Froch needs to prove he’s “too big & too strong” for Golovkin

froch67777By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) has been flapping his gums off and on in the past month about being interested potentially in facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs). However, when Golovkin and his promoter Tom Loeffler attempted to get the fight put together, they were met with silence from Froch.

In the recent past, Froch said that he going to make a decision in the first week of June whether he would return to the ring or not. Well, it’s not the first week of July, and Froch hasn’t said a word about whether he’ll be returning to fight or not.

Froch: I’m “Too big & too strong for GGG”

froch332By Scott Gilfoid: Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) might be starting to show some interest in facing the talented WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) after all. Earlier on Saturday, Froch sent a Tweet out saying that he’s “Too big & too strong for GGG.” It showed undated photo of Froch in front of some weights. We have no way of knowing when the photo of Froch was taken.

For all we know, Froch took the photo a couple of years ago when he was fighting on a regular basis and was still in shape. Froch looked a lot thinner than the pudgy-looking Froch I saw not too long ago on Sky. Froch looked like he had added weight to his jowls from being out of the ring for so long, but the Froch in this Tweet looks like he’s in fighting shape.

Is Lemieux being saved for Canelo by Golden Boy?

lemieux665By Dan Ambrose: After David Lemieux’s recent 12 round decision win over Hassan N’Dam (31-2, 18 KOs) to capture the vacant IBF middleweight title on June 20th last month, Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya ruled out any chance of Lemieux immediately fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in a unification fight.

De La Hoya’s reasoning for dismissing the fight was because Lemieux had a mandatory defense due for his newly won IBF title. In other words, the IBF wouldn’t allow Lemieux to face Golovkin even if he wanted to.

Golovkin with few options for next fight

golovkin444By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) looks to be in a bad position for his next fight in terms of opposition. He’s not going to get David Lemieux, Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Andy Lee, Andre Ward, Daniel Jacobs, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Tim Bradley or Carl Froch. With the IBF ordering Tureano Johnson to fight Eamonn O’Kane in an IBF eliminator bout to pick out the mandatory for Lemieux, Golovkin now no longer has the option of fighting Johnson as well.

This means that Golovkin’s next opponent will likely be one of the lower hanging fruit in the WBA’s ranking.

Malignaggi: Why can’t Golovkin move up just one weight class to fight Andre Ward?

malignaggi44By Dan Ambrose: Showtime commentator Paulie Malignaggi thinks it’s unreasonable for WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. to defend his titles at 154 in a fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), who has volunteered to move down to 154 to fight Mayweather.

Malignaggi says that Mayweather started his career at 130, and has moved up in weight five weight classes to win titles in each weight class from super featherweight to junior middleweight. Malignaggi feels that instead of Mayweather having to defend his junior middleweight titles against Golovkin at 154, Golovkin should instead move up in weight to 168 to fight WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward.

Golovkin’s promoter: We never asked Froch for a catch-weight, we’re clear at 168

By Scott Gilfoid: In response to the report from ESPN earlier today about WBA middleweight Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) making demands to Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) about a catch-weight if they were to fight, Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler took to Twitter to refute those claims by saying that they’re were asking for a catch-weight. They were and still are willing to fight the 37-year-old Froch at the full 168lb weight for the fight, and they’re willing to take the fight in the UK.

Froch leaning in direction of DeGale rather than Golovkin for comeback

froch0002By Scott Gilfoid: After an entire month of thinking about whether to make a comeback or not, former IBF/WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) still isn’t any closer to resuming his career than he was before. However, Froch, 37, is saying that if he makes a comeback, he would be leaning in the direction of facing IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale rather than the unbeaten WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

If DeGale were to agree to a purse split that Froch was happy with, and if he felt that it would sellout Wembley Stadium in London, UK, then he might take the fight with him. But Froch has his doubts whether DeGale would come in at the right price.

Half time report – Boxing in 2015 so far

golovkin64By Gav Duthie: The first six months of 2015 have went past in the blink of an eye but it has been action packed in the world of boxing.

The year previous had been somewhat disappointing with many potential fights passing us by and lots of controversial decisions. For me 2015 has started brighter despite the this era’s fight of the century (Mayweather v Pacquaio) failing to ignite. Lets look so far at my personal highlights and debate the results as well as looking onto to the back end of the year.

Cotto won’t vacate his WBC title after Canelo fight to avoid Golovkin

cotto00000By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) plans on keeping his WBC 160lb title after his next defense against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) in November rather than vacating it to avoid his No.1 WBC mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), according to Roc Nation Sports COO David Iskowitch.

He told Fight News that they will look to make sure Cotto keeps his WBC title after the Canelo fight. Just what that means is unclear. Cotto was supposed to be fighting Golovkin next, but both the WBC and Golovkin agreed to let the Cotto-Canelo fight take place as long as Golovkin gets the next shot at the title.

Bradley: I’ll fight Golovkin if my team wants me to

bradley555555By Dan Ambrose: WBO interim welterweight champion Tim Bradley (32-1-1, 12 KOs) says he’ll face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) next if that’s a fight that his team wants. Bradley, 31, says he’s not the one who makes the decision for his fights.

It’s a team effort involving his trainer Joel Diaz, his father, and of course his promoter Bob Arum. It’s unclear what Diaz and his father want for Bradley next, but it’s clear that Arum is very interested in Bradley facing Golovkin this year in September because he feels that it’s a fight that could be shown on pay-per-view.
