By Gav Duthie: With the year drawing to a close I ask who was the king of the ring for 2014? It has been far from a blockbuster calendar year but it has seen some great performances, some new blood start to make a name for themselves and some solid comebacks. Based on level of performances, ring activity and the quality of opponents these are my 6 of the best.
6. Gennady Golovkin 31-0 (28) – The train keeps rolling through
With a lack of top class fights available at middleweight Golovkin’s philosophy is to remain active. Despite postponing dates in the early part of he year due to a family bereavement GGG has fought three times in 2014. He started the campaign with a much expected win over the durable Osumano Adamo in 7 rounds. Towards the second half of the campaign the Kazakhstan sensation faced two opponents that were said to be stern tests which he passed with ease.
Gennady Golovkin held a Press Conference on Saturday, November 22nd in Astana, Kazakhstan as part of an International Press Tour leading up to his World Middleweight Championship against MARTIN MURRAY slated for Saturday, February 21st in Monte Carlo.
By Jesse James: Abel Sanchez, the head trainer of WBA “Super” and WBC interim Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, believes Canelo Alvarez will fight Golovkin if he beats Cotto. Sanchez believes Cotto will not fight Golovkin if he wins. Canelo has stated multiple times he will fight Golovkin and isn’t afraid, even Oscar De la Hoya stated that Canelo is indeed interested and that fight is a possibility next year.
By Diarmuid Sherry: Anyone who has mattered at 168lbs, Andre Ward has beaten. Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham, Sakio Bika and recent challenger Edwin Rodriguez were all outfoxed by the superior Ward. Former Light Heavyweight Champion, Chad Dawson found that dropping the 7lbs to fight at Super Middleweight too difficult to cope with, and lost to a rare Ward knockout.
By Allan Fox: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr doesn’t want his son WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) to face WBA Super middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs), because he sees Golovkin as having too much size on him for Mayweather Jr to fight him.
By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is saying that former WBA/WBC 154 pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) is interested in facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, and that he’s not afraid of fighting him. De La Hoya says that the red-haired Canelo isn’t afraid of fighting anyone.
by Oliver Norager – IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) faces the durable, but limited Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) on the 21 of February in Monte Carlo. This is actually a decent fight for the hard punching Golovkin. Murray is a decent operator with a tight defense, so getting Murray out of his misery early will prove something to the public, because neither Felix Sturm or Sergio Martinez were able to get him out of there, but they don’t have the power that Golovkin has.
By Scott Gilfoid: WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) will be back in action in the next four months against former two time world title challenger Martin Murray (29-1-1, 12 KOs) on February 21st in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
