What those things are is unknown, but Canelo is telling everyone that will listen that it was a great learning experience for him to get beaten by Mayweather last September. With Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya looking on, Canelo worked out for a little over an hour. He shadow-boxed, hit the mitts, did calisthenics, worked the speed bag, smacked the heavy bag, did stretching exercises, posed for photos, signed autographs and conducted copious amounts of interviews, some in groups and others one-on-one, as traditional Mexican music blared in the background.

Canelo Alvarez: New Mexican hope or hype job?

YouTube video
By Delroy Williams: Its just over 2 weeks till former junior middleweight titlist Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KOs) faces up against the tough durable Mexican Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KOs) in what could be the fight that could ultimately prove whether he is indeed the real deal or just someone that has been hyped up to be the next great Mexican warrior.

Mexico has a rich history off boxing greats such as the late Vicente Saldivar 37-3-0 (26 KOs), Ruben Olivares 88-13-3 (78 KOs), Erik Morales 51-7-0 (35 KOs), Juan Manuel Marquez 52-5-1 (38 KOs), and arguably the greatest of them all Julio Cesar Chavez 107-6-2 (89 KOs) just to name a few. Mexicans have been crying out for the next great one to be unleashed on the world stage and they had been hoping that Julio Cesar Chavez juniorĀ  would have been that man to take over the throne but although he may have the talent, skills and chin to be up there he certainly doesn’t have the hunger, desire or work ethic to get to where he’s father got to.

Three potential upsets this year

canelo22222By Bob Smith: Last year heralded two new champions added to the pantheon of the ESPN Pound for Pound List – Guillermo Rigondeaux and Gennady Golovkin, and also was the year of the first defeat of Canelo Alvarez in the most anticipated fight of the year, the fight between him and Floyd Mayweather. All three boxing champions have bright futures and unique strengths, but if they face the wrong opponent, may well fall from grace in the next year.

Guillermo Rigondeaux is arguably the best defensive fighter in boxing today, with the possible exception of Floyd Mayweather. His brilliant and masterful fight against Donaire last year made the 2012 Fighter of the Year look ordinary, and largely feckless. He followed this up with a win against the very tough and underrated Joseph Agbeko. He is a master at controlling distance and is an excellent counter-puncher.
