Miguel Cotto = Fernando Vargas?

cotto576368.jpgBy Tom Hanson: I’m not sure if I’m the only one that noticed this or not, but I couldn’t help but see the close similarities of Miguel Cotto (32-1, 26 KOs) and former welterweight star Fernando Vargas earlier in his career. I’m not referring to the fat and bloated Vargas at the end of his boxing career when he was struggling badly to make weight for fights. I’m talking about when Vargas was at the top of his game, the young undefeated then 20-0 phenom that fought Felix Trinidad in December 2000. At the time, Vargas was just as good a fighter as Cotto, maybe even better since he had already proven himself with wins over Winky Wright, Ike Quartey, Raul Marquez, Ross Thompson and a young Yory Boy Campas.

In contrast, before losing in a crushing 10th stoppage to Margarito on July 26th, Cotto has struggled to defeat Shane Mosley, running in the last three rounds to eke out a win, and also had problems in defeating Zab Judah, DeMarcus Corley and Ricardo Torres. Vargas, for his part, had no problems beating all of his opponents up until his fight with Trinidad in 2000, and showed superb speed, boxing ability and power to go with his good size at 5’10”. If you were to want to put together a welterweight champion, Vargas would be the mold that you would be looking for. He could move, slug and had excellent hand speed. Indeed, in every facet of his game he was a superior fighter than Cotto has shown to be.

Vargas Announces Retirement From Boxing

Minutes after Saturday’s bout in which he lost by majority decision to Ricardo Mayorga, Fernando Vargas (26-5, 22 KOs) announced his retirement from boxing after a 10 year career. Though only 29 years-old – relatively young in terms of boxing years – Vargas was a shell of his former excellence, having lost his final three bouts. As Mayorga showed in pounding out a decision victory, Vargas no longer had the had speed, power or ring movement to compete at the high standard he had been accustomed to earlier in his career when he was a light middleweight champion.

Mayorga Decisions Vargas

Former light middleweight/welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga pulled out a majority decision over boxing great Fernando Vargas last night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Vargas, 29, was knocked down in down in the 1st and 11th rounds, costing him the fight ultimately. The final judges’ scores were 114-112, 115-111 and 113-113, awarding the decision to Mayorga. In the first round, Mayorga came out on fire, flurrying and tagging Vargas with numerous shots to the head, many of them connecting to the back of Vargas’ head. In the last portion of the round, Mayorga overwhelmed Vargas, who was covering up for dear life, and droped him to the canvas.

Mayorga Vargas: Will The Weight Loss Effect Fernando?

vargas357533.jpgIf this bout had taken place in 2000, before Fernando Vargas (26-4, 22 KOs) had been stopped by Felix Trinidad in a war, I’d easily pick Fernando to defeat tonight’s opponent Ricardo Mayorga (28-6-1, 23 KOs). However, the 29 year-old Vargas isn’t nearly the same fighter he was then, having lost much of his quickness along with stamina and youth. Though he’s not even 30, and relatively young in years, he’s like a fighter in his late 30s, ready for retirement.

Some of the wear and tear is just the natural course of aging, while others are due to the damage from having fought fierce battles with Oscar De La Hoya, Trinidad, Ike Quartey, Winky Wright and Shane Mosely, to name just a few. That’s not counting all his other fights as well as all the head shots he’s no doubt taken in the amateurs and while training for bouts. However, what I’ve left out, though, is Vargas’ tendency to balloon up in weight, often over 200 lbs, between fights. That’s a massive amount of weight for Vargas to take off each time he needs to fight. In the past, when he was fighting as a junior middleweight, he’d have to take off more than 50 lbs just to make weight.

Vargas Mayorga: Will Fernando Continue Fighting If He Wins?

Former two-time light middleweight champion Fernando Vargas (26-4, 22 KOs) is supposedly fighting for the last time on Saturday night against former welterweight/light middleweight champion Ricardo Mayorga (28-6-1, 23 KOs) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. However, there are many fans out there, including myself, who question whether the 29 year-old Vargas will, in fact, retire should he defeat the 34 year-old Mayorga. To be exact, Vargas appears to be retiring not because he wants to, but rather because he’s no longer winning like was earlier in his career. Indeed, he’s lost his last two fights, both of them to Shane Mosley.

Vargas Mayorga on Saturday Night

Former welterweight/light middleweight champion Fernando Vargas (26-4, 22 KOs) will go up against former welterweight/light middleweight champion Ricardo Mayorga (28-6-1, 23 KOs) on Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Both fighters, unfortunately, are well past their prime, having dealt with weight issues (among other things) for the past few years. Both are coming off losses where they were stopped and looked bad during the process. Strangely enough, the bout is going to be PPV, although I’m curious who – aside from a diehard boxing fa – would want to pay to see a bout between these two fighters.
