Will Froch face Golovkin if Chavez Jr isn’t available?

golovkin2By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch recently was given bad news by the promoter of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr when he said in an interview that there won’t be a fight between Froch and Chavez Jr in early 2015.

Chavez Jr’s promoter, Bob Arum, isn’t against the fight taking place, but it would be a fight that would be promoted by Arum’s company Top Rank, as it would be the last fight on Chavez Jr’s contract with the company.

Sanchez sees Golovkin stopping both Cotto and Canelo

golovkin4(Photo credit: Abel Sanchez) By Dan Ambrose: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for unbeaten WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) knocking out both WBC champ Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if he winds up facing one or both of them in the near future.

Right now, there’s a possibility that the winner of Cotto’s next fight will opt to vacate the WBC middleweight title rather than face Golovkin and possibly get annihilated. Sanchez suspects that the Cotto-Canelo winner may end up vacating the title rather than risking their hide against Golovkin.

Sanchez says that Canelo has shown no interest in wanting to fight Golovkin in the past. As for Canelo, Sanchez sees it coming down to Canelo’s promoter Oscar Dela Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions. If De La Hoya doesn’t feel that the 24-year-old Canelo is ready to face Golovkin, then that fight probably won’t happen unless Canelo is willing to overrule De La Hoya.

Cotto’s adviser says Bradley a bigger fight than Golovkin

bradley68By Dan Ambrose: In a hint that WBA 160lb champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) may have a hard time getting a fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) in the near future, Cotto’s adviser Gaby Penagaricano is saying that Tim Bradley (31-1-1, 12 KOs) is a bigger fight for Cotto than Golovkin is.

If the fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez falls through, then guys like Floyd Mayweather Jr or Bradley could be the next in line for Cotto. Penagaricano didn’t say whether Cotto will opt to vacate his WBC title rather than face Golovkin in the near future, but that’s definitely something may wind up happening.

Quillin: Golovkin is a high risk low reward opponent

quillin53By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) pretty much ruled out a fight against WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin at least for now.

Quillin says that Golovkin is a high risk fight without much of a reward at this time. Quillin says if he were to fight him he’d be doing it for the fans, and he feels like it’s not worth it to fight him just so that he can tell the fans he beat him.

It’s interesting that Quillin doesn’t think of the Golovkin fight in terms of what it would do for his career. Quillin doesn’t seem to understand that if he beat Golovkin, it would help make a bigger star and that in turn would lead to him making more money.

Martin Murray needs a steel chin to survive against Golovkin

golovkin456(Photo credit: Abel Sanchez) By Scott Gilfoid: Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) is ranked high by the WBA and WBC boxing organizations, but he’s going to need more than an inflated ranking in order to survive the full 12 rounds against WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) on February 21st at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Since Murray, #1 WBC, #5 WBA, doesn’t have much power to speak of, it means that he’s going to be forced to go the full 12 rounds if he wants to beat Golovkin. The only way Murray can beat Golovkin is by out-boxing him over the course of the fight and win by a 12 round decision.

Golovkin not interested in Andre Ward fight, wants PPV match against Chavez Jr

golovkin63By Allan Fox: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) ruled out the idea of him moving up to super middleweight to face the bigger Andre Ward in a fight between unbeaten champs.

Golovkin doesn’t see any point in him moving up to face Ward. Golovkin says if he does move up to the 168 pound division, he’ll be doing it to face a pay-per-view fighter like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a PPV fight rather than Ward in a fight that would obviously not be worthy of PPV.

Golovkin beats Cotto by KO, says Anthony Dirrell

cotto552By Dan Ambrose: WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell is picking WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin to beat WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto by knockout if the two fighters end up facing each other in 2015.

That’s a big if because Cotto will likely face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next, and that could prove to be one step too far for the 34-year-old Cotto. He’s won his last two fights against Delvin Rodriguez and Sergio Martinez, but we’re talking about two fighters that have seen their best days already in the ring.

Boxingnews24.com’s 2014 Fighter of the Year – Gennady Golovkin

golovkin5623By Dan Ambrose: Boxingnews24.com has selected WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) as the Fighter of The Year for 2014.

We realize that ESPN selected Terence Crawford as Fighter of The Year for his wins over Ricky Burns, Raymundo Beltran and Yuriorkis Gamboa, but only one of those fights was entertaining and that was largely due to Gamboa, not Crawford pushing the fight. Crawford’s wins over Beltran and Burns were incredibly boring to watch, and it was like watching paint dry. For that reason, we couldn’t give Crawford Fighter of the Year. His performances were simply too boring.

Golovkin waiting on Cotto-Canelo fight

golovkin7356By Dan Ambrose: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin says he’s waiting to get a fight for the WBC 160 pound title against either Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Golovkin is ready to fight either of those guys unless they opt to vacate the WBC title.

The Cotto-Canelo fight could take place on May 2nd unless there’s a problem with the negotiations that keeps the fight from getting made in the first half of 2015. If that’s the case, then we could see Cotto take an optional title defense instead while he waits on the Canelo fight.

De La Hoya: Keith Thurman is better than Golovkin

golovkin888By Jim Dower: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya believes that his fighter interim WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (24-0, 21 KOs) is a better fighter than WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs).

De La Hoya believes this because Golovkin doesn’t choose to move around the ring constantly the way that Thurman does when he fights. De La Hoya says that Golovkin can’t fight going backwards the way that Thurman does.
