Image: Donaire-Arce likely to be a massacre, but Rigondeaux vs. Poonsawat will be a good fightBy Chris Williams: The December 15th fight between WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) and Jorge Arce (61-6-2, 46 KO’s) will likely be massacre with Donaire destroying the undersized, fading Arce at the Toyota Center, in Houston, Texas, USA.

However, Top Rank has done a good job of at least putting one good fight on the card with WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KO’s) facing Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym (48-2, 33 KO’s) in a fight that could be competitive.

Tickets for the Arce-Donaire fight go on sale today and are prices as follows: $200, $60 and $30. The Toyota Center has a seating capacity of nearly 18,000 and I can’t see it selling out or even getting close to selling out. Donaire doesn’t have a huge fan base in the Houston area, and I don’t think Arce will be able to pull in significant numbers of boxing fans. Arce is popular in Mexico but he’s not on the level of someone like Saul Alvarez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Arce’s not going to be able to attract a ton of fans and neither will Mike Lee, Rigondeaux or Poonsawat.

I don’t really understand the venue all that much. Bob Arum is better off moving the fight to Mexico or the Las Vegas area because it’s not going to draw big numbers unless he starts stacking the card with Mexican fighters. Given that the Rigondeaux-Poosawat fight is bring marked as the co-main event, I don’t see that happening.

Rigondeaux is someone that could be an interesting opponent for Donaire if Arum would put that fight together. However, there’s still no plans for that fight to be made and I’ll be surprised if Arum makes it in 2013. Rigondeaux has to get past Poonsawat because this guy is very tough and he could potentially beat Rigondeaux. I rate Poonsawat as a much better fighter than Arce is at this point. Arce is more of a flyweight/super flyweight fighting out of his division and he’s going to get destroyed easily by Donaire. Arce’s boxing don’t realize how overmatched he is in this fight and they’ll tune and end up disappointed.

Also on the card will be undefeated light heavyweight prospect Mike Lee facing a still to be determined opponent.
