By Jim Dower: According to Fight News, the World Boxing Association is going to review last Friday night’s bout between WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (19-3, 6 KO’s) and Beibut Shumenov (9-1, 6 KO’s), a fight which ended with the 26-year-old Shumenov winning by a deeply controversial 12 round split decision at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The outcome of the bout hasn’t been well received by many boxing fans and writers alike, who saw Campillo winning by a significant margin. I saw the fight myself, and felt that Campillo won by at least four to five rounds at the least.

Shumenov win over Campillo wasn’t that controversial
By Dave Lahr: I honestly don’t know what all the crying and bellyaching is about with the Beibut Shumenov (9-1, 6 KO’s) 12 round split decision win over World Boxing Association light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (19-3, 6 KO’s) on Friday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. I had Shumenov winning by a round or two. Shumenov landed the much harder shots all the way through it and was the busier fighter during most of the first six rounds of the fight.
Shumenov did clearly faded in the last six rounds of the fight, but I still had him winning two of the last six rounds, which was more than enough to squeeze out a 12 round decision. That’s not to say that Shumenov looked good, because I thought he looked horrible. Shumenov has no stamina whatsoever, fights in a robotic, mechanical way, has little hand speed and like I said, his stamina is plain awful.

By Jason Kim: The hype for light heavyweight contender Beibut Shumenov (8-1, 6 KO’s) was bound to end sooner or later. Tonight, Shumenov was defeated by the light-hitting World Boxing Association light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (19-2, 6 KO’s) in a 12-round unanimous decision at the Sport Complex “Daulet”, in Astana, Kazakhstan. The final judge’s scores were 114-112, 114-112 and 114-113, all for Campillo.

By Jason Kim: World Boxing Association light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (18-2, 6 KOs) will be fighting undefeated contender Beibut Shumenov (8-0, 6 KOs) on August 15th at a still to be determined location in Kazakhstan. Shumenov, 25, fought for Kazakhstan in the 2004 Olympics, and has quickly risen up in the rankings since turning pro in 2007. Campillo, 30, recently defeated WBA light heavyweight champion Hugo Hernan Garay by a 12 round majority decision last month in June to capture the title.
