By Kurt Jean: Boxing is called the sweet science. It is a science, an art, a way of life and a philosophy. It is a martial art that imparts benefits to its practitioners at different layers of their being and characters. In martial arts and life , there is ever but one opponent and one opponent only. That opponent remains you, yourself. The goal is to ultimately defeat yourself, your fears, your insecurities and limitations. That practice happens at numerous levels. Some master the body, some the mind, on occasions, both. Some partially break down the barriers of fear. The goal is to use boxing to access the unlimited potential and wisdom latent in every human being. Some realize this truth , others fail short .

The episode will highlight the buildup to their interesting fight on September 12th on Showtime pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Part of the episode will show Mayweather showing off his versatility in playing Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas in a game of basketball. What was surprising in watching the game was how good Mayweather is. He was competitive with Thomas, and this isn’t even Mayweather’s No.1 sport. Thomas had to bring his A-game for him to beat Mayweather. He wasn’t slacking off at all against him.

Kenny Bayless to work Mayweather-Berto fight

Image: Kenny Bayless to work Mayweather-Berto fightBy Allan Fox: Kenny Bayless will be working as the referee for the September 12th fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. For Bayless, this will be the 7th time that he’s worked one of Mayweather’s fights during his long 19-year pro career.

With this fight being such a one-sided fight in terms of boxing skills, it really doesn’t matter who the referee is. This isn’t a fight where Mayweather has to be concerned about who the referee is working the fight because he’s got all the advantages against the 31-year-old Berto.

Ellerbe: We [Mayweather] don’t worry about PPV numbers, that’s your jobs

Floyd Mayweather and Andre BertoBy Chris Williams: Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe let the press known on Wednesday that they’re not worried about what the pay-per-view numbers are for Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight against Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) on September 12th. Ellerbe says that it’s the media’s job to worry about the PPV numbers.

Mayweather has taken a lot of flak for choosing the highly accomplished 31-year-old Berto for his next fight instead of someone that the media wanted him to fight. But Mayweather remarked that even if he had selected someone else, it still wouldn’t have made everyone happy. The media would still have taken a shot at him regardless.

My Two Cents: Guzman, Wilder, Broner, Mayweather retirement

broner6677By Gav Duthie: After being inactive for a little while on the writing front and a lack of top level boxing recently I thought I would give my thoughts on a few of the recent boxing stories in the press.

Joan Guzman retires

The wasted talent of Joan Guzman can only be blamed on one man, himself. The man from the Dominican Republic missed weight several times, failed drug tests and was extremely inactive through his career. Nevertheless I feel a sadness towards any boxer with unfulfilled potential.

Floyd Sr: I believe Mayweather Jr. will continue to fight after Berto

floyd6666By Chris Williams: Trainer/father Floyd Mayweather Sr. believes his son WBA/WBC 147lb champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) will continue to fight after he gets past challenger Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) on September 12th. Floyd Sr. doesn’t say why he thinks Mayweather Jr. will continue his career, but it could have something to do with the interesting fights that he’ll have on the horizon such as rematches against Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Manny Pacquiao.

Those are all fights that would make a lot of money for Mayweather, but also it would help expand his already great legacy in the sport. Beating those fighters twice would cement the opinion that Mayweather is “The Best Ever” in the minds of a lot of boxing fans.

Mayweather sees Berto and Khan as being the same

floyd300By Scott Gilfoid: During Wednesday’s media workout, WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) came to the defense of Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs), who he’ll be facing on September 12th, by saying that he doesn’t see any difference between him and Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs).

Mayweather says both Berto and Khan have three losses on their resume, and both of them have previously captured two world title belts during their careers. Khan has been pushing for a fight against Mayweather in a big way in telling the media members that he has the talent to beat Mayweather and he deserves the fight.

De La Hoya says 2.5 million fans won’t see boxing again after Mayweather-Pacquiao fight

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao last May turned off 2.5 million new boxing fans, who he feels will never come back to watch another boxing event due to De La Hoya believing that the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight failed to provide the action and excitement that it was originally billed as potentially supplying. For De La Hoya, it obviously hits him hard if the casual fans don’t come back to watch future pay-per-view fights, because he promotes a lot of fights, and it will be bad if the fan don’t come back.

“Pacquiao-Mayweather didn’t live up to expectations whatsoever,” De La Hoya said to Fighthype.com. “You had 2.5 million people, new customers, disappointed. They wanted to see a fight, and now these are never going to want to see boxing again because of that fight. So that’s what I have a problem with. Now I’m speaking as a promoter. I love fights. I love action. I want to see an action fight. That’s what I’m going to see on November 21st [with Canelo vs. Cotto],” De La Hoya said.

Ronda Rousey says she makes more money per second than Mayweather

rousey3By Jim Dower: After being dismissed by Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently when he told her to come look him up when she starts making $300 million per fight like he made against Manny Pacquiao, UFC woman’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has fired back with a comment about how she thinks she makes more money per second than Mayweather makes for his fights.

In overall pay, Mayweather likely makes more money than the 28-year-old Rousey, but her fights have been lasting only one round lately due to the lack of quality for her to fight. Rousey isn’t facing opposition with a massive amount of experience, and the result is she’s stopping them quickly in less than one round.

Canelo: I have learned from the Mayweather fight

canelo91(Photo credit: Gene Blevins – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: 25-year-old former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) says he’s learned from his loss that he sustained against unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) from two years ago in 2013, and he plans on using the things that he learned from that defeat in his fight against WBC middleweight belt holder Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) on November 21st.

However, if Canelo has learned anything from that fight, we certainly haven’t seen it any of his fights since then, because he looks just as vulnerable now as he did back then. The only real difference that I can see is Canelo hasn’t faced a quality opponent in the last couple of years and this has enabled him to keep winning.
