Deontay Wilder not interested in vacating WBC title

1-deontay-wilder (16)By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it doesn’t look like WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) plans on giving up his WBC title anytime soon. Despite many boxing fans believing that the 6’7” talent will be giving up his WBC title if his management lose the purse bid for his fight against his mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs), Deontay says that’s something he doesn’t want to do.

Deontay isn’t ruling it out though, but he says it’s definitely something that he doesn’t want to do. You can’t blame Deontay if he does vacate though. If his management loses the purse bid, then it would surely mean that he would need to fight Povetkin in his home country of Russia.

Deontay Wilder vs. Alexander Povetkin to go to purse bids

1-deontay-wilder (11)By Scott Gilfoid: The negotiations between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) and his mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) have failed to produce a scheduled fight like they had hoped for. Povetkin, 36, says that they have failed. As such, it will now go to purse bids. The purse bid will be taking place next week on February 26.

“Talks failed, there will be trade negotiations,” Povetkin told TASS earlier today.
This is a negative if it goes to a purse bid because this increases the chance that the fight could take place in Russia. If one of the wealthy Russian promoters decides he wants to stage the Wilder-Povetkin fight, then it’s quite possible he’ll put in such a huge bid that Wilder’s management won’t be able to compete with it.

Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder and the Heavyweight Divisional Mayhem

Image: Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder and the Heavyweight Divisional MayhemBy Nedu Obi: With Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder at the helm—the heavyweight division is in utter disarray; pure mayhem—you gotta Love it though. Not since the times of Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis et al., has the class of concussive-hitters been the talk of the town.

For years now, save for the cruiserweight and light heavyweight divisions, every other division below has held sway over the art termed the Sweet Science, whilst the once eminent heavyweight division more or less, languished in obscurity; riding shotgun . Then out of the blue, I mean, this is really some out of the blue business we’re talking about here, they’re back with a vengeance—ready to set their mark and enforce it.

Thurman talks Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury

thurman44By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman says he’s not sure who will prevail when/if the big heavyweight champions Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) and WBC talent Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) meet up in a unification fight in the future.

While Thurman is very familiar with Deontay after having seen him fight on a number of occasions, he hasn’t seen enough of the 6’9” Fury to given an accurate appraisal of whether he can get rid of Wilder in a fight. What Thurman can say is Fury wasn’t all that special in his close 12 round decision win over 39-year-old Wladimir Klitschko last November in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Wilder and Fury could meet up in either late 2016 or some point in 2017 if they win their next fights. Fury has a rematch against Wladimir that he needs to take care of. Deontay has a mandatory defense due against his #1 WBC challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) that could take place within two to five months.

Charles Martin would have taken Deontay Wilder fight if not for commitments

Image: Charles Martin would have taken Deontay Wilder fight if not for commitmentsBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (23-0-1, 21 KOs) will be defending his title on foreign soil on April 9 against British fighter Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, England.

It’s somewhat of a disappointment to some that the talented 6’5” Martin is choosing to travel to the UK to fight Joshua in his own country in front of his own British fans. This could prove to be a big mistake if the fight goes to the scorecards because it’s possible that Martin could find himself on the wrong end of a hometown decision.

Deontay Wilder vs. Alexander Povetkin possible for May 21

1-deontay-wilder (8)By Scott Gilfoid: A working date of May 21 is the possible date for the huge fight between the talented 6’7” WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) and #1 WBC mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs). Deontay had been talking recently of wanting to get the fight against Povetkin over with by April, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

However, May 21 is still a good date for the fight. At least it won’t get dragged out until the summer months like the Wladimir Klitschko vs. Tyson Fury rematch, which unbelievably still doesn’t have a date or a venue after all this time.

Deontay: Fury has to get Klitschko out of the way first

Image: Deontay: Fury has to get Klitschko out of the way firstBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder doesn’t want to assume anything about him getting a unification fight against Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) for the time being because he says Fury still has to take care of business against former world champion Wladimir Klitschko in a rematch.

Before Wilder can even think about getting inside the ring to trade shots with Fury, he’s going to need to take a wait and see approach about Fury’s fight against Wladimir this year. Never the less, when/if Wilder does get the fight against Fury, he says he’s going to blast him out within four rounds.

David Haye trashes Tyson Fury

haye6444By Scott Gilfoid: David Haye has been vocal lately in saying that Tyson Fury will easily beat the 39-year-old Wladimir Klitschko in their rematch this year. Haye’s comments about Fury doing a better job against Wladimir in the rematch could be construed by some to mean that Haye is on good terms with the 6’9” Fury.

That would be the furthest thing from the truth though. Haye doesn’t seem to care too much for Fury, and he doesn’t respect how he openly has commented that he doesn’t want to fight him or WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. To Haye, he sees Fury’s reluctance to fight him and Wilder as an indication of what kind of person he is.

Tyson Fury wants Wladimir Klitschko rematch to happen as soon as possible

Image: Tyson Fury wants Wladimir Klitschko rematch to happen as soon as possibleBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten and untested IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) is in a real hurray to get his rematch with former undisputed heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) out of the way as soon as possible so that he can move on to bigger and better things like a unification match against the talented WBC champion Deontay Wilder.

Fury sees the Deontay fight as the biggest fight in the heavyweight division in the past 100 years, and he can’t wait to get the fight to take place. The thing is Fury wants both the Klitschko and Deontay fight to be staged in the UK, and that would seem to be a non-starter.

Povetkin too short for Deontay Wilder

povetkin100By Scott Gilfoid: I believe too much is being made of #1 WBC heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) being a threat to WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs).

Povetkin, 36, is Wilder’s mandatory after beating a timid looking Mike Perez last year in May 2015. Ever since Povetkin locked himself in as the mandatory challenger for Wilder, boxing fans have been saying that he’s going to KO Wilder and take his WBC strap. I don’t believe that for a second. I think this is going to be one of Wilder’s easier defenses, even easier than his victory over Johann Duhaupas last year in September.

Wilder says he wants to face Povetkin in April. The negotiations are currently underway between the management of the two fighters. I’m not sure that the fight will take place as early as April, but I can definitely see it taking place in May or June.
