Itskowitch talks Cotto-Canelo rematch possibility

cotto (7)By Allan Fox: David Itskowitch of Roc Nation Sports, says that it’s up to WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez who they want to fight, when asked if the winner of their November 21st fight should face IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in their next fight.

Itskowitch thinks that a rematch between Cotto and Canelo would be something that they would have to seriously look at it if brings in a lot of business on HBO pay-per-view.

It seems that Golovkin’s recent fight against IBF David Lemieux could work against him getting Cotto due to the fight failing to bring in a lot of pay-per-view buys on HBO. The Golovkin-Lemieux fight brought in only 150,000 PPV buys. That’s not a lot buys, and it’s roughly half the amount of buys that Cotto and Canelo have been bringing in with they’ve been the A-side in fights against the likes of Sergio Martinez and Alfredo Angulo.

“It’s up to each fighter to determine who they want to fight. Not to belittle what business was done last weekend, but if the reports are accurate, and you’re Miguel or Canelo faced with the prospect of fighting Golovkin and having it doing X or facing who you just fought again and doing an amazing amount of business and in a rematch of a great fight that everyone is clamoring for, there’s a decision that has to be made,” Itskowitch said to Fightnews.com.

It’s not surprising what Itskowitch says bout a rematch between Cotto and Canelo, because it wouldn’t make sense for either of them to face Golovkin because they don’t have the right kind of fighting styles to win that fight. It would be better off for Cotto and Canelo to keep fighting each other over and over again until they get diminishing returns with the boxing public eventually losing interest in seeing their fights.

Without fighting each other, Canelo and Cotto would be faced with the prospects of fighting welterweights or possibly guys like Andy Lee. It’s doubtful that Cotto or Canelo would take a risky fight against Daniel Jacobs, Peter Quillin or Golovkin. It’s also unlikely that Cotto and Canelo would look to face the best junior middleweights like Demetrius Andrade, Jermall Charlo or Erislandy Lara.

Canelo already fought Lara and beat him by a questionable decision. The fight was so close that we’re likely not going to see Canelo ever take a risky fight like that again. So what we’re probably looking at once Canelo and Cotto wind up facing each other two or three times is that they’ll wind up facing welterweights once again like they used to do.

I think Cotto might retire rather than go that route, because he would be taking such a big pay cut unless he could face someone like Kell Brook. For his part, Canelo could wind up battling the winner of the Tim Bradley vs. Brandon Rios at some point.

As for Golovkin, I think we’re not going to see him getting a fight against Canelo until he’s up there in age. I don’t see Cotto taking that fight before he retires. He’s probably not even in the equation, even though he’s only one year older than the 33-year-old Golovkin.
