Adonis Stevenson

By Tom Cowan: This Saturday, WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson faces Canadian challenger Adonis Stevenson at the Bell Centre, Montreal. Dawson is coming off a stoppage loss to Andre Ward, while Stevenson is coming off a win against Darnell Boone which avenged the only loss of his career so far.

Dawson was meant to fight Jean Pascal in an attempt to avenge his 2011 defeat but Pascal opted instead for an all-Canadian fight with former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute but an injury to Bute meant that fight had to be put back to December. Stevenson was supposed to be fighting Bute’s conqueror Carl Froch but the Brit opted to take a unification fight against Mikkel Kessler, which meant he could avoid Stevenson, his mandatory challenger. Stevenson wasn’t willing to wait until October or November to face Froch so he’s moved up a division to face Bad Chad.

By Scott Gilfoid: Tony Bellew is chomping at the bit to get a shot against Adonis Stevenson (20-1, 17 KO’s) and he’s really pulling for the 35-year-old fighter to beat WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada.

Bellew feels he’d do a lot better against Stevenson than he would against the defensive artist Dawson, and I think I’d have to agree with him. Stevenson is a lot more vulnerable to Bellew than Dawson would be.

Bellew said to Sky Ringside “If I was a betting man, without a doubt it’s Dawson. But if I could pick [who wins], I’d take Stevenson. Me and him would be just a war! I’d literally go to his backyard to fight him.”

By Peter Wells (twitter – @boxingbrains): With just a few days to go until Chad Dawson defends his WBC Light Heavyweight title, I’ll be taking a look at his challenger, the 35 year old Canadian Adonis Stevenson. With just 21 fights to his name Stevenson is moving up from Super Middleweight having failed to secure a fight with one of the top guns at 168lbs. In modern day boxing Stevenson has failed to attract much attention outside of the fight game.

Having fought the majority of his fights in Canada he has some what gone under the radar, but Saturday night he has the chance to make a name for himself. Win, draw or lose, a good performance from Adonis against the world class Dawson would do wonders for his career. Having been a pro for just 7 years, Adonis still has time on his side even at the age of 35, a late bloomer he is, but compare him to fellow Light Heavyweight Bernard Hopkins and he’s a young pup.

By Eric Thomas: WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KO’s) feels that he’s going to be rolling back the years this Saturday night in his fight against Adonis Stevenson (20-1, 17 KO’s) at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada.

Dawson thinks he can fight at the level that he did back in 2007 when he dominated a young Tomasz Adamek in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision. Dawson hasn’t looked like the same fighter that year, as he doesn’t throw as many punches and he’s a lot more conservative with his fighting style.

By Eric Thomas: This Saturday night will be the showdown between WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KO’s) and the knockout artist Adonis Stevenson (20-1, 17 KO’s) on June 8th at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada.

Unless this fight ends in a draw, there’s going to be questions answered about the future of one of these guys starting with Dawson. He’s not looked good in quite some time and it could be that he reached his peak early and started going downhill at an early age.

By Allan Fox: WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KO’s) is going to have to change up his game next month in his title defense against Adonis Stevenson (30-1, 17 KO’s) on June 8th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Dawson, 30, will be fighting Adonis in his adopted country and the judges probably aren’t going to give Dawson a lot of rounds if he fights in his usual economical style that he’s been using for quite some time.

Since 2010, Dawson has been doing just enough to win his fights. He’s not consistent and seems to take a lot of valuable rounds off for some reason. It doesn’t look like it’s a stamina thing, but rather more of a mental thing where he seems to lose focus/interest in the fight for periods. Dawson can’t afford to do that against Adonis because he’ll get knocked out if he disengages mentally from the fight.

By Allan Fox: Next month super middleweight contender Adonis Stevenson (20-1, 17 KO’s) will be moving up in weight to face WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KO’s) on June 8th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. It’s only 7 pounds from 168 to 175, so it shouldn’t be that big of a move for the 5’11”, 35-year-old Stevenson.

It is a big move as far as quality opposition goes because Stevenson has been pretty well protected in his 7 years as a pro. In his last fight, he chose to avenge an earlier loss to journeyman Darnell Boone (19-21-3, 8 KO’s).
