Rigondeaux: Donaire showed that he’s afraid of me last Saturday

Image: Rigondeaux: Donaire showed that he's afraid of me last SaturdayBy Chris Williams: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux believes that WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) exposed himself last Saturday night when he was being interviewed by HBO’s Max Kellerman, who asked Donaire why he won’t fight Rigondeaux.

Donaire basically said that Rigondeaux needed to show him more for him to be excited about fighting him. Donaire inferred that Rigondeaux needs more experience at the pro level.

Rigondeaux had this to say about Donaire at thaboxingvoice.com “when Max Kellerman asked him about fighting me. I’m not exciting and I have more to do? I’ve knocked out my last three of my last four opponents…You could see on television he was scared and the whole world saw it. He says he wants all the belts but he doesn’t want to fight me?”

Well, it sure does look like Donaire isn’t all that interested in fighting Rigondeaux. What’s sad about all this is that Donaire is saying he’ll move up in weight soon if he can’t get any important fights, yet he’s ruling out one of the biggest fights in the division for him in Rigondeaux by saying he’s not excited about that fight and that he needs to show him something more.

If you’re saying that you’ll be moving up in weight if you can’t get the big fights you want in the near future while at the same time dismissing one of the top three fighters in the division in Rigondeaux, then what does that say about you? Does Donaire want the biggest fights in the division or is just interested in the biggest money fights in the division?

If he’s talking about the biggest money fights, then he needs to pay Jorge Arce what he’s asking and then go after WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares after that. However, judging by the comments that Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum made recently about wanting to set up a fight between Donaire and Mares next year if Mares’ contract with Golden Boy expires, it doesn’t look like Donaire will be fighting Mares either. In that case, there’s only Arce and perhaps Vic Darchinyan left. A Donaire-Darchinyan fight would be bigger than a Donaire-Rigondeaux fight, but it probably wouldn’t be that much bigger. Darchinyan isn’t a champion any longer and he’s starting to really get up there in age.

I think Rigondeaux is out of luck as far as Donaire fight goes. He’s obviously not going to fight him, and will probably be moved up to featherweight in early 2013 to go after one of the paper champions. I see Donaire not fighting the best guy in featherweight division in WBO champion Orlando Salido, just like he’s not fighting Rigondeaux.
