney would like for Couture to give him a chance to return the favor by taking him on in the boxing ring rather than another MMA match.

Did Toney hurt the sport of boxing with his fight agaisnt grappler Couture?

By Matt Stein: James Toney did not give a good account of himself in his foray into the MMA world with his 1st round tap out loss to 47-year-old Randy Couture last Saturday night in UFC 118. I don’t know if the 42-year-old Toney is aware of this or even cares, but he may have actually helped the MMA to attract more boxing fans to their sport with this fight rather than the other way around. This fight was hugely successful in terms of pay per view sales compared to past UFC events and you have to figure that the reason for this was because of boxing fans purchasing it to see a match-up between a boxer and a MMA star.

Did Toney make suckers out of fans who paid to watch his fight against Couture?

By Francisco Hernandez: August 29, 2010: James Toney’s nom de guerre “Lights Out” has now changed to “Con-Man” Toney. This is because last night Toney pulled one of the biggest con jobs of the decade in taking on and losing to one of MMA’s biggest stars in Randy Couture in UFC 118. No one in his right mind would pay a cent to watch Toney, not even if he was pitted against an alligator. Yet Toney has managed to con close to a million dollars from MMA fans. The irony of this great con is that such a huge purse is beyond most renowned MMA fighter’s earnings. It is incredible that an old, overweight, has been boxer, shadow of a fighter, can earn so much money in MMA, more money than most MMA stars can ever hope to make. James Toney is laughing all the way to the bank.

James Toney Vs Randy Couture: Legends of Different Disciplines

By Rhodri Kilcoynea: On August 28th two ageing, but extraordinarily talented fighters are being pitted against one another in what UFC President Dana White envisions as ‘UFC vs Boxing’. This kind of all encompassing title threatens to damage the reputation of one of these subsequent sports when the winner is decided at the TD Garden in Boston. But let us not fool ourselves here, even the most obsessive MMA and Boxing fanatics have come to concede the individual merit that both these disciplines deserve. In saying this, as a writer for a boxing news website I must defend the sport I cherish the most, and argue the case for why a dinky, rotund and punch drunk boxer of 42 years of age will defeat a legend at his own game.
