Andy Lee to fight in June in New York

lee67111By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO middleweight champion Andy Lee (34-3-1, 24 KOs) says he’ll be fighting in June against a still to be determined opponent in New York. The 31-year-old Lee lost his WBO 160lb title to Billy Joe Saunders last December in a 12 round majority decision loss at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Lee was knocked down twice in the 3rd round, but Saunders did zero for the remainder of the fight, and it was a winnable one for Lee if he had with some more aggression.

“The preliminary plans are that I will fight again in June in New York, with an opponent to be confirmed,” Lee told UTV.ie. “I want to win my title back. It hurts losing it. I worked hard to get it and I want to get it back just as badly.”

Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Ranking the contenders – Billy Joe Saunders

Image: Who can be the man to defeat Golovkin? Ranking the contenders - Billy Joe SaundersBy Al Classico: Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KO’s), The undefeated WBO champion threw a real spanner into the works when he defeated Andy Lee in late 2015 and derailed a potential, higher profile  Lee- Golovkin showdown this year. With the defeat of Lee and the acquisition of a ‘world champion’ belt, his name was immediately thrust into the conversation as a next up Golovkin opponent.

According to some reports, there was an offer tabled to Saunders for a fight against Golovkin in April, however the negotiations collapsed, with money allegedly being the biggest barrier to the deal being struck. Saunders has since opted to go in a different direction at this stage of his career but hopefully this fight can be made at some point in the not-too-distant future as it will be a really intriguing match-up. So if the fight does eventually get made, how would Saunders fare if he were to step up and step into the ring with Golovkin?

Golovkin loses chance for shot at WBO title

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Scott Gilfoid: You’ve got to feel a little bad for IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Not only has he lost out on a title shot against WBC 160lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez after the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said that Canelo can take a voluntary defense in the first quarter of next year, but Golovkin also lost out on an opportunity to fight a unification fight against WBO champion Andy Lee.

The Irish fighter lost his WBO title last weekend in a close and some would say controversial 12 round majority decision defeat to British fighter Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) in a fight that took place in England at the Manchester Arena. It looked to many casual observers that Lee had done enough to deserve a 12 round draw, but two of the judges gave Saunders the win.

Andy Lee wants rematch with Billy Joe Saunders

lee67111By Scott Gilfoid: Andy Lee (34-3-1, 24 KOs) showed a lot of heart in coming back from two knockdowns in the 3rd round to almost rally to get a victory over challenger Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) last Saturday night at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Lee lost his WBO middleweight title in the process of getting beaten by a 12 round majority decision. However, Lee feels he finished stronger than Saunders, and he’d very much like a rematch to avenge his loss and recapture his WBO strap.

Saunders spoke of possibly giving Lee a rematch in London if it makes good business sense. There are not a lot of good money options for Saunders unfortunately, given that he’s not interested in facing IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in a unification fight.

Saunders: I’m 18 months away from Golovkin fight

saunders11111By Scott Gilfoid: For boxing fans hoping to see Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) defend his new WBO middleweight title against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in his first defense of his title in February or March of 2016, you can forget about it.

Saunders, 26, says he won’t be looking to fight Golovkin for another year and a half or so. This is the same thing Chris Eubank Jr. about Golovkin too. When you hear a fighter talking about not wanting to fight someone for 18 months, I see that as code for meaning that they never want to fight that person.

Saunders: I want Canelo or Cotto

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: After winning the WBO middleweight title last night in Manchester, UK, Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) says that he wants to fight the best in the 160lb division starting with either WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Miguel Cotto. Saunders beats Andy Lee (34-3-1, 24 KOs) by a disputed 12 round majority decision at the Manchester Arena in England.

Thus far, Canelo and Cotto have not spoken up about whether they would be interested in fighting the 26-year-old Saunders. Canelo has a voluntary defense of his WBC title coming up on May 7th, so it’s possible that he might show some interest in taking the fight if it makes sense financially.

Jacobs not overly impressed with Saunders or Lee

jacobsBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA “regular” middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs was a guest analyst for Showtime Boxing tonight in working the Andy Lee (34-3-1, 24 KOs) vs. Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) fight in their contest in the UK. Jacobs came away from the experience disappointed in both fighters, as he thought neither of them distinguished themselves in any way.

Saunders, the winner of the fight by a 12 round majority decision, was more extinguished than distinguished in winning by the scores of 115-111, 114-112 and 113-113. The only judge that seemed to have his head on correctly in my view was Marcus McDonnell, who scored the fight 113-113. You can make an argument that was a fair score because Lee appeared to win 8 of the 12 rounds.
