stevenson455By Jim Dower: 35-year-old former WBA 175 pound champion Gabriel Campillo (24-6-1, 11 KOs) is a possibility for WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson’s next title defense on September 27th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, according to RingTV.

Campillo is coming off of a big win over previously unbeaten contender Thomas Williams Jr last Friday night. Campillo was able to take some monstrous shots from Williams Jr in the first 4 rounds to get a cut stoppage in the 5th.

Williams Jr, an amazing talent with incredible punching power, was dominating the fight for the first 3 rounds. But the fight changed in the 4th round when he suffered a bad cut over his left eye. The blood leaked into Williams Jr’s eye, making it impossible for him to see. After the 5th round the fight was stopped on the advice of the ringside doctor.

The fight, which is scheduled for 10 rounds, will bring Dirrell out of his hibernation mode to where he’ll be looking to fight on a frequent basis in going after one or more of the world titles. Biosse is just the first stop for Dirrell, as he wants to go after the big names in the 168 pound division to show what he can do against those types of fighters.

Fonfara stops Campillo; Szpilka defeats Mollo

mollo1By Jim Dower: Polish light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (24-2, 14 KO’s) stopped former WBA World light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (22-6-1, 9 KO’s) in the 9th round on Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Field, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Fonfara dropped a tired and hurt Campillo in the 9th with a right hand. Referee Genaro Rodriguez then halted the round at 1:37 of the round when it was clear that Campillo was too hurt to continue.

Fonfara, #4 WBO, #4 IBF, #7 WBC, staggered Campillo in the 8th round with a right to the jaw late in the round. Campillo never saw the punch coming, and he was badly hurt. However, the round ended before Fonfara could attempt to finish Campillo off.

Campillo, 33, lost by a 12 round split decision to Cloud last month on February 18th by the scores 115-111 for Capillo, and 116-110 and 114-112 for Cloud.
