A tiny glance at the fights coming up . Part 1

March 2013. For those of you that are unaware, and for those that care, (for those that are unaware and wouldn’t care, this is not aimed at you), we are literally (oop) spoilt for fights in the coming weeks/months. Multiple angles could be used to sell and promote these fights, such as they are, both internationally and domestically, so equal in stature.

Lee Selby the latest Matchroom Sport addition

selby45By Scott Gilfoid: British and Commonwealth featherweight champion Lee Selby (14-1, 5 KO’s) is the latest addition to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport stable. The announcement is expected to be made tomorrow by Hearn, and following that Selby will be fighting on April 20th on the Brian Rose vs. Joachim Alcine card against an opponent still to be determined at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, Lancashire, United Kingdom.

Hearn’s Matchroom stable has really expanded lately with the addition of George Groves and Ricky Burns. Selby isn’t in their class, and this is definitely a much, much smaller deal than Hearn’s recent acquisitions. However, Selby a decent fighter and he may possibly snatch the European featherweight title next with a little luck. However, that’s kind of the end of the line for Selby.

Golden Boy Promotions interested in Ricky Burns?

burns02By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions has reportedly made a play to add WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) to their stable. Golden Boy already promotes the popular but struggling UK fighter Amir Khan, and if they can add Burns to their stable it would be a big deal for them in theory.

Burns left his promoter Frank Warren this week after having two fights cancelled a third fight, a unification bout against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez, postponed.

Golden Boy isn’t alone in trying to land the 29-year-old Burns to their promotional stable. There are two other promoters trying to get him Burns in the UK.

Abril defeats Bogere; Russell Jr. decisions Gusev

001AbrilvsBogereIMG_6674(Photo credit: Casino/Showtime) By Jim Dower: WBA World lightweight champion Richard Abril (18-3-1, 8 KO’s) defeated the physical Sharif Bogere (23-1, 15 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The final judges’ scores were 115-111, 116-110, 116-110. Abril lost 1 point for holding in the 8th. Bogere had a point deducted in the 12th for leading with his head.

Bogere led with head throughout the fight, and constantly banged heads with Abril. In response to the constant head-butts, Abril grabbed Bogere constantly to pull down on his head or clinch whenever he would come within range. After losing a point in the 8th for holding, Abril really turned up the heat by tagging Bogere at will. Abril controlled the action for the remainder of the fight.

50 Cent needs to beef up his promotional stable with new talent

50centBy Allan Fox: Last night, promoter 50 Cent saw his only champion in his stable IBF featherweight champion Billy Dib lose his title to challenger Evgeny Gradovich by a 12 round split decision at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

Hopefully, 50 Cent isn’t kidding himself about how one of the judges ruled the fight in Dib’s favor by a 114-112 score because Dib deserved to lose on all three cards, and you can make a good that he lost every round from the 3rd round.

50 Cent needs to start scouting out new guys to add to his SMS Promotional stable because the current guys that he has may not be the answer. 50 Cent has super middleweight Andre Dirrell, Dib, and Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Boxers fight for money

By Robert Elmore: After watching The Bright Lights and Dark Shadows of a Champion; The story of Sugar Ray Robinson, my perspective changed on the theory of “fighters fight just for the fans”. Robinson was a diva; and did not step into the ring if his money wasn’t right. Promoters didn’t know whether Ray was going to fight until he got into the ring. He demanded a cut of the film rights, closed circuit, ticket sales, the gate money, and most important the bigger half of the purse. And this was before he was even champion.

Abril vs. Bogere this Saturday night on March 2nd at the Hard Rock Café in Las Vegas

1284By Eric Thomas: Richard Abril (17-3, 8 KOs) was on the losing end of a highly controversial decision in his fight last year against Brandon Rios in April, 2012. The loss really bothered Abril because he felt he should won the fight easily, and a lot of boxing fans agree with him.

Abril can put that loss behind him this Saturday night in his fight against unbeaten Sharif Bogere (23-0, 15 KO’s) in their battle for the vacant WBA World lightweight title at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas.

Give me a shot!

By Naheem Yacub: Adil “Platinum KID” Anwar, despite being messed around at Echo Arena especially after David Price lost, prevailed as the ref stopped the contest in the 6th round due to a really bad cut Adil gave his opponent Lance Sheehan to his left eye. This resulted in the decision being given in Adils favour, thus bringing back the Light-welter Weight British Masters Title back to Leeds.
