Donaire-Arce likely to be a massacre, but Rigondeaux vs. Poonsawat will be a good fight

Image: Donaire-Arce likely to be a massacre, but Rigondeaux vs. Poonsawat will be a good fightBy Chris Williams: The December 15th fight between WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) and Jorge Arce (61-6-2, 46 KO’s) will likely be massacre with Donaire destroying the undersized, fading Arce at the Toyota Center, in Houston, Texas, USA.

However, Top Rank has done a good job of at least putting one good fight on the card with WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) facing Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym (48-2, 33 KO’s) in a fight that could be competitive.

Rigondeaux better off with Poonsawat as opponent than Drian Francisco

Image: Rigondeaux better off with Poonsawat as opponent than Drian FranciscoBy Chris Williams: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) and his team at Top Rank made the right decision to fight former WBA super bantamweight champion Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym (48-2, 33 KO’s) on December 15th rather than little known Filipino Drian Francisco (23-1-1, 18 KO’s) at the Toyota Center, in Houston, Texas, USA.

Before Rigondeaux lined up his fight with the 31-year-old Poonsawat, his team was considering using the 29-year-old Francisco. That wouldn’t have been a good fight because Francisco is pretty limited and was recently beaten by Tepparith Kokietgym just last year. I rate Poonsawat as a much better fighter than Kokietgym, and Francisco was easily handled by Kokietgym.

Rigondeaux vs. Poonsawat on Donaire-Arce undercard on 12/15

Image: Rigondeaux vs. Poonsawat on Donaire-Arce undercard on 12/15By Dan Ambrose: Dan Rafael is reporting that a deal is done between WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and 31-year-old former WBA Super Bantamweight Champion Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym (48-2, 33 KO’s) for December 15th on the undercard of the HBO televised fight between WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire and Jorge Arce at the Toyota Center, in Houston, Texas, USA.

The Rigondeaux-Poosawat fight was the one that Top Rank, the promoters for the 32-year-old Rigondeaux, had wanted to make. Then recently Filipino Drian Francisco had been mentioned as possibly fighting Rigondeaux, but now it’s back to Poonsawat. This is a much better fight because Poonsawat is a pretty talented fighter and is ranked #3 by the World Boxing Association at 122.

Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Drian Francisco possible for 12/15

Image: Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Drian Francisco possible for 12/15By Chris Williams: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) could be facing former interim WBA super flyweight champion Drian Francisco (23-1-1, 18 KO’s) on the undercard of the Nonito Donaire vs. Jorge Arce card on December 15th, according to Philboxing.com. Rigondeaux had been mentioned as possibly defending his title against Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym but it looks like Rigondeaux’s promoter Bob Arum prefers to match Rigondeaux up with the Filipino Francisco for the Donaire-Arce card.

It kind of makes sense because the Donaire vs. Arce card will have a ton of Filipinos tuning in to see it and it makes sense to match Rigondeaux up with a Filipino or a Mexican fighter since those are the nationalities of the two fighters in the main event.

Arce vs. Donaire official for 12/15; Rigondeaux-Poonsawat possible for undercard

Image: Arce vs. Donaire official for 12/15; Rigondeaux-Poonsawat possible for undercardBy Chris Williams: Dan Rafael is reporting on his twitter that the December 15th fight between WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) and little 5’4″ Jorge Arce (61-6-2, 46 KO’s) is now official. The fight, which is one of Donaire’s typical mismatches, will take place at the Toyota Center, in Houston, Texas, USA.

It looks like Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is staging it in Texas in order to take advantage of the large Mexican community over there. Arce definitely has more potential to bring in huge numbers of fans to fill an arena than does Donaire at this point in Donaire’s career. Arce a popular fighter in Mexico, whereas Donaire is still pretty much limited to a certain segment of the U.S.

Rigondeaux to fight on Donaire-Arce undercard on December 15th

Image: Rigondeaux to fight on Donaire-Arce undercard on December 15thBy Chris Williams: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) may be having little luck in getting a fight against WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire despite being with the same promotional company Top Rank, but Rigondeaux will at least have the opportunity to fight on the undercard of Donaire’s mismatch against Jorge Arce on December 15th at a still to be determined venue, according to Dan Rafael.

He says that Bob Arum of Top Rank said he’s in the process of finalizing the Arce-Donaire fight and that Rigondeaux will be on the undercard. This will be a good thing if Arum finds Rigondeaux a good opponent that’s well known.

Rigondeaux: Donaire showed that he’s afraid of me last Saturday

Image: Rigondeaux: Donaire showed that he's afraid of me last SaturdayBy Chris Williams: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux believes that WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) exposed himself last Saturday night when he was being interviewed by HBO’s Max Kellerman, who asked Donaire why he won’t fight Rigondeaux.

Donaire basically said that Rigondeaux needed to show him more for him to be excited about fighting him. Donaire inferred that Rigondeaux needs more experience at the pro level.

Garcia: Rigondeaux has to earn his way to a shot against Donaire

Image: Garcia: Rigondeaux has to earn his way to a shot against DonaireBy Dan Ambrose: Robert Garcia, the trainer for IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s), doesn’t believe that WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) has earned his way to a unification bout against Donaire due to the level of competition he’s been facing thus far.

Garcia said to Chris Robinson at CRHarmony “I have no doubt that Nonito Donaire can beat Rigondeaux; it could even be an easy fight. But he [Rigondeaux] can’t win the spot by beating someone like [Robert] Marroquin. He’s got to win the spot by beating names like Nonito has been doing.”

Donaire: Rigondeaux needs more experience for me to fight him

Image: Donaire: Rigondeaux needs more experience for me to fight himBy Chris Williams: IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) pretty much told the boxing world last night that he’s not going to be fighting WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux any time soon, if ever, after Donaire defeated a faded 36-year-old Toshiaki Nishioka (39-5-3, 24 KO’s) by a 9th round TKO at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California.

Nishioka was the fighter that Donaire had been saying was the best super bantamweight in the division, and after the fight Donaire was sticking to that believe despite Nishioka only averaging a little over 20 punches thrown per round in a textbook example of a fighter not really trying to win.

Rigondeaux extends contract with Top Rank

Image: Rigondeaux extends contract with Top RankBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) has reportedly extended his contract with Top Rank, which had previously run out recently. According to RingTV, the 32-year-old Rigondeaux has signed a multi-fight deal with Top Rank. It’s unclear how long the contract is or if it’s just for three fights.

Golden Boy Promotions supposedly offered a bigger deal with for Rigondeaux in terms of money, but for some reason Rigondeaux opted to stay with Top Rank. It’s likely that he resigned because of the potential to get a big money fight against IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, who is easily the biggest money maker in the super bantamweight division.
