By Scott Gilfoid: #15 WBC heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte (16-1, 13 KOs) is hoping to get a rematch against British heavyweight Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) in order to try to avenge a loss from last December.
Whyte suffered a left shoulder injury early in the Joshua fight that required recent surgery. Whyte is now planning on fighting in May or June, and wants to face either Dereck Chisora or Lucas Browne. After that, Whyte says he’d like to face Joshua next December in a rematch.
By Scott Gilfoid: British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) came close to being knocked out in the 2nd round of his grudge match fight against Dillian Whyte (16-1, 13 KOs) last December in London, UK.
If not for Whyte suffering a shoulder injury and gassing out, Joshua would have surely been beaten for the first time in his career. It was a stroke of luck that Whyte injured his shoulder and faded almost immediately, because those two things normally don’t’ occur in pairs in fights like they did last December.
By Scott Gilfoid: Dillian Whyte (16-1, 13 KOs) tasted defeat for the first time in his young career last December when he was stopped in the 7th round by unbeaten Commonwealth heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, UK.
Whyte says his left shoulder tightened up on him in the 2nd round, and he was exhausted. There were several things that Whyte took from the fight. First off, he noticed Joshua was very slow. He does not have great hand speed in Whyte’s mind.
By Scott Gilfoid: Barry Hearn is hoping that IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury stays unbeaten until next year so that he can match his fighter Anthony Joshua against him in a fight in the summer of 2017.
Hearn believes that the fight between the two tall British heavyweights would be a huge fight if the two of them could stay unbeaten that long. Hearn thinks that Joshua, 26, will be a heavyweight world champion by the end of 2016.
By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) had better keep an eye out for unbeaten New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker (17-0, 15 KOs), because the 23-year-old fighter is very interested in getting in the ring with Joshua in the future and testing his power shots out on the Brit’s chin.
While Parker admires the opportunities that Joshua has for big fights in the UK, he doesn’t lack for confidence to want to get inside the ring with the 6’6” Joshua so that he can try bouncing some of his power shots off his chin. Parker obviously saw how Joshua was recently hurt in the 2nd round of his last fight against Dillian Whyte in December.
By Scott Gilfoid: Former two division world champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KOs) figures that he’s at least two fights away from a potential clash against unbeaten British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs).
Haye thinks the fight is possible in 2016 against Joshua if they both win their next two fights, but he’s not sure if Joshua will go after a world title soon. Joshua could try and fight the winner of the Charles Martin vs. Vyacheslav Glazkov fight for the IBF heavyweight title. Joshua is also ranked #2 by the WBC.
By Scott Gilfoid: It does not seem to have hurt British Dereck Chisora (24-5, 16 KOs) that he was recently stopped by Tyson Fury a year ago by a 10th round stoppage.
Chisora, 32, has rebuilt his career with four straight wins over fodder opposition and he’s now in the position to pretty much take his pick for nice paying fights against the likes of EBU heavyweight champion Robert Helenius (22-0, 13 KOs), British/Commonwealth strap holder Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) and the recently beaten Dillian Whyte (16-1, 13 KOs).
By Scott Gilfoid: After seeing British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs) temporarily wobbled by Dillian Whyte (16-1, 13 KOs) earlier this month on December 12, Sky Sports analyst Carl Froch now thinks that Joshua can become a world champion.
Why does Froch believe this? That’s a good question. Froch believes that because Joshua was able to survive being hurt by Whyte, it means Joshua can become a world champion. Froch doesn’t say anything about Whyte having come into the fight with an injury to his left shoulder, which he reinjured in the process of hurting Joshua with a left hook in the 2nd round.
By Scott Gilfoid: In something has to make you question British heavyweight David Haye’s motives for making a comeback, he is already looking past his next opponent Mark De Mori (30-1-2, 26 KOs) towards a hoped for clash against British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in 2016. Haye faces De Mori next month on January 16th at the O2 Arena in London, UK.
Haye, 35, says he’d like to fight the unbeaten 6’6”, 245lb Joshua by the summer of 2016 if possible. This would mean that Haye would likely only have time for his one tune-up fight against the 33-year-old De Mori before he’d go straight into a clash against Joshua in the summer.
By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight Malik Scott does not think too much of British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 KOs), who he sees as a spoiled, insecure brat, who he sees as a black version of David Price.
Scott doesn’t say why he sees the 6’6” Joshua as another Price, but it’s possible that he might have seen Joshua struggle in sparring when the two fighters were in former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko’s training camp a couple of years ago.
Scott is not too happy with Joshua after the British fighter chose not to shake his hand after he congratulated him following his 7th round stoppage win over his nemesis Dillian Whyte earlier this month on December 12th at the O2 Arena in London, England.
