Lucian Bute vs. Eleider Alvarez, winner faces Adonis Stevenson

Image: Lucian Bute vs. Eleider Alvarez, winner faces Adonis Stevenson

By Allan Fox: Unbeaten Eleider Alvarez (20-0, 10 KOs) and former IBF 168lb champ Lucian Bute (32-1, 25 KOs) will fight each other on February 24 at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City in Canada. The winner of the Bute-Alvarez fight will be getting a shot at WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson on April 29.

That might not be a good thing if the soon to be 37-year-old Bute wins, because he might not be much competition for a puncher like Stevenson. Bute will have been out of the ring for 10 months by the time he faces the 32-year-old Alvarez on Feb.24. That’s not good news for Bute, because he’s not the young fighter that he was when he held the International Boxing Federation super middleweight title from 2007 to 2012.

Kovalev vs. Ward winner will face Stevenson says Bellew

1-kovalevwardarrivals_hoganphotos10

By Scott Gilfoid: WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew expects the winner of this Saturday’s fight between IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (30-0-1, 26 KOs) and Andre Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) will face WBC 175lb champion Adonis “Super Man” Stevenson (28-1, 23 KOs) in a unification match.

Bellew thinks that the 39-year-old Stevenson has the best chance of beating Ward, who he believes will defeat Kovalev on Saturday night. Stevenson destroyed Bellew in six one-sided rounds three years ago in 2013 in a 6th round knockout. Bellew believes that Stevenson is the most dangerous puncher in the 175lb division.

Can Golovkin beat the top 175lb fighters?

golovkin633

By Allan Fox: Unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) is on the verge of cleaning out the 160lb division once he beats Daniel Jacobs, Billy Joe Saunders and Saul Canelo Alvarez.

Golovkin may not need to defeat Saunders, because he’ll likely be eliminated in early 2017 once he fights the young 26-year-old Canelo Alvarez in a fight that will almost surely wind up on HBO pay-per-view in the United States.

Braehmer wants Kovalev or Stevenson after Cleverly

braehmer

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer is looking past 29-year-old Nathan Cleverly for their fight this Saturday night in Germany. After fighting for 17 years as a pro and still without one career defining fight on his entire resume, Braehmer is saying he would like to fight either WBC champion Adonis Stevenson or IBF/WBA/WBO 175lb champion Sergey Kovalev.

Braehmer says he’d like to fight one or both of those guys before he wraps up his long career. At 37, Braehmer says he’s beating guys 10 years younger than himself. This is true. Braehmer is beating younger guys. However, he’s not being tested at all due to the younger guys being largely mediocre fighters and not the quality young guys like Artur Beterbiev, Joe Smith Jr. or Andre Ward.

The young guys that Braehmer has been beating are fighters like Konni Konrad, Pawel Glazewski, Robin Krasniqi, Eduard Guknecht and Roberto Feliano Bolonti. Those aren’t good fighters in my opinion, and I don’t think any of them should be ranked in the top 100 in the light heavyweight division, let alone in the top 15.

Adonis Stevenson looks invincible, Kovalev should stay away

stevenson38

(Photo credit: Dave Nadkarni/Premier Boxing Champions) By Eric Baldwin: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (28-1, 23 KOs) made a clear statement last Friday night with his emphatic 4th round knockout win over #8 WBC Thomas Williams Jr. (20-2, 14 KOs) by showing that he arguably is the best fighter in the 175lb division and the guy to beat right now.

With the way that Stevenson looked last night, IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev and Andre Ward had better stay far away from him because the Canadian fighter looks to be the top dog in the 175lb division by far.

Adonis Stevenson vs. Thomas Williams Jr tonight

stevenson3

Photo credit: Dave Nadkarni/Premier Boxing Champions) By Patrick McHugh: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (27-1, 22 KOs) will be looking to make a successful defense of his WBC belt tonight against the 28-year-old American Thomas “Top Dog” Williams Jr (20-1, 14 KOs)at the Centre Videotron in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Both fighters have KO power in each fist. Stevenson does well when he’s given space and time to throw his big power shots from the outside. Stevenson isn’t quite as good when his opponents get in close and throw flurries at him. Stevenson needs room to get leverage on his punches and to use his hand speed. When Stevenson is on the inside, his hand speed and power is almost totally negated.

Adonis Stevenson looking to KO Williams Jr

stevenson

By Allan Fox: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (27-1, 22 KOs) says he’s going to be looking for a fast knockout on Fridday night against fringe contender Thomas Williams Jr. (20-1, 14 KOs) at the Centre Videotron in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

This is Stevenson’s last voluntary defense before he has to take on his #1 WBC mandatory challenger Eleider Alvarez. Compared to some of the challengers that Stevenson has faced, Williams Jr. is very dangerous. He can punch, he’s a southpaw and he’s young.

Adonis Stevenson vs. Thomas Williams Jr. this Friday

stevenson123

By Allan Fox: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson (27-1, 22 KOs) will be defending his title this Friday night on June 29 against #8 WBC Thomas Williams Jr. (20-1, 14 KOs) in what should be a very winnable fight for the 38-year-old Stevenson on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Spike TV from the Centre Videotron, in Quebec city, Canada.

This is a fight that Stevenson wants because he likes the match-up. Read: Stevenson believes he can get through this fight without too much trouble. Williams Jr. is still largely the same flawed fighter that was stopped by Gabriel Campillo two years ago in 2014.

Stevenson vs. Williams card loses Alvarez-Dawson

stevenson22

By Patrick McHugh: The July 29th fight between WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson vs. Thomas Williams Jr. took a bit hit earlier today with the news that the co-feature bout between unbeaten #1 WBC Eleider Alvarez and Chad Dawson won’t be taking place.

The 34-year-old former world champion Dawson suffered a shoulder injury during training camp and had to pull out of the fight with the unbeaten Alvarez. The promoter for the card, Yvon Michel, is looking for a replacement to step in and face Alvarez, who will remain in the co-feature spot.

It’s pretty important that that the 32-year-old Alvarez remains in the co-feature spot because he’s going to be facing the 38-year-old Stevenson soon or Williams Jr. if he beats Stevenson.

Joe Smith Jr’s trainer wants Adonis Stevenson fight

By Jeff Aranow: Jerry Capobianco, the trainer for light heavyweight Joe Smith Jr. (22-1, 18 KOs), would like to see his fighter cash in on the success he had last Saturday night in destroying the highly ranked #2 WBC Andrzej Fonfara (28-4, 16 KOs) in a 1st round knockout at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois.

Smith Jr., 26, came into the fight with Fonfara a huge underdog, but he shocked everyone by knocking the Polish fighter down twice in the 1st round to get a fast knockout victory.
