1-GolovkinLemieux_Hoganphotos1By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum wants IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) to move up in weight to 168 and fight his fighter #1 WBO, #2 WBA, #2 WBC, #3 IBF Gilberto Ramirez (32-0, 24 KOs) in 2016 if Ramirez wins his next fight against Gevorg Khatchikian (23-1, 11 KOs) on November 20th, and then beats the winner of the November 21st fight between WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham and #15 WBO Martin Murray.

Arum says that Ramirez will challenge the winner of the Abraham-Murray fight in March or April 2016.

Roach questions whether Golovkin is well known enough for Cotto

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach doesn’t seem to be all that enthused with the idea Cotto fighting IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

Roach questions whether Golovkin is well known enough for him to be worthwhile as an opponent for the 35-year-old Cotto. Roach says that Golovkin’s low pay-per-view numbers for his recent fight against David Lemieux is an example of him not being a pay-per-view worthy opponent. Roach also says that his fighter Manny Pacquiao didn’t have any idea who Golovkin was when he came over to the Wildcard Gym to visit him and Pacquiao and post for photos.

Golovkin: No chance I’ll fight at 155 for Canelo

Image: Golovkin: No chance I’ll fight at 155 for CaneloBy Dan Ambrose: Two weeks after former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) drew a line in the sand in terms of telling IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) that he’ll have to fight him at a catch-weight of 155 pounds if he wants to face him in the near future, Golovkin has answered back by saying there’s no way he’s going to fight the 25-year-old Canelo at a catch-weight of 155, 156 or 158.

If Canelo wants the fight with him, he’ll have to fight him at the full weight of 160lbs for the middleweight division. Golovkin says he would only go down in weight to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Roach wants Mayweather for Cotto, not Golovkin

cotto (10)By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach says he prefers a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. after the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) fight on November 21st rather than a unification fight against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs).

Roach says Golovkin isn’t a big name right now, and he’s not a pay-per-view draw like he needs to be in order for a fight between him and Cotto to be a big fight. Roach thinks that Golovkin will be a good fight for Cotto at some point in the future, but not right now.

Nigel Benn: Eubank Jr. should stay away Golovkin

eubank777By Scott Gilfoid: Former world champion Nigel Benn doesn’t think it’s a good idea at all for the 26-year-old #1 WBA Chris Eubank Jr. (20-1, 15 KOs) to challenge IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) right now because he feels that he’s not ready for an advanced fighter like him.

Benn thinks that Eubank Jr still needs to learn his trade before he takes on an experienced fighter like Golovkin. Benn notes that Eubank Jr. was beaten by Billy Joe Saunders just last year in November 2014. Benn figures that if Eubank Jr. couldn’t even beat a guy like Saunders, who he doesn’t feel is in the same class as Golovkin, then he doesn’t see him as being able to compete against a talented fighter like Golovkin.

Atlas: Golovkin has to agree with whatever Canelo asks of him

CANELO ÁLVAREZ media day workoutBy Chris Williams: If IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) wants a big money fight against Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) in 2016, then Golovkin will need to agree to the 155lb catch-weight that Canelo wants him to agree to in order for him to get the fight, says trainer/ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas.

Canelo is the one who brings in the pay-per-view buys and he’s the much bigger star than the Kazakhstan native Golovkin, so he can ask for anything he wants. It won’t bother Canelo if Golovkin says ‘no’ to his request for a 155lb catch-weight because Canelo will be fine if he never fights Golovkin.

Golovkin should call Canelo’s bluff and agree to fight him at 155

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: For boxing fans interested in knowing when IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) and his promoter Tom Loeffler will be making a decision about when to fight again, they’ll need to sit tight for a while and wait until the smoke clears from next months’ fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul Canelo Alvarez.

Golovkin wants the fight next, but he could be hit with a huge obstacle and getting the fight with the 25-year-old Mexican fighter. Canelo says only fight Golovkin at a catch-weight of 155lbs. It’s unknown how serious Canelo was when he said he’d fighting Golovkin at that weight.

Canelo says he’s ready for Golovkin

1-cotto-canelo-m (9)By Dan Ambrose: Two years have gone by since former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) lost his two 154lb titles to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in losing by a 12 round decision in September 2013, and since then, Canelo has beaten Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara and James Kirkland.

Lara was a top fighter, whereas Angulo and Kirkland were seen as aging and inactive guys from yesterday. Canelo, 25, says he’s improved from the Mayweather loss and has picked up more experience.

cotto (7)By Allan Fox: David Itskowitch of Roc Nation Sports, says that it’s up to WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez who they want to fight, when asked if the winner of their November 21st fight should face IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in their next fight.

Itskowitch thinks that a rematch between Cotto and Canelo would be something that they would have to seriously look at it if brings in a lot of business on HBO pay-per-view.

Golovkin should forget about Cotto and Canelo

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: Judging by some of the comments made recently by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, it looks like he has no interest at all in facing IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto seems be showing little interest in facing Golovkin as well. That’s why I think it’s best for Golovkin, his trainer Abel Sanchez and promoter Tom Loeffler to assume that the winner of the Cotto vs. Canelo fight on November 21st will soon after be vacating the WBC 160lb title rather than facing Golovkin.
