How is Golovkin struggling to be rated?

golovkin994By James P Sexton: Gennady Golovkin was a relatively unknown name when he knocked out Milton Nunez in the first round to win the WBA interim World Middleweight Title. Back then he was only 6 into his now 18 streak of straight knockout victories. However, today he is an easy pick for anyone discussing exciting fighters in the sport.

A short while ago I posted an article relating to the pound for pound picture and I listed GGG as the fifth best fighter on the planet regardless of weight, and after reading through the comments and discussing the listings with some friends, this was generally accepted.

Expect Golovkin to attack Martin Murray to the body

golovkin14By Scott Gilfoid: If you’ve had the chance to watch any of Martin Murray’s past fights the thing that immediately jumps out at you is the way he uses a high guard almost at all times to protect his head.

Murray has this guard that picks off most of the incoming fire from his opponents when they’re head-hunting a lot like former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez did in his win over Murray in 2013.

For the fighters who have failed to adapt to Murray’s high guard, they’ve had problems with him. He’s obviously been very fortunate to not have had to face any guys that actually throw body shots like the ones he’ll be seeing on February 21st.

ESPN Update Their P4P Rankings

pac645By James P Sexton: On January 5th ESPN tweeted out a link to their newly updated pound for pound rankings. Several positions will not produce any surprise such as Floyd Mayweather Jr remaining at the top as number 1, however several of the other choices may receive some criticism after a close analysis of the fighters recent performances.

Manny Pacquiao was listed at number 2 and whilst I personally would not have him here, its a solid pick and cannot really be questioned. The questionable picks start from the number 3 slot.

Golovkin willing to wait for fights against Cotto or Canelo if he has to

golovkin99999By Dan Ambrose: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is willing to sit and wait to get a shot against Miguel Cotto, the WBC middleweight champion, or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Golovkin may have to wait an awfully long time to get a fight against one or both of them if the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight winds up vacating their WBC title rather than facing Golovkin.

Chavez Jr sees Froch and Golovkin fights possible for 2015

chavez012By Dan Ambrose: Despite being in limbo due to promotional problems with Top Rank, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) believes he’s not only going to fight IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch this year but also Gennady Golovkin.

Chavez Jr wants both fights. His promoter Bob Arum though says that the Froch fight won’t happen. Arum is happy to make the fight but it would be under Top Rank, and that’s something that Chavez Jr may or may not be willing to do.

Is Froch starting to show interest in Golovkin fight?

froch9993By Scott Gilfoid: Last night, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya sent out a tweet to Carl Froch among others saying that he’s spotted flaws in the highly popular knockout artist Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) that he thinks Froch can take advantage of if he faces him.

What’s interesting about this is that Froch chose to retweet De La Hoya’s comment on Golovkin. Now why would Froch make a move like this?

Froch may need to fight Golovkin to get Las Vegas fight

golovkin00(Photo credit: Abel Sanchez:) By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) has talked repeatedly about wanting to see his name under the bright lights of Las Vegas, Nevada before he retires from boxing.

Froch was hoping that the opponent he could face in Vegas would be Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who Froch was under the impression was someone that he could fight on pay-per-view in the United States. But now with Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum saying he’s still under contract with him for one more fight, it doesn’t look like Froch is going to get the opportunity to face the Mexican star.

Who will be the next set of PPV/P4P stars in a post Mayweather/Pacquiao era?

golovkin94By James P Sexton: What do Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny Pacquaio, Bernard Hopkins, Wladimir Klitschko, Sergio Martinez, Miguel Cotto and Carl Froch have in common?

They are all great champions. They are all have hall of fame credentials. However, the point I am making here is that none of them have more than a few more years, some a few more fights left in them.

It is a reality that sooner rather than later that the best fighters of this era will retire, and when they do, who will stand in to replace them as pound for pound and pay per view kings of the sport?

Froch stuck between a rock and a hard place after IBF orders DeGale fight

froch81By Scott Gilfoid: Last Friday, IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) was given word that the IBF had ordered him to begin negotiations with his IBF mandatory challenger James DeGale (20-1, 14 KOs) for a fight that would likely take place in the spring.

DeGale is a slick fighter in the Andre Dirrell mode, but without the hand speed, power, foot movement and defensive skills that Dirrell possesses. DeGale is obviously a very tough fight for a slower, aging fighter like the 37-year-old Froch, and it’s very likely that Froch will choose to vacate his IBF title rather than defend it against DeGale and risk getting beaten and ending his career on a loss rather than a win.

Golovkin’s trainer hopes Cotto-Canelo winner honors WBC ruling

golovkin7744By Jim Dower: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez is hoping that the winner of the proposed fight between WBC 160lb champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will follow the ruling by the WBC that the winner of the fight must fight Golovkin, who is the WBC interim middleweight champion.

If they decide not to face Golovkin, then the World Boxing Council will likely strip the Cotto-Canelo winner of their WBC title, and this would mean that Golovkin would fight for the vacant WBC title against likely David Lemieux. It would still be a good fight, but not nearly as interesting as Golovkin fighting Canelo or Cotto.
