Mijares vs. Cermeno this Saturday

By Dave Lahr: Former World Boxing Association/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (36-5-2, 15 KOs) will be fighting a rematch this Saturday night against Venezuelan Nehomar Cermeno (17-0, 10 KO’s) in a 12-round bout for the interim WBA bantamweight title at the Arena Monterrey, Monterrey, in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Mijares, 27, lost a 12 round split decision to Cermeno in March 2009, in a fight that I had Mijares winning quite easily by at least four rounds.

Mijares Given Raw Deal In Loss To Cermeno

mijares35442By Manuel Perez: I’ve never been much of a fan of former WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (36-5-2, 15 KOs), but I got to say he really got a raw deal in losing a 12-round split decision to unbeaten Nehomar Cermeno (17-0, 10 KOs) on Saturday night for the interim WBA bantamweight title at the Auditorio Centenario, Torreon, in Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico.

Darchinyan Stops Mijares

mijares43434.jpgBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (36-4-2, 15 KOs) was no match for IBF super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs) who dropped him twice en route to stopping him in the 9th round of a unification bout at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California. Darchinyan, 32, using power punching an a surprising speed advantage, knocked Mijares down with a devastating left uppercut at the end of the 1st round. Mijares got up and survived the round, which ended shortly thereafter, luckily for him.

However, Mijares never seemed to recover from the shot as he would continue to have huge problems with the power, speed and the unorthodox fighting style of the Armenian Darchinyan. In the 9th round, Darchinyan again hurt Mijares, hitting him with a flurry of shots, and then putting him down with two left hands to the head. The fight was then stopped by referee Lou Moret.

Mijares Defeats Munoz By Split Decision

mijares4635223.jpgBy Manuel Perez: WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (35-3-2, 14 KOs) added another title to his collection when he defeated WBA super flyweight champion Alexander Munoz (32-3, 27 KOs) by a 12-round split decision to win his WBA super flyweight title at the Auditorio Centenario, Gomez Palacio, in Durango, Mexico, on Saturday night. The final judges’ scores were 116-111, 116-112, for Mijares and 113-115 for Munoz. I personally had Munoz winning the fight by a substantial margin, giving Mijares only three of the rounds.

This was by far the worst I’d seen Mijares fight; He rarely threw punches during most of the rounds, as he consumed most of his time by trying to duck punches and fend off the attack of the aggressive Munoz. It wasn’t until late in the fight when Munoz tired out somewhat that Mijares finally began to let his hands go. Even then, Munoz continued to outwork by a substantial margin and make the fight interesting. Mijares was mostly limited to his jab, which he threw seldom and missed often, and a small amount of counter shots. He looked really fresh in the end compared to Munoz, 29, but then again Mijares had been doing little offensively for most of the fight, allowing Munoz to be the one to fight hard.

Boxing News: Hatton-Lazcano, Mijares-Munoz, Guzman-Campbell

In stark contrast to the circulating stories of an illness during training camp, which turned out to be nothing more than a fleeting minor virus, IBO/Ring Light Welterweight World Champion Ricky Hatton extended an open invitation to the British press yesterday to witness a rigorous display of his healthful condition. There has been no denial from Team Hatton that Ricky picked up a virus for a short period, but he was so far advanced in his training that he was already preparing to cut back.

Mijares Decisions Navarro

By Adan Cortez: World Boxing Council super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (34-3-2, 14 KOs) successfully defended his super flyweight title on Saturday night with a 12-round slit decision over challenger Jose Navarro (26-4, 12 KOs) at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ranked # 10 in the WBC super flyweight division, Navarro, 26, came into the fight having lost his last bout to Dimitri Kirilov, so it seemed odd that he would be the champion Mijares’ opponent for this bout.
