Davis-Walsh & Brook-Spence: Hope or Hype?

Image: Davis-Walsh & Brook-Spence: Hope or Hype?

By Gav Duthie: One boxing name has popped up a couple of times in articles this week that I had not thought of in a while, Jeff Lacy. ‘Left Hook’ Lacy last fought in 2015 finishing with a modest boxing record of 27-6 (18). In 2006 however he was ‘The next big thing’. He was 21-0 (17) and heading over to the UK to smash the overconfident, over-hyped and overrated Joe Calzaghe, or so we were told. Lacy was a big favorite much like Gervonta Davis (v Liam Walsh) and Errol Spence Jne (v Kell Brook). Calzaghe dominated Lacy over 12 rounds and the great hope was never the same since. Frank Warren has compared the Davis situation to this

By Scott Gilfoid: In 8 days from now, Errol Spence Jr. will be fighting IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook for his IBF 147 pound strap with referee Howard John Foster the third man in the ring on the night on May 27. This could be a good thing or a bad thing for this fight. It all depends on what kind of night Foster is having. Foster was a tad quick on the stoppage of the first Carl Froch vs. George Groves fight on November 23, 2013.

Despite taking off a ton of weight, Brook still has 6 stubborn pounds to get down to the limit.

Image: Brook vs. Spence = 2 weeks away

By Scott Gilfoid: In less than 2 weeks from now, IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) will be putting his IBF strap on the line against his mandatory challenger Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (21-0, 18 KOs) in a very big fight on May 27 at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, England. On May 27, we’re going to find out quickly if there’s any residual damage to Brook’s surgically repaired right eye from his last fight against Gennady Golovkin. If the titanium plate that was inserted into Brook’s right eye socket isn’t as strong as he’s been blathering about, we could see that eye swell up almost immediately when Spence nails on that spot.

Da Hoya is really high on the talent of the 27-year-old American Spence, and he sees him as too good for Brook. De La Hoya sees Spence obliterating Brook on the night when the two of them go at it at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, England.
